Her yams were rotting. Her back ached. The villagers called her "the widow of the soil" â though she never married.
On this Eke morning, she sat under a dead iroko tree. No one bought from her. No one looked at her.
Then she heard a guitar.
The stranger was tall, quiet. His hands were rough â farmer's hands â but the music was tender. His name was Ifeanyi.
That night, I came to Nkiruka in a dream. I sat on a stool of fire.
"You have forgotten Pillar #5," I said. "Entertainment. Joy is not a reward. It is a weapon. The Static cannot enter a laughing heart."
She woke up. Ifeanyi was outside her hut.
"Who are you?" she asked.
He rolled up his sleeve. A barcode blinked on his wrist. The number was the day her father died.
"I was sent to destroy your potential," he whispered. "But then I saw you under the tree."
Behind him, a shadow lunged.
