Chapter 4 - The Escape Tunnel

The moment Aarav and Aelina stepped into the hidden passage, the wall behind them sealed shut with a metallic hiss.

Darkness swallowed them.

For a brief second, Aarav could hear nothing except their breathing.

Then the tunnel lights flickered on.

A dim line of blue strips ran along the walls, casting an eerie glow over the narrow corridor.

The air was cold.

Too cold.

It smelt of old metal, damp stone, and something sterile—like the underground lab had once extended far deeper than anyone had ever known.

Aarav tightened his grip around Aelina's hand.

"Can you walk properly?"

Aelina nodded, but her steps were slower now.

The wound on her shoulder had begun to bleed through the torn white fabric.

Aarav's eyes kept drifting to it.

Every time he looked, it reminded him of something impossible.

She bled.

She felt pain.

She wasn't a machine.

She was alive.

Aelina noticed his gaze and gave him a faint smile.

"It will heal."

Aarav frowned.

"You were shot."

"My cells regenerate faster than normal humans."

She paused.

"Approximately twelve times faster."

Aarav let out a breath that was almost a laugh.

"Why do you always explain everything like a system report?"

For the first time since the attack, something playful flickered in her expression.

"Because that is how I was taught to communicate."

Then her voice softened.

"But… I am learning."

Something about the way she said it made Aarav's chest tighten.

She was learning.

Learning how to live.

Learning how to be human.

And somehow, he had become the first person in this time to guide her.

The tunnel stretched endlessly ahead.

Its walls were lined with old cables and strange symbols carved into steel plates.

Aarav shone his flashlight over them.

They looked nothing like any modern language.

"What is this?"

Aelina glanced at the symbols.

"Temporal engineering code."

Aarav blinked.

"That doesn't help."

She gave a faint nod.

"It means this tunnel was built to survive timeline collapses."

That sentence made him stop walking.

"Timeline… collapses?"

Aelina looked at him, her blue eyes glowing softly in the dark.

"In the future, time itself became unstable."

Her voice was quiet.

"Experiments with temporal gateways fractured multiple causal lines."

Aarav stared at her.

He had only just wrapped his mind around the idea of future humans.

Now she was telling him time could break.

Before he could ask more, a deep rumble shook the tunnel.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

The alarm sirens from the lab behind them echoed faintly through the walls.

Aelina's face hardened.

"They're trying to breach the escape route."

Aarav's pulse quickened.

"How much time do we have?"

"Not enough."

They hurried deeper into the passage.

The corridor began sloping downward.

The temperature dropped further.

Their footsteps echoed endlessly, as if the tunnel had no end.

Then suddenly—

Aelina stumbled.

"Aelina!"

Aarav caught her before she fell.

Her breathing had become uneven.

The glow beneath her skin flickered weakly.

His voice lowered.

"You need to rest."

"No."

She tried to straighten herself.

"We must keep moving."

Aarav shook his head.

"You just got hit by some futuristic energy weapon."

He carefully guided her toward a recessed platform built into the wall.

It looked like an emergency maintenance alcove.

"Sit."

For a moment, Aelina simply stared at him.

Then, surprisingly, she obeyed.

Aarav knelt beside her and gently inspected the wound.

The skin around her shoulder was already closing.

Not fully healed.

But healing.

Still, the sight of blood on her white suit made something twist inside him.

Without thinking, he removed his jacket.

"Aarav…"

He carefully draped it over her shoulders.

"It's cold."

For the first time, Aelina looked almost… stunned.

Her fingers lightly touched the fabric.

"You gave this to me."

Aarav raised an eyebrow.

"Obviously."

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

"In my era, protective gestures are usually calculated through necessity protocols."

Aarav looked at her.

"And now?"

Her glowing eyes met his.

"This feels different."

The silence between them deepened.

The blue light of the tunnel reflected in her silver hair, making her look almost ethereal.

Aarav suddenly became aware of how close they were.

Close enough to hear each other's breathing.

Close enough to feel the warmth of her hand against his.

Then Aelina spoke softly.

"Why did you protect me?"

The question caught him off guard.

He blinked.

"What kind of question is that?"

Her gaze never left him.

"You had no reason to risk your life."

Aarav hesitated.

Then he answered honestly.

"Because you looked scared."

For a second, Aelina's expression changed.

The calm future-girl persona cracked.

A vulnerable softness appeared in her eyes.

"In my future," she whispered, "people do not protect without purpose."

Aarav smiled faintly.

"Well, in my time, sometimes we do."

A long silence followed.

Then Aelina leant her head lightly against his shoulder.

The movement was small.

Careful.

Almost uncertain.

Aarav froze.

But he didn't move away.

Instead, something warm settled inside him.

Comfort.

Trust.

A strange connection that had formed in only a few hours.

Suddenly, the tunnel lights ahead flashed red.

A holographic warning appeared.

ESCAPE TERMINAL: 50 METERS

Aelina straightened immediately.

"We're close."

They stood and hurried forward.

At the end of the corridor stood a circular steel door.

Unlike the others, this one bore a glowing blue symbol at its centre.

A handprint scanner.

Aelina placed her palm against it.

The door responded instantly.

ACCESS GRANTED: AELINA-500

The steel door slowly opened.

A gust of fresh night air rushed in.

Aarav stepped out and froze.

They were no longer beneath the mansion.

They stood at the edge of an abandoned forest on the outskirts of Delhi.

The moonlight spilt across the trees.

The city lights glimmered faintly in the distance.

They had escaped.

For now.

But before relief could settle in, Aelina suddenly looked up at the sky.

Her eyes widened.

A bright blue streak cut across the clouds like a falling star.

Then another.

And another.

Aarav stared.

"What is that?"

Aelina's voice was barely above a whisper.

"Signal satellites."

Her face turned pale.

"They've started searching globally."

Then she looked at him.

And what she said next sent a chill through him.

"The next girl has already awakened."
