Chapter 11 - Chapter 11: Pieces of the Truth

Morning sunlight filtered through the tall windows of Kingsley Group headquarters, but Adrian Kingsley barely noticed it.

He sat at his desk, staring at the city skyline while waiting for Daniel Carter to arrive. The image from yesterday kept returning to his mind.

Elena standing outside the ice cream shop.

The small boy laughing beside her.

Blue eyes.

Adrian rubbed his temple, irritated by the strange feeling growing in his chest.

A knock sounded.

"Come in."

Daniel stepped inside, carrying a slim file.

"You work fast," Adrian said.

Daniel placed the folder on the desk.

"I started digging last night."

Adrian immediately opened it.

"What did you find?"

Daniel sat down across from him.

"Elena Laurent spent the last three years overseas."

Adrian scanned the documents.

"Where?"

"Mostly in Europe," Daniel replied. "Paris, Zurich, and London."

Adrian flipped through the pages.

"Building Laurent Group."

"Exactly."

Adrian paused.

"Any record of marriage?"

Daniel shook his head.

"No marriage records."

Adrian exhaled slowly.

"What about the child?"

Daniel leaned back slightly.

"That's where things get interesting."

Adrian looked up.

"There is a birth record," Daniel continued.

"A boy named Ethan Laurent."

Adrian's attention sharpened.

"How old?"

Daniel glanced at the file.

"Three years old."

Adrian's hand froze on the page.

Three years.

The exact amount of time since Elena had left his life.

His chest tightened slightly.

"Where was he born?" Adrian asked.

"France."

Adrian stared at the document silently.

A quiet calculation formed in his mind.

Three years ago…

Elena had walked out of his house in the rain.

Broken.

Humiliated.

And now there was a child.

A three-year-old child.

Daniel watched him carefully.

"You're thinking the same thing I am."

Adrian closed the file.

"It's impossible."

"Is it?"

Adrian stood and walked toward the window.

"She never said anything."

Daniel shrugged.

"Would you have listened back then?"

Adrian didn't answer.

Because the truth was painfully obvious.

Three years ago, he hadn't listened to anything Elena said.

Daniel spoke again.

"I can run a DNA test if you want."

Adrian turned sharply.

"No."

Daniel frowned.

"No?"

"I don't even know if the boy is connected to me."

Daniel raised an eyebrow.

"You seemed pretty interested yesterday."

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"I'm curious. That's all."

But deep down, he wasn't sure that was the truth anymore.

---

Across town, Sophia Bennett sat inside a quiet café, nervously stirring her coffee.

Her phone buzzed.

A message from her assistant.

Adrian requested records from three years ago.

Sophia's stomach dropped.

She quickly typed a reply.

Which records?

The response came seconds later.

The hotel meeting and the photos.

Sophia froze.

Her hand tightened around the phone.

Three years ago, she had carefully arranged everything.

The meeting invitation.

The anonymous photographer.

The "evidence" that destroyed Elena's marriage.

And Adrian had believed every bit of it.

But now he was asking questions.

Sophia forced herself to breathe slowly.

She couldn't panic.

Not yet.

If Adrian discovered the truth about that night…

Everything she had worked for would collapse.

Sophia picked up her phone and dialed a number.

The call connected.

"I need you to remove something from the records," she said quietly.

---

Meanwhile, Elena sat inside her office reviewing financial projections.

Lucas entered without knocking.

"You look busy."

"I am," Elena replied.

Lucas dropped into the chair across from her.

"Then I'll keep this short."

She looked up.

"What happened?"

Lucas folded his arms.

"Adrian started investigating."

Elena's expression didn't change.

"I expected that."

Lucas leaned forward slightly.

"But he found Ethan's birth record."

That made her pause.

Her fingers tightened slightly on the pen she was holding.

"So he knows."

"He knows there's a child," Lucas corrected.

"But he doesn't know the truth yet."

Elena leaned back slowly.

"Yet."

Lucas watched her carefully.

"You're calm."

"I've been preparing for this moment."

Lucas frowned.

"But are you ready if he finds out?"

Elena looked toward the window.

The city skyline stretched endlessly in the distance.

"He will eventually," she said quietly.

Lucas nodded.

"And when he does?"

Elena thought about Ethan.

His laughter.

His small hand holding hers outside the ice cream shop.

Her voice softened slightly.

"Then Adrian will have to face the consequences of the choices he made."

Lucas sighed.

"You're still angry."

Elena shook her head slowly.

"No."

She stood and walked toward the window.

"I'm careful."

Lucas followed her gaze toward the city streets below.

"Because once the truth comes out…"

He didn't finish the sentence.

He didn't need to.

Elena already knew.

Adrian Kingsley was getting closer to the truth.

And the moment he discovered the real story behind Ethan Laurent…

Nothing in their carefully balanced world would remain the same.
