The days following their arrival in the forest passed in a way that felt almost unreal compared to everything Silas and Madam had experienced before.
There were many Eevee and their various evolutions spread throughout the rainforest, far more than what they had initially encountered by the lake. The group they met on the first day turned out to be only a small portion of the population, and as time passed, more and more tribes revealed themselves from deeper within the forest.
Monferno and Elekid integrated quickly.
Through them, Silas was able to bridge the communication gap, learning more about the environment and its inhabitants in a way that would have otherwise been impossible. Their interactions were natural, almost effortless, and it wasn't long before the surrounding Pokémon began to treat Silas and Madam as something closer to guests than intruders.
It was through Monferno that Silas first heard the name of the area.
Phoenix Forest.
The name carried a certain weight, though its meaning wasn't immediately clear. Still, given everything they had already experienced. The typeless energy, the unusual ecosystem, and the sheer number of Eeveelutions, the name felt appropriate.
After their initial exchange with the Vaporeon, word spread quickly.
What had begun as a small interaction grew into something much larger as other Eeveelutions began to arrive. Jolteon appeared first, their movements quick and sharp as they approached the edge of the clearing. Flareon followed not long after, their presence accompanied by a subtle rise in temperature. Leafeon moved more quietly, blending almost seamlessly into the surrounding vegetation, while Umbreon watched from the shadows, their glowing rings faintly visible even during the day. Sylveon arrived last among the more common evolutions, their ribbon-like feelers swaying gently as they observed from a distance before slowly drawing closer.
Each group approached with caution and Silas didn't rush them.
Instead, he allowed the environment to settle, letting the earlier interactions with the Vaporeon establish a baseline level of trust. That trust, combined with something far simpler, proved to be enough to close the distance.
Food.
Madam began preparing grilled fish once more, while Silas continued producing Pokéblocks and poffins using the ingredients he had brought and the resources gathered from the forest. The aroma spread quickly, carried by the humid air, and it didn't take long for curiosity to overcome hesitation.
The first to step forward were the younger Pokémon.
Like with the Vaporeon group from before, Eevee first approached carefully but then abandoned caution when food was placed in front of them.
Once the first Eevee tasted the food, the reaction spread quickly through the various groups. The hesitation that had defined their earlier approach disappeared, replaced by clear interest and excitement. Within minutes, more Pokémon began to gather, each drawn in by the same simple offering.
It wasn't long before the clearing filled. Silas estimated roughly 60 Pokémon surrounding them, all at varying distances, some close enough to interact freely while others remained at the edge, observing carefully.
Despite the numbers, there was no sense of hostility, only curiosity.
That changed slightly when the Espeon arrived.
Unlike the others, they did not rely on physical cues alone. Their presence was subtle at first, but Silas felt it almost immediately—a faint pressure at the edge of his awareness, followed by a calm, measured voice that entered his mind without warning.
It was a telepathic link. The Espeon had initiated direct communication.
Their curiosity was more controlled, more deliberate. While the other Eeveelutions had allowed food and interaction to guide their judgment, the Espeon sought understanding first. Silas didn't resist the connection.
Instead, he responded calmly, keeping his thoughts steady as he reached for a few poffins and Pokéblocks he had prepared earlier.
"Give these a try and let me know how they taste."
The lead Espeon stepped forward, its gaze fixed on Silas as it accepted the offering.
There was a brief pause and then it took a bite.
The Espeon's composure faltered for just a moment before it quickly finished the entire poffin, its earlier caution replaced by clear interest.
Another voice entered Silas's mind, noticeably more animated than the first.
"Do you have more?"
Silas almost smiled at the shift.
"I have some," he replied, "and I can always make more."
That was enough.
The second Espeon tried one as well, and its reaction was even more pronounced, its focus shifting entirely to the food as it quickly consumed it. The change didn't go unnoticed, and soon the surrounding Pokémon grew more interested.
The only problem was scale. There were far more Pokémon than Silas and Madam had prepared for, and even with their current supplies, it wasn't sustainable. Fortunately, the wild Pokémon adapted quickly.
After observing the ingredients being used, several groups dispersed into the forest and returned with their own contributions. Berries, herbs, and various materials were brought from different areas, creating a shared pool of resources that expanded what Silas and Madam could produce.
Among those materials was something particularly valuable.
The Omni Berry.
Silas examined it carefully, noting the density of neutral energy contained within it. Unlike most berries, which aligned with specific typings, this one carried a balanced energy that allowed it to accumulate within the body before gradually integrating to strengthen overall structure and stability.
It was perfectly suited to an environment like this.
At the same time, the Vaporeon contributed in their own way, catching large quantities of fish from the lake. The population was high enough that overfishing wasn't a concern, allowing for a steady supply without disrupting the ecosystem.
The Ursaring once again took charge of preparation.
Its movements were efficient and precise as it cleaned and portioned the fish, while Madam handled the cooking itself, seasoning and grilling each portion with practiced ease. The steady rhythm of preparation and cooking created a sense of normalcy that felt almost out of place given their recent experiences.
The atmosphere shifted as the evening progressed.
What had begun as cautious interaction turned into something closer to a gathering. Pokémon that had initially remained distant began to move closer, their earlier hesitation replaced by familiarity. Even the more reserved species, such as the Umbreon and Leafeon, relaxed enough to remain within sight rather than keeping their distance entirely.
For the first time since entering Mount Silver, there was no immediate tension.
No constant threat, no need to remain on edge, just a calm environment. It was a nice change of pace.
Silas found himself relaxing slightly, though not enough to lose awareness entirely.
Before the night ended, the lead Espeon approached him again, this time without initiating telepathy immediately. When it did speak, the connection was lighter, more casual than before.
The remaining Omni Berries, it explained, could be kept as a gesture of goodwill.
Silas and Madam of course didn't object to this.
Though she didn't say it directly, there was a subtle shift in Madam's attitude toward Silas, one that carried a quiet sense of approval.
By the time the night settled fully, the clearing had quieted.
The surrounding Pokémon dispersed gradually, returning to their respective areas within the forest. A few remained nearby, but there was no longer any tension in their presence.
Silas lay back, his body relaxing in a way it hadn't in days.
For the first time since the expedition began, he was able to sleep without interruption, without the need to remain partially alert, and without the constant pressure of potential danger.
Surrounded by allies, however temporary that alliance might be, he allowed himself to rest fully.
And for that night, at least, it was enough.
