Chapter 3 - The Roots That Whisper

The morning at Heartspell Academy began with something unusual.

Silence.

Normally, the academy woke with noise—students rushing through corridors, magic sparking in the training fields, laughter echoing across the courtyards.

But today felt different.

Like the academy itself was holding its breath.

A cold wind moved through the ancient courtyard tree, rustling its glowing leaves softly.

And beneath the academy…

Something stirred.

The Dream

Elira Moonpetal woke suddenly.

Her breath was uneven.

Her heart was racing.

She sat up in her dorm bed, clutching her blanket tightly.

"…A dream again."

The same dream.

It had happened three nights in a row.

She closed her eyes, trying to remember it clearly.

Darkness.

Roots.

Ancient glowing vines spreading across stone walls.

A deep voice echoing through the earth.

Child of the Root…

You must awaken…

Elira shivered.

"I don't understand…"

She looked at her hands.

Nothing unusual.

Just normal magic.

Normal.

Right?

But the dream voice had sounded so real.

Almost like someone was speaking directly to her.

Morning in the Dorms

Downstairs in the dorm lounge, the atmosphere was much louder.

Seraphina Valtoria stood dramatically in the center of the room.

"Attention everyone!"

Nobody listened.

Liora Windelle ran past the couch.

"Race you to the courtyard!"

Milo Windray casually floated a pillow through the air using wind magic.

Ayla Starling was practicing poses in the mirror.

"I think I look heroic from this angle."

"You look ridiculous," Milo said.

Arden Volt suddenly slammed open the dorm door.

"WHO WANTS TO SEE LIGHTNING?"

"No!" several students shouted at once.

The pillow Milo was floating flew straight into Arden's face.

"Hey!"

Meanwhile—

Celine Frostaria quietly sat in a corner chair, reading.

Mina Rosehart brought her a cup of tea.

"You look tired," Mina said softly.

"I didn't sleep much."

"Dreams?"

Celine nodded slightly.

"…Something like that."

Across the room, Theo Ravensky watched the students carefully.

But his eyes kept drifting toward one person.

Elira.

She looked nervous.

More nervous than usual.

Theo tilted his head slightly.

Something happened to her.

His memory magic told him that much.

But the exact detail still escaped him.

And that bothered him.

Student Council Tower

High above the academy, the Student Council Chamber was already active.

Aria Solenne stood near the window overlooking the academy grounds.

Sunlight reflected off her golden magic aura.

Behind her, the council members sat around the crystal table.

Kael Virestorm spoke first.

"The energy disturbance yesterday."

"We need to investigate it further."

Dorian Ashveil folded his arms.

"The magic was ancient."

Lys Belmora tapped her finger slowly against the table.

"Not just ancient."

"Primordial."

Noah Elderglen looked thoughtful.

"I felt it too."

"It felt like nature magic… but older."

Evan Starcrest leaned back in his chair.

"So basically…"

"We're saying something weird is happening under the academy?"

Lucian Nightrow, who had been silent the entire time, spoke quietly.

"…Yes."

Everyone turned toward him.

Lucian rarely spoke unless necessary.

Aria finally turned away from the window.

"There is one more thing."

She looked toward Professor Thorne.

"Professor?"

The professor stepped forward.

His expression was serious.

"I believe the magic originated from a student."

The council members exchanged glances.

"Who?" Kael asked immediately.

The professor hesitated.

"…I'm not certain yet."

But Aria noticed the hesitation.

She said nothing.

But her eyes narrowed slightly.

Classes Begin

Later that morning, students gathered for Advanced Magical Theory.

The classroom was enormous, with floating chalkboards and magical diagrams drifting through the air.

Professor Selene Astryx stood at the front.

She was known as one of the academy's most mysterious teachers.

"Today," she began calmly,

"We will discuss Legendary Magic."

The room immediately became quiet.

Legendary Magic was rare.

Extremely rare.

Professor Astryx raised her hand.

A magical projection appeared in the air.

Symbols.

Ancient runes.

"These powers appear once every few generations," she explained.

"They are tied to ancient forces of the world."

Seraphina raised her hand dramatically.

"So basically they're the strongest powers?"

"Yes."

Arden leaned forward.

"Do we have any students with Legendary Magic here?"

The classroom became very quiet.

Everyone glanced toward the Student Council members.

Professor Astryx smiled slightly.

"Perhaps."

Elira lowered her head quickly.

She didn't want anyone looking at her.

But Theo noticed again.

And the strange feeling in his mind grew stronger.

Training Field Chaos

After class, students gathered at the training grounds again.

Instructor Blaze stood at the center of the field.

"Pair up."

"Today we practice magical combat control."

Excited murmurs spread through the crowd.

Liora immediately grabbed Milo.

"You're fighting me."

"Why me?"

"Because you're annoying."

Fair enough.

Nearby, Leo Suncrest faced Kaiden Ashford.

"Don't cry when I win," Kaiden said confidently.

Leo grinned.

"We'll see about that."

Meanwhile—

Elira quietly stood near the edge of the field.

She wasn't planning to fight.

But suddenly—

"Partner."

She turned.

Dorian Ashveil stood behind her.

The gravity mage stared down at her calmly.

"I… I'm not very good at combat," Elira said nervously.

"That's fine."

The platform beneath them slowly lifted into the air.

"Just try."

The Duel

Instructor Blaze raised his hand.

"Begin."

Magic erupted across the field.

Wind blasts.

Lightning strikes.

Fire spirals.

Milo dodged Liora's wind attacks while laughing.

"You're trying to kill me!"

"Stop moving then!"

Meanwhile—

Leo summoned a flaming phoenix that clashed against Kaiden's lightning.

Energy exploded across the platform.

Students cheered.

But on Elira's platform…

Nothing happened.

Dorian stood calmly.

"Attack."

Elira shook her head.

"I don't want to hurt anyone."

"You won't."

Dorian gently increased gravity around her feet.

Just slightly.

To test her reaction.

Elira panicked.

Her magic reacted instinctively.

For a brief moment—

The entire platform filled with glowing green roots.

Ancient.

Powerful.

Alive.

The roots cracked through the stone floor before vanishing instantly.

Dorian's eyes widened.

For the first time since entering the academy…

He looked shocked.

Elira gasped.

"I—I'm sorry!"

Dorian slowly lowered the gravity field.

"…Interesting."

Across the training grounds…

Lucian Nightrow had seen everything.

And far away…

Five hidden students felt it too.

The seal beneath the academy glowed again.

Beneath the Academy

Deep underground, the ancient chamber pulsed with energy.

The glowing symbol on the floor expanded slightly.

Cracks formed in the magical seal.

One of the shadowed students smiled.

"She's awakening."

Another voice replied.

"Soon."

The first student looked upward.

Toward the academy.

"Everything is moving exactly as planned."

Evening Calm

As night returned to Heartspell Academy, the students slowly relaxed.

The dorm lounges filled with laughter again.

Milo told exaggerated stories about the duels.

Seraphina insisted she would have won any match.

Liora challenged everyone to another race.

But Elira sat quietly near the window again.

Her hands trembled slightly.

Those roots…

That was my magic.

And somewhere beneath the academy…

The ancient voice whispered again.

Child of the Root…

The world will soon remember you.

Elira closed her eyes tightly.

"I don't want this…"

But destiny rarely asked permission.

The training grounds slowly returned to normal.

Students continued their duels.

Lightning clashed with fire.

Wind sliced through the air.

But on one floating platform…

Silence lingered.

Dorian Ashveil stared at the place where the glowing roots had appeared moments earlier.

The stone floor was perfectly intact again.

No cracks.

No vines.

No sign that anything unusual had happened.

But he had seen it.

He was certain.

Dorian slowly looked at Elira Moonpetal.

She stood frozen, her hands trembling slightly.

"I'm… sorry," she said quietly.

Dorian tilted his head.

"For what?"

"My magic…"

"You lost control."

Elira nodded quickly.

"Yes."

Dorian studied her carefully.

Most students panicked when their magic surged unexpectedly.

But that power…

It had not felt chaotic.

It had felt ancient.

Controlled.

Like something older than the academy itself had briefly awakened.

Dorian stepped closer.

"What exactly did you feel?"

Elira looked confused.

"Feel?"

"When your magic appeared."

Elira hesitated.

"…Warm."

Dorian raised an eyebrow.

"Warm?"

She nodded slowly.

"Like… the ground was alive."

Dorian remained silent.

That was not a description he had ever heard before.

Chaos Below

Meanwhile, the rest of the training field had turned into complete chaos.

"HA!" Arden Volt shouted as lightning exploded across his platform.

"This is awesome!"

Across from him, Milo Windray dodged a bolt and spun through the air using wind magic.

"You're trying to fry me!"

"That's the point!"

Nearby, Leo Suncrest finally managed to summon his flaming phoenix successfully.

The bird of fire soared through the air, leaving glowing embers behind it.

Students cheered.

"Okay that one was cool," Milo admitted.

Liora Windelle landed beside them.

"I could outrun that bird."

"Please don't test that theory," Leo said.

Instructor Blaze crossed his arms as he watched the chaos.

"Control," he muttered.

"None of them understand control."

The Observers

High above the training grounds, two figures stood on a balcony.

Professor Selene Astryx.

And Professor Orion Thorne.

Both had seen the sudden burst of green magic.

Selene spoke first.

"That was it again."

Orion nodded slowly.

"Yes."

"The same energy signature."

Selene looked down at Elira thoughtfully.

"That girl."

"You noticed her too?"

"Yes."

Orion folded his arms.

"If she truly possesses that magic…"

Selene finished his sentence quietly.

"…then the seal beneath the academy may react."

The wind blew softly across the balcony.

Neither teacher looked comfortable with that thought.

The Student Council Notices

Inside the Student Council tower, several members had also sensed the disturbance.

Noah Elderglen suddenly looked up from his book.

"Did you feel that?"

Kael Virestorm stopped mid-sentence.

"…Yes."

Dorian Ashveil entered the chamber moments later.

Everyone immediately looked at him.

"Well?" Kael asked.

Dorian walked toward the table calmly.

"It was a student."

Aria Solenne stood slowly.

"Who?"

Dorian paused.

"…Elira Moonpetal."

The room became very quiet.

Evan Starcrest leaned forward.

"The quiet girl?"

Noah looked surprised.

"She barely speaks."

Lys Belmora smiled faintly.

"Those are often the dangerous ones."

Aria looked thoughtful.

"Elira Moonpetal…"

She had seen the girl before.

Quiet.

Kind.

Unassuming.

Yet the magic Dorian described sounded anything but ordinary.

Aria spoke calmly.

"We will observe her for now."

Kael frowned.

"You want to wait?"

"Yes."

Aria's voice was firm.

"If she truly carries ancient magic…"

"…we must understand it first."

Dinner Hall

That evening, the Grand Dining Hall buzzed with conversation.

Students filled the long tables as floating lanterns illuminated the enormous room.

Food appeared magically across the tables.

Roasted meats.

Fruit.

Warm bread.

Arden Volt piled an enormous amount of food onto his plate.

"I burned like six thousand calories today."

"You didn't burn anything," Milo said.

"You almost burned the field."

Seraphina leaned back dramatically.

"I think I fought beautifully today."

"You didn't fight anyone," Liora said.

"I fought emotionally."

"That's not a thing."

Across the hall, Elira quietly ate her dinner.

She kept her head low.

But she felt something strange.

Like eyes were on her.

She slowly looked up.

Across the room…

Dorian Ashveil was watching her.

And not just him.

Theo Ravensky.

Lucian Nightrow.

Even Aria Solenne.

Elira immediately looked back down at her plate.

Why is everyone staring at me…?

Theo's Curiosity

Later that night, Theo Ravensky walked through the academy library.

He carried several books.

But he wasn't reading them.

Instead, he walked straight toward Elira's usual study table.

She sat there again, surrounded by books about magical plants and ancient nature spells.

Theo sat down across from her.

Elira nearly dropped her book.

"Oh!"

Theo adjusted his glasses.

"Sorry."

"I didn't mean to scare you."

Elira shook her head quickly.

"It's okay."

Theo leaned forward slightly.

"I have a question."

Elira blinked nervously.

"O-Okay?"

Theo spoke calmly.

"During training today."

"Your magic."

Elira froze.

Theo noticed immediately.

"…You don't remember it clearly, do you?"

Elira looked down.

"…No."

Theo tapped the table thoughtfully.

"That's strange."

"Why?"

"Because magic that powerful usually leaves a strong memory trace."

Elira didn't understand.

Theo explained.

"My magic allows me to see memories."

Elira's eyes widened.

"You can see people's memories?"

"Only fragments."

He paused.

"But when I tried earlier…"

"…there was nothing."

Elira looked confused.

"What does that mean?"

Theo leaned back in his chair.

"It means something is hiding that memory."

And that was not normal.

The Hidden Group

Deep within a forgotten section of the academy—

Five students gathered again.

A dim magical lantern lit the underground room.

One of them spoke first.

"The roots manifested again today."

Another nodded.

"She's progressing faster than expected."

A third student leaned against the wall.

"Soon the seal will respond fully."

One of them looked toward the ceiling.

"The academy suspects nothing."

A quiet voice corrected them.

"Not yet."

They all turned toward the speaker.

"Still," the first student continued calmly.

"We must remain patient."

"When the time comes…"

"…Heartspell Academy will belong to us."

The lantern flickered.

And beneath the academy floor—

The ancient seal cracked just a little more.

The Whisper Again

That night, Elira couldn't sleep.

Moonlight spilled across the dorm room.

She sat up slowly in bed.

The whisper returned.

Soft.

Ancient.

Child of the Root…

Elira covered her ears.

"Stop…"

But the voice continued.

You were born for this.

Tears filled her eyes.

"I don't want this power…"

Silence followed.

Then one final whisper echoed through her mind.

The world will need it.

And far beneath Heartspell Academy…

Something ancient finally opened its eyes.
