Chapter 2 - Ubisoft

Denji: "You won't have to worry about me anymore, old man. I finally hit my goal for cash..... just one question… you know any decent lawyers?"

"Yeah, I know a pretty good one. She's kept me out of that hellhole Arkham more than a few times. She also owes me a favor, so she won't charge you too much."

Denji: "Thank you, old man… but why do you go so far for me? I've been meaning to ask for a while, but blowing a favor on me seems excessive."

This old man has been there for me at my lowest. Back when Joker broke out of Arkham and took... all of which caused me to awaken my meta‑ability, I had to run from the orphanage before I got exposed.

As due to all of fiction whenever a powered individual stay's around the weak all parties suffer, not to mention... joker

He trained me in combat, let me crash on his couch, gave me information—everything—for nothing. For fuck's sake, I don't even know his real name.

"Why you ask? It's simple. I don't have kids, no partner, no duty. I've got nothing… but you? You've got drive, kid. Every training session, the way you fight for your life in those matches… hell, you used to deliver goods to Arkham for cash."

"You're someone who doesn't deserve to die forgotten in this hellhole. Plus, I've only got a year left to live. So on the off chance there is a god, I want to raise my chances of a peaceful rest however I can. Now bugger off and go meet her. Her name's Janice. Tell her old Mike's debts are square after this."

Denji: "Thanks, Old Mike. I mean it—you're the best thing that's happened to me. Don't die too soon, okay?"

I grab all the cash I had stashed at Old Mike's place and head toward Janice's office.

Shady Building in Gotham #97

"Hello? Is Janice in?"

I called out until an older woman—maybe in her 50s—walked out and approached me.

Janice: "Yes, this is Janice. Who are you?"

I explained what Old Mike told me.

Janice: "Understood. Now, what did you want from me?"

I began explaining my goal.

Flashback

I was six years old.

"Mmmhhhh… oclany? occlamy? Occlumency Training Method?"

For some reason, I kept dreaming about something called the Occlumency Training Method. I didn't know what it was, but it sounded important.

I sat down and started meditating like the dream described. It mentioned building walls and storage, but I didn't know what that meant. So I imagined everything I knew being written into books—like a mental library.

As I filled the shelves, I noticed books that held memories I didn't recognize and more then I could imagine… whatever.

I kept going until all my memories were stored. Then I went to the shelf labeled Past, touched a book, and—

It's hard to explain.

It wasn't a painful rush or some revelation that my life was fake. It was like remembering where you left something after searching for hours.

I remembered a boring life. A void where I saw… something. Then Rick. Then the gifts—my wishes.

I'm guessing due to my age my body couldn't hold onto my past memories, but my soul could, so I'm guessing when I practiced Occlumency my soul final could store the memories in my body, anyways

And I realized all the games and anime I used to watch didn't exist here. Maybe they never would. This wasn't my old universe.

Diving back into Occlumency, I created another bookshelf and stored all my entertainment knowledge there. I labeled it Project Ubisoft.

Flashback Ends

Denji: "I'd like your help starting the legal procedures for patenting my intellectual property and forming a company."

Janice looked shocked, but once I handed her half my funds ($3,000) and all the documents I'd prepared, she was more than happy to take the job. Easy work for her—professional and legal.

Janice: "What's the company's name?"

Denji: "Ubisoft."

I left her office after giving her my number, then spent another $2,500 on a cheap apartment and computer parts. Time to turn my IPs into actual media—starting with the easiest money-maker ever: Flappy Bird.

I worked all night until 2 a.m. Checking the date—April 2nd, 2009—I whispered:

"Happy birthday to the luckiest man in the world… Denji."

All while the ghosts of the past slowly clawed their way back to the present.
