Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: The Night Before the Fall

The village was quiet.

Too quiet.

Even the wind seemed softer tonight, as if something unseen was holding its breath.

Ren stood outside the dojo, staring at the wooden doors.

They were closed.

Unusual.

"…she's still inside," he murmured.

He could feel it.

Not with his eyes.

Not with his ears.

But with something deeper.

That faint… presence.

Kuina.

It was there.

Steady.

But—

Disturbed.

Ren frowned slightly.

"…something's off."

Without thinking, he pushed the door open.

A Girl Alone

The dojo was dark.

Only a faint lantern flickered in the corner.

And in the center—

Kuina.

Standing still.

Her wooden sword gripped tightly in her hands.

"…you're late," she said without turning.

Ren blinked.

"…you knew I was here?"

"…I felt it."

He paused.

"…felt what?"

Kuina turned slightly.

"…you."

Silence.

Ren's expression shifted.

"…so you can sense it now too…"

"…just a little."

She looked back at the floor.

"…it's annoying."

Ren chuckled softly.

"…yeah… I get that."

Something She Doesn't Say

He stepped closer.

"…you've been here all day?"

"Hm."

"…training?"

"…thinking."

That wasn't like her.

Ren stopped a few steps away.

"…about what?"

Kuina didn't answer.

Her grip on the sword tightened.

"…Ren."

"…yeah?"

"…if I lose someday…"

His eyes narrowed slightly.

"…you won't."

"…answer the question."

Silence.

"…then I'll win," he said.

Kuina froze.

"…what?"

Ren stepped closer.

"…if you lose, I'll win."

She turned fully toward him now.

"…that doesn't make sense."

"It does to me."

Their eyes met.

"…I'll carry it."

Kuina's breath caught slightly.

"…why would you do that?"

Ren smiled faintly.

"…because I don't like losing either."

A Fragile Truth

Kuina looked at him—

Really looked at him.

Not as a training partner.

Not as a rival.

But as someone who stood beside her.

"…you're strange," she whispered.

Ren shrugged.

"…you've said that before."

"…but…"

She hesitated.

"…I don't hate it."

Silence.

The air between them shifted.

Softer.

Warmer.

For a brief moment—

The weight she carried alone…

Didn't feel as heavy.

A Step Too Close

Ren stepped forward again.

"…you won't lose."

Kuina's grip tightened.

"…you don't know that."

"…I do."

"…how?"

Ren didn't answer.

Because he couldn't.

Not without revealing too much.

Instead—

"…because I won't let you."

Kuina's eyes widened slightly.

"…you can't decide that."

"…watch me."

Their distance—

Gone.

Just a step apart now.

Close enough to feel each other's breath.

Close enough that—

That presence—

Flickered again.

Seeing Her

Ren's vision shifted.

Stronger this time.

Clearer.

Kuina stood before him—

But also—

Something else.

A faint, glowing outline.

Steady.

Sharp.

Unyielding.

But—

There were cracks.

Small.

Almost invisible.

But there.

Ren's eyes widened.

What is this…?

It wasn't physical.

It wasn't visible normally.

But—

It felt real.

Like something fragile beneath her strength.

"…Ren?"

Her voice pulled him back.

The vision shattered.

He staggered slightly.

"…I'm fine…"

Kuina frowned.

"…you don't look fine."

"…just… pushed too far."

The Price Again

Pain hit him.

Sharp.

Deep.

His breathing faltered.

"…ngh…"

He dropped to one knee.

Kuina immediately moved forward.

"…idiot."

She grabbed his arm, steadying him.

"…you're overusing it."

Ren laughed weakly.

"…yeah… probably…"

Her grip tightened slightly.

"…then stop."

"…can't."

"…why?"

Ren looked up at her.

"…because if I don't understand it…"

His voice lowered.

"…I won't be able to protect anything."

Silence.

Kuina didn't let go.

A Promise Without Words

For a moment—

Neither of them moved.

Her hand still holding his arm.

His gaze still meeting hers.

Then—

"…don't die," she said quietly.

Ren blinked.

"…that's random."

"…it's not."

Her eyes were steady.

"…if you're going to get stronger…"

She tightened her grip slightly.

"…then don't disappear halfway."

Ren smiled softly.

"…same to you."

Kuina scoffed lightly.

"…I won't."

The Door Opens Again

"OI!"

The door slammed open.

Both of them turned.

Zoro stood there—

Breathing heavily.

"…I knew you'd be here!"

He paused.

Looking between them.

"…what are you two doing?"

Ren smirked.

"…resting."

"…that doesn't look like resting."

Kuina stepped back slightly.

"…none of your business."

Zoro frowned.

"…whatever."

But—

His eyes lingered on Ren.

"…that thing again…"

Ren blinked.

"…what?"

"…just now."

Zoro narrowed his eyes.

"…it felt stronger."

Kuina nodded slightly.

"…it was."

Zoro crossed his arms.

"…you're hiding something."

Ren sighed.

"…I'm figuring it out myself."

Zoro stared for a moment.

Then—

"…fine."

He turned away.

"…but next time—don't space out in a fight."

Ren chuckled.

"…noted."

Far Away, The Tide Moves

Far across the sea—

A small boat drifted under a moonlit sky.

A young girl sat alone, hugging her knees.

Orange hair swayed gently in the wind.

Her eyes stared at a map.

"…I'll figure it out…"

Her voice was quiet.

But determined.

"…no matter what…"

For a brief moment—

She paused.

A strange chill passed through her.

"…huh…?"

She looked around.

Nothing.

Just the sea.

"…weird…"

Then—

She returned to her map.

Unaware—

That somewhere far away—

A thread had begun to connect.

Something Inevitable

Back in the dojo—

The three stood together.

Tired.

Bruised.

But still standing.

"…tomorrow," Zoro said suddenly.

"…we fight again."

Kuina smirked.

"…you'll lose again."

"…we'll see."

Ren laughed softly.

"…I'll try not to collapse this time."

Zoro grinned.

"…you better not."

Kuina glanced at Ren.

"…and control that power."

"…working on it."

The Night Before Change

That night—

Ren couldn't sleep.

Not because of pain.

Not because of fear.

But because of something else.

A feeling.

Unsettling.

Like the world itself was shifting slightly.

He stared at the ceiling.

"…something's coming…"

He didn't know what.

Didn't know when.

But—

It was close.

Very close.

And for some reason—

His chest felt heavy.

A Quiet Warning

Outside—

The wind picked up slightly.

The dojo stood silent.

And somewhere in the darkness—

Something unseen moved.

Not yet revealed.

Not yet understood.

But inevitable.
