Chapter 4 - The Silence Between Them

After dinner, Mom and Papa went to their room.

The house slowly became quieter.

Only the soft sound of the ceiling fan and distant traffic remained.

I was still sitting on the sofa, lost in thought.

Everything Papa had said during dinner kept replaying inside my head.

The stress.

The overthinking.

The strange feeling inside me that I could never explain properly.

Shourya suddenly dropped beside me casually.

"You're thinking too much again."

I looked at him silently.

"How do you even know that?"

He smirked lightly.

"Because your face becomes serious whenever your brain starts fighting itself."

I rolled my eyes.

"That makes no sense."

"It does to me."

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

The silence between us felt strangely comfortable.

Dangerously comfortable.

Shourya stretched lazily before standing up.

"Come."

"Where?"

"Terrace."

"It's late."

"And?"

He looked back at me with that same calm confidence.

"You need fresh air."

A few minutes later, we were standing on the terrace under the cold night breeze.

The city lights flickered far away.

Everything felt peaceful.

Too peaceful.

Aakash leaned against the railing beside me.

"You know," he said quietly, "you don't always have to carry everything alone."

I looked down.

"I'm used to it."

"That doesn't mean it's healthy."

His voice was softer now.

More careful.

I could feel him watching me, but when I turned toward him, he looked away toward the sky.

"You scare people sometimes," he said suddenly.

"What?"

"You act strong even when you're breaking inside."

My chest tightened slightly.

Nobody had ever described me so accurately before.

The wind moved softly through his hair.

And for the first time…

I noticed how close we were standing.

Not enough to touch.

But close enough to feel each other's presence.

Neither of us moved away.

Shourya looked at me again.

This time more seriously.

"If something hurts you… tell me first."

The way he said it—

calm,

protective,

honest—

made my heartbeat feel uneven.

I laughed nervously.

"You talk like some movie hero."

"And you overreact like a drama protagonist."

I pushed his shoulder lightly.

He caught my wrist instinctively.

Both of us froze.

The air suddenly felt heavier.

Warmer.

His fingers slowly loosened, but neither of us immediately pulled away.

For a few seconds…

the world around us disappeared into silence.

Suddenly rain starts

Takash said by big bro i am feeling sleepy

In mommy and papa's room

The house slowly felt silence

Only the dim yellow lights and the distant sound of rain outside remained awake with us.

Megha was sitting near the edge of the bed, still lost in thoughts.

Marcus stood near the window for a few seconds, watching her silently.

Megha looked up at him.

"I'm just tired."

"That's not the real reason."

His voice was calm—

gentle enough to comfort,

yet deep enough to make her heartbeat stumble slightly.

She tried looking away, but Marcus slowly walked closer.

"There's something you're hiding."

The rain outside became heavier.

The room felt warmer somehow.

Marcus sat beside her slowly, careful not to invade her space.

But even that small distance between them already felt dangerous.

Megha could feel his presence too clearly.

His breathing.

The warmth of his shoulder near hers.

The way his eyes stayed fixed on her face as if trying to understand every unspoken thought.

"You don't always have to act strong," he whispered.

That sentence broke something inside her.

Her eyes softened instantly.

Marcus gently brushed a loose strand of hair behind her ear.

Such a simple touch—

yet it sent a quiet shiver through her entire body.

Neither of them moved away.

The silence between them became heavier.

More intimate.

Megha lowered her gaze nervously.

"You look at me like you already know everything."

Marcus smiled faintly.

"Maybe I just know you better than you think."

Her heartbeat turned uneven again.

The rain,

the silence,

the closeness—

everything around them felt unreal.

Marcus slowly held her hand.

Not forcefully.

Not impatiently.

Just enough to tell her he was there.

Always there.

Megha finally looked into his eyes properly.

And for a moment…

nothing else existed.

No stress.

No overthinking.

No noise from the outside world.

Only the warmth growing quietly between two people who were slowly becoming each other's safest place.

Marcus leaned closer, resting his forehead lightly against hers.

A slow breath escaped her lips.

"You make me feel calm," she admitted quietly.

His thumb brushed softly across her fingers.

"Then stay like this for a little longer."

Outside, the rain continued falling softly against the windows—

while inside the room,

two hearts slowly learned the language of love without needing words.
