Chapter 1 - The day everything started

It was a normal day or so I thought.

I stood in front of the mirror, smoothing down the fabric of my black dress. The heels clicked softly against the floor as I stepped back, studying my reflection. Everything was in place. Perfect. Controlled.

Just like always.

Funerals required that.

The air outside was cold, heavier than it should have been for this time of year. Or maybe that was just me.

When I arrived, the silence hit first.

Then the crying.

My mother's voice broke through it all.

"Why… why did this happen…"

I didn't move toward her.

I didn't say anything.

I just sat.

And stared.

Today, we were supposed to go out.

You promised.

You said you and your wife would be back today.

But the plane never landed.

It crashed.

And just like that.

you were both gone.

A week.

It had already been a week.

A week in a world without you.

I noticed her then.

Small. Fragile. Standing near the front.

Luna.

My niece.

Barely three years old, clutching the edge of a chair as if it could keep her from falling apart. She didn't cry like the others. She didn't understand.

Not yet.

The room shifted.

The quiet deepened.

A man in a black suit entered, carrying a leather case. His glasses hid his eyes, but his posture spoke of authority. Control.

He cleared his throat.

"As all of you know, I was hired by the Black family as their lawyer. I have been entrusted with the distribution of inheritance… and the custody of the child, Luna."

Every head turned.

Even I looked up.

"It was the parents' wish that custody be granted to Miss Black's mother. However, due to child care regulations, she is considered too old to assume guardianship."

The silence shattered.

Voices rose. Anger. Shock.

Lies.

Everyone knew.

Money had moved. Strings had been pulled.

My mother was 72. She had me in her forties. I was thirty now.

Old but not incapable.

"Not everyone is eligible," the lawyer continued calmly. "You must possess a valid adoption certificate and demonstrate a direct connection to the parents."

That was all it took.

My aunt stepped forward immediately, her voice sharp with false confidence.

"Sir, we meet those conditions. My husband is his uncle, and we have held the necessary documents for over twenty years. We are in our fifties perfectly capable."

Before the lawyer could respond, another voice cut in.

"I disagree."

My second uncle.

Anger burned in his eyes.

"They are barely related. We are far more suitable candidates than a housewerker's son."

The room descended into chaos.

Voices layered over one another.

Greed disguised as concern.

I didn't think.

I didn't hesitate.

All I heard was the noise.

and beneath it, something else.

A memory.

I had never felt anything when I was a child.

No joy. No sadness.

Nothing.

Until him.

My brother.

He smiled when others didn't.

He stood when others fell.

He held me close when I didn't know how to reach back.

He gave me something I didn't understand, but I knew it mattered.

And then she came.

Juli.

When she smiled, the world felt… lighter.

Warmer.

She didn't look at me like I was broken.

She spoke to me. Sat with me. Laughed with me.

Slowly, quietly , she became my world too.

But my brother saw something I didn't.

Or maybe he feared something I couldn't understand.

Because one day, he sent me away.

Training replaced everything.

Discipline. Structure. Perfection.

Four military achievements in two years.

Top of my class.

Best student.

Award after award.

My room filled with proof, that I could survive alone.

That I didn't need anyone.

But standing there, in that room full of voices and lies.

I knew that wasn't true.

Not anymore.

"I will adopt her."

The words left my mouth before the thought fully formed.

Silence fell.

Complete. Absolute.

Every eye turned to me.

"I will take custody of my niece," I continued, my voice steady, controlled. "As a secondary guardian alongside my mother."

Shock rippled through the room.

Plans collapsed.

Greed died in silence.

The lawyer studied me carefully.

"Miss Jones Black… are you certain you are qualified?"

I met his gaze.

Unflinching.

"Yes."

No hesitation.

"My brother designated me as secondary guardian. I have held an adoption certificate since Luna's birth, under his instruction."

Murmurs spread.

I didn't stop.

"I am the second shareholder of the company. I can manage operations until she turns eighteen. There will be no disruption."

I took a step forward.

"I will relocate if necessary. Hire a nanny. Maintain weekly oversight of company affairs."

Silence again.

Heavier this time.

Final.

Then, the lawyer smiled.

A small, knowing smile.

As if none of this surprised him.

As if he had been waiting.

My brother had planned this.

Even in death,he had trusted me.

Around me, the room felt different now.

Quieter.

Smaller.

Powerless.

Every greedy hand had been cut off before it could reach her.

I turned my gaze toward Luna.

She looked back at me, confused… but calm.

As if, somehow she knew.

A world without you.

That's what this was supposed to be.

But you were still here.

In your plans.

In your trust.

In her.

And I would not fail you.

Not now.

Not ever.
