He saw it from the window.
He hadn't meant to still be standing in the doorway. He'd told Seren to go home, watched him walk to the elevator, and should have turned back to his desk thirty seconds ago. Instead he'd stayed, watching the lobby camera feed on his secondary screen out of habit — the same habit Damien had called him on twice now and that Caelan had no intention of stopping.
He saw Seren step out of the building.
He saw Riven.
His hand was on his phone before he'd decided to move.
"Don't," Damien said.
Caelan turned.
Damien was in the doorway, the one Caelan had been occupying thirty seconds ago. He had a folder in his hand and the expression he wore when he was about to say something Caelan wasn't going to want to hear.
"Don't what," Caelan said.
