Chapter 35 - CHAPTER 35:When Patterns Begin to Crack

The sea behind them was no longer perfectly coordinated.

Kevin noticed it first.

Not visually.

Mathematically.

The timing between cannon volleys shifted by a fraction.

The spacing between pursuit corrections was no longer identical.

"…Deviation detected."

Carina looked back.

"…Is that good or bad?"

Kevin answered calmly.

"…It is change."

And change could be used.

The enemy formation was still strong.

Three ships.

Still aligned.

Still pressuring.

But now—

Not perfectly synchronized.

The central ship adjusted its course slightly too early.

One escort ship corrected too late.

A gap formed for less than a second.

Kevin saw it immediately.

"…Window."

Carina blinked.

"…Window for what?"

Kevin didn't answer.

He moved.

He adjusted the helm sharply—not away from pressure, but into the timing gap between their coordination.

The ship surged diagonally through shifting wave alignment.

Carina grabbed the railing.

"…We're doing that again?!"

Kevin replied.

"…Exploiting failure point."

The ship slipped through the unstable spacing between cannon arcs.

Not by speed.

By timing.

BOOM—!

Explosions hit behind them, misaligned again.

Carina stared.

"…They missed… again."

Kevin nodded slightly.

"…Pattern instability increasing."

Behind them, the enemy captain narrowed his eyes.

"…He is reading the delay."

The formation corrected quickly—but not perfectly.

Pressure continued, but cracks were forming.

Carina leaned forward slightly.

"…So we're actually breaking them?"

Kevin answered.

"…Their structure, not their strength."

Another volley came.

But this time—

The spacing was slightly off again.

And Kevin noticed something else.

"…Command delay."

Carina frowned.

"…What does that mean?"

Kevin replied.

"…Orders are no longer instantaneous."

That meant communication lag.

Or uncertainty.

Or both.

Either way—

It meant opportunity.

Kevin adjusted sail tension higher for the first time since the chase began.

The ship responded immediately.

Faster acceleration.

Stronger wave riding.

Carina widened her eyes.

"…We're speeding up again?"

Kevin nodded.

"…Their pressure reduced slightly. We convert that into movement."

The gap widened.

Not dramatically.

But noticeably.

Behind them, the escort ships struggled to maintain spacing.

One corrected too aggressively.

Another undercorrected.

Formation broke slightly.

Carina noticed.

"…They're messing up."

Kevin replied.

"…Yes."

For the first time in the chase—

The enemy formation was not perfect.

The central ship surged forward to compensate.

But now it was slightly isolated.

Kevin's eyes sharpened.

"…Leader separation."

Carina looked confused.

"…That's bad for them?"

Kevin answered.

"…It is exploitable."

A cannon fired from the central ship alone.

Less coordinated than before.

Slight delay from escorts.

Kevin adjusted instantly.

The shot missed wide.

Carina exhaled sharply.

"…They're not working together properly anymore."

Kevin nodded.

"…System strain is visible."

The enemy captain realized it too.

His expression tightened.

"…He is forcing divergence."

He raised his hand.

But the timing between ships no longer matched perfectly.

Another volley fired—

But not synchronized.

And Kevin saw it.

The real break.

"…Now."

He shifted the ship directly through the widest gap between escort misalignment and central ship overextension.

Not just slipping through—

But forcing separation further as he passed.

BOOM—!

Cannons fired behind.

Too late again.

Carina held her breath.

Then exhaled sharply.

"…We're getting away."

Kevin didn't confirm it.

Not yet.

"…Not fully."

Behind them, the enemy formation was visibly unstable now.

Still dangerous.

Still chasing.

But no longer perfect.

The captain stared forward.

"…He is dismantling the formation mid-chase."

One escort ship corrected too sharply and nearly collided with wave spacing.

Another slowed to avoid collision.

The structure cracked further.

Carina looked back again.

"…They're actually struggling now."

Kevin nodded.

"…Yes."

But the ship wasn't untouched.

Small cracks had formed in the hull reinforcement.

Stress from earlier volleys had accumulated.

Carina noticed.

"…Hey… the ship is leaking a bit at the side."

Kevin glanced down briefly.

"…Minor breach."

Carina frowned.

"…Minor doesn't sound good when we're in the middle of the sea."

Kevin replied.

"…It is manageable."

The enemy pursuit slowed again.

Not retreating.

But losing precision.

Kevin finally allowed a slight increase in distance.

Not escape yet.

But breathing space.

Carina sat down slowly.

"…So what happens now?"

Kevin answered.

"…They reassess."

Behind them, the enemy ships began regrouping.

Not chasing at full pressure.

Reforming structure.

The captain raised his hand again.

But this time—

He paused before giving the order.

"…He is no longer predictable."

Silence on his deck.

Then—

"…We adapt."

Carina looked forward again.

"…They're stopping for now?"

Kevin nodded slightly.

"…Temporary reset."

The sea finally felt less compressed.

Not safe.

But open again.

Carina leaned back.

"…That was actually kind of intense."

Kevin replied calmly.

"…It will escalate again."

Carina sighed.

"…Of course it will."

The ship moved forward steadily now.

Faster than before.

With distance slowly increasing.

Kevin checked the hull again.

Damage confirmed.

But not critical.

"…We survived the first full engagement cycle."

Carina blinked.

"…There are cycles now?"

Kevin nodded.

"…Yes."

Behind them—

The enemy ships were still visible.

But no longer perfectly aligned.

And for the first time—

They were no longer just chasing.

They were learning.

And so was Kevin.
