The hospital called at two in the morning.
Not with news. With the quiet instruction that preceded news — you should come now, bring whoever needs to be here — the language that meant the windows had narrowed to the point where time was no longer something to be managed around.
Seren was already awake.
He had been awake since midnight, in the specific way of someone whose body understood something their mind was still processing. He had been lying in the dark with Caelan's arm around him and the twins moving occasionally and the city outside doing its two-in-the-morning version of itself, and he had known without being told.
He answered the call.
Said he was coming.
Put the phone down.
"I know," Caelan said.
He was already sitting up.
They called Juno from the car.
Juno answered on the first ring, which meant he had also been awake.
"I'll call Adrian," Juno said. "Go. We'll be there."
