Chapter 8 - Chapter 8

The rain lashed against the reinforced glass of a private docking bay in the lower industrial sector, far from the polished silver of the Spire. Naomi stood with her back to the shadows, her long coat trailing like a shroud.

A man stepped out of the gloom, shivering. He was a low-level clerk within the Hero Association's Intelligence Bureau—a "Null" who sold secrets to keep his family fed. He didn't look at Naomi; no one who valued their sanity looked the Shadow Sovereign in the eye.

"They're moving faster than we thought, Ma'am," the informant whispered, his voice trembling. "Sandra personally oversaw the forensic reconstruction of the alleyway where Vane... disappeared. They found traces of a reality-warp signature they've never seen. They're calling it the 'Zero Event.' They've mapped the energy trajectory back to the residential districts. They know the being responsible is young. They're starting door-to-door Spark-testing in every orphanage and school within a ten-mile radius."

Naomi's molecular vibration flared for a split second, causing the metal railing beneath her hand to groan and warp. The informant flinched, nearly falling backward.

"They won't find her," Naomi said, her voice a low, terrifying simmer.

"Ma'am, the Four Pillars are obsessed," the man stammered. "If they find a girl with that kind of power who isn't registered... they'll execute a Tier-One extraction. They'll take her to the Vault."

"Let them try," Naomi hissed. "Get out. Your payment is in the usual account. Speak of this again, and I will ensure your atoms are scattered across the sector."

As the man scrambled away, Naomi remained in the rain. A dark, suffocating heat rose in her chest—not of anger, but of obsession. The thought of the Hero Association laying a finger on Sasha, of Sandra's cold, "righteous" hands touching her disciple, made Naomi's blood boil. Sasha was her masterpiece. Her heart. Her end-of-the-world. She wouldn't just hide her; she would bury her in the one place the heroes would never think to look.

The Hidden Blade

Back at the Spire, Naomi paced the length of her study. Javar stood by the desk, her grey eyes tracking Naomi's restless movement.

"The Association is closing in," Naomi said, stopping abruptly. "They are hunting for a monster in the gutters. They expect a villain. They expect someone hiding in the dark."

"What are your orders, Sovereign?" Javar asked. "Shall we move her to the mountain fortress?"

"No," Naomi said, a slow, predatory grin spreading across her face. "We are going to put her in the light. If you want to hide a star, you put it in the sun. Javar, I want a complete digital and physical rewrite. I want a pedigree, a bloodline, and a history. Sasha is no longer an orphan from Saint Jude's."

Naomi turned to a holographic display of the Aurelius Academy of Youth Heroes—the most prestigious institution in the world, governed by the Four Pillars themselves.

"She is going to take the Entrance Trials for Aurelius," Naomi declared.

Javar, for the first time in years, looked stunned. "Ma'am? You're sending the Zero Point into the lion's den? If Sandra senses her—"

"Sandra is arrogant," Naomi interrupted. "She expects power to be loud. Sasha is quiet. We will forge a 'Spark-Profile' for her—something modest. We'll call it 'Low-Level Kinetic Dampening.' Something just strong enough to get her through the gates but weak enough to be ignored. While she is there, she will be my eyes. She will learn their weaknesses. And the heroes will be the ones protecting my greatest weapon for me."

Naomi's eyes glazed over with a frightening, obsessive light. She walked over to a monitor showing Sasha in the library, peacefully reading a book with Anna standing vigil nearby.

"She is mine, Javar," Naomi whispered, her fingers tracing Sasha's face on the screen. "The Association wants to 'contain' her? I will make them worship her before I have her tear their academy down from the inside. They think they are the hunters. They don't realize I've already walked into their house and set the fire."

The New Name

Naomi entered the library, her expression instantly softening into the mask of the loving mentor. Sasha looked up, her naive, trusting smile blooming the moment she saw Naomi.

"Sasha, my sweet girl," Naomi said, sitting beside her and taking her hand. "The people who want to hurt you—the ones in the gold suits—they are looking for you. But I have a plan to keep you safe forever."

Sasha's grip tightened on Naomi's hand. "Will they find me here?"

"Never," Naomi promised, leaning in to kiss the girl's temple. "Because you aren't Sasha anymore. From tomorrow, you are Sasha Valerius, the daughter of a fallen Hero family I once knew. You are going to go to their favorite school. You are going to pretend to be one of them. And while they think they are teaching you, you will be learning how to help me end the wars for good."

Sasha looked uncertain, her eyes wide. "I have to pretend to be a hero?"

"Just a little bit," Naomi smiled, her thumb stroking Sasha's palm. "Think of it as a game. A secret we share. Can you do that for me, my little god?"

Sasha nodded, her devotion overriding her fear. "Anything for you, Naomi."

Naomi pulled the girl into a tight embrace, her eyes meeting Anna's over Sasha's shoulder. The look in Naomi's eyes was clear: She is mine. And I will burn the world before I let her go.
