Chapter 7 - CHAPTER 8: Everything Falls Apart

The word weapon echoed in my head.

Again.

And again.

Until it stopped sounding like a word…

And started sounding like me.

I took a step back.

Then another.

My legs felt unsteady, like the ground beneath me had disappeared.

"No, no…" I repeated . "No, that's not true."

But my voice didn't sound convincing.

Not even to me.

Liam moved toward me instantly.

"Zara, don't listen to him."

I flinched.

"Don't listen?" I snapped, my voice breaking.

"He just showed a video of my life before I even met you!"

Silence.

Heavy.

Crushing.

The man sighed softly, almost bored.

"See?" he said. "This is why she was perfect."

My hands curled into fists.

"Stop talking about me like I'm not here!" I barked.

He smiled faintly.

"But you weren't supposed to know you were here."

That made my stomach drop.

Liam stepped forward again, voice colder now.

"You've said enough."

The man tilted his head.

"Have I?"

Then he looked at me.

And everything inside me tightened again.

"Do you want the rest?" he asked softly.

My throat went dry.

Liam answered before I could find my voice.

"No."

But I spoke at the same time.

"Yes."

Liam turned sharply toward me.

"Zara,

"I need to know," I whispered.

"Everything."

Silence.

The man smiled.

"Good girl."

That word made something in me snap.

"I am not your anything, do not use any adjective on me." I answered while rolling my eyes.

He chuckled.

"You still think you have a choice in how this story defines you?"

My chest tightened painfully.

He walked toward the screens again.

And tapped something.

A new file opened.

PROJECT FILE: ORIGIN SUBJECT- ZARA WILLIAMS

My name.

Again.

But deeper.

Older.

Then images appeared.

Not from the event.

From before.

Much before.

My childhood school records.

My early jobs.

Interviews.

Every rejection.

Every acceptance.

Every move I made.

I felt sick.

"How… how do you have all this?" I asked confused.

The man's voice was calm.

"We don't watch you, Zara."

A pause.

"We build around you."

My breath caught.

Liam stepped closer to me.

This time not just protective.

But unsettled.

"You're saying she was monitored her entire life?" he asked.

The man nodded.

"Selected patterns. Emotional responses. Career trajectory."

My head spun.

"No, that's impossible…"

"Nothing is impossible," he said softly. "When you're being designed for a role."

My voice cracked.

"A role in what?"

The man looked at Liam again.

Then back at me.

And smiled.

"In his downfall or his rise."

The room went silent.

Liam's jaw tightened.

"Enough."

But his voice wasn't as steady anymore.

The man ignored him.

Because now,

He was speaking to me alone.

"You weren't meant to fall in love," he said.

My breath stopped.

"You were meant to trigger attachment."

My heart pounded painfully.

"And him?" he nodded toward Liam. "He was meant to respond."

I turned slowly toward Liam.

Something in my chest broke.

"Is that true?" I whispered.

Liam didn't answer immediately.

And that silence,

That hesitation,

It was worse than any lie.

"Zara," he finally said.

But I stepped back.

"No."

My voice shook.

"No, don't."

My chest felt like it was collapsing.

"You knew parts of this," I whispered. "Didn't you?"

His eyes tightened.

"That's not"

"Answer me."

Silence.

That was enough.

I nodded slowly.

Tears burned in my eyes, but I refused to let them fall before him.

"So I wasn't just a victim"

My voice broke.

"It was a strategy."

Liam stepped forward.

"Zara, listen to me, this changed. I didn't know everything."

I laughed bitterly.

A broken sound.

"You still used me."

Silence again.

And that silence confirmed everything.

The man clapped slowly.

"Beautiful," he said. "This is exactly why it worked."

My head snapped toward him.

"You planned this."

He shrugged.

"We all play our parts."

Suddenly,

The monitors flickered.

Warning signals returned.

SYSTEM ALERT: PHASE TWO INITIATED

I shivered vigorously.

"What is that?"

The man smiled.

"Oh… that?"

He glanced at Liam.

"That's where things get interesting."

Liam's expression changed instantly.

"No."

Just that.

One word.

Heavy with fear.

My stomach dropped.

"What is Phase Two?"

The man stepped back toward the door.

"Let's just say, mmm"

He paused.

"Well, now that you're aware of the game"

His smile widened.

"you're officially part of it."

My breath stopped.I staggered.

Officially part of what?

"Good luck, Zara Williams."

Right there,

He walked out.

Calm.

Like nothing had happened.

Like he hadn't just shattered my entire reality.

The doors closed.

Silence remained.

Heavy.

Broken.

I turned slowly toward Liam. My voice barely came out.

"What did he mean by Phase Two?"

Liam didn't answer immediately.

He looked at the screens. At the flashing system alert.

At the words still glowing:

ACTIVE SUBJECTS CONFIRMED.

Finally, he spoke.

Low.

Controlled.

But shaken.

"It means, erm" he said quietly.

"This was only the test."

My world collapsed again.

"And now," he added, meeting my eyes and staring deep into them made my knees weak. I had to break eye contact.

"They're going to finish what they started."

The lights flickered once more. And for the first time,

I wasn't sure if I was running from enemies, or running to them

or from the truth about myself.
