Chapter 236 - Chapter Two Hundred Thirty-Six: The New Cousin

Chapter Two Hundred Thirty-Six: The New Cousin

Elizabeth sat in the garden, her hands wrapped around a cup of tea, her eyes fixed on the horizon. The sun was rising over the city, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink and gold. The birds were singing. The flowers were blooming. The world was waking up.

She was thirty-four years old, and she had been searching for her family for as long as she could remember.

Grace sat beside her.

"How are you feeling?" Grace asked.

Elizabeth was quiet for a moment. "Overwhelmed. Grateful. Scared."

Grace nodded. "That's normal. That's what finding family feels like."

Elizabeth looked at her. "How do you know?"

Grace smiled. "I've seen it before. Many times. This family has a way of finding lost relatives."

---

Elizabeth's story was a sad one.

Her grandmother had been Lina's sister, the one who had died before Lina was born. But that was not the whole truth. The truth was more complicated, more painful.

Elizabeth's grandmother had not died. She had run away. She had changed her name. She had started a new life.

"She was pregnant," Elizabeth said. "She was young. She was scared. Her family disowned her. So she left."

Grace took her hand. "I'm sorry."

Elizabeth shook her head. "Don't be sorry. It's not your fault."

Grace was quiet for a moment. "What happened to her?"

Elizabeth's eyes filled with tears. "She died when I was ten. Cancer. She never told me about this family. I found out after she died, going through her things."

Grace squeezed her hand. "You found us."

Elizabeth nodded. "I found you."

---

The family welcomed Elizabeth with open arms.

They invited her to Sunday dinners. They introduced her to cousins and aunts and uncles. They shared stories and photographs and memories.

Elizabeth was overwhelmed.

"There are so many of you," she said.

Grace laughed. "There are. And more every year."

Elizabeth shook her head. "I've never had a family before. I've always been alone."

Grace took her hand. "You're not alone anymore."

---

Elizabeth learned about her heritage.

She learned about Lina, the woman who had survived a coma and built a family. She learned about Ethan, the man who had never given up. She learned about Victoria, who had been a stranger and become family. She learned about Victor, who had waited thirty years to be a father. She learned about Katherine, who had kept secrets and finally told the truth. She learned about David, who had been a stranger and become a brother.

She learned about Grace, who had walked on Mars. About Stella, who had unlocked the secrets of the universe. About Clara, who had danced her way into the hearts of millions. About Samuel, who had saved lives and healed bodies.

She learned about Maria, who had found her birth mother. About Sarah, who had been searching for her daughter.

She learned about the constellation of stars.

"I can't believe I'm part of this," Elizabeth said.

Lily smiled. "You are. And we're so glad to have you."

---

Elizabeth met the children.

They were curious about her, asking questions, wanting to know her story.

"Where did you come from?" one of them asked.

Elizabeth knelt down to their level. "A long way away. But I'm here now."

"Are you staying?"

Elizabeth looked at Grace. "If you'll have me."

Grace nodded. "We'll have you. For as long as you want."

---

Elizabeth stayed for Sunday dinner.

The penthouse was filled with people. Every generation was there, from the oldest to the youngest. The rooms were crowded with laughter and conversation, the air thick with the smell of fresh flowers and baking bread.

Elizabeth sat at the table, looking around at all the people, her eyes wide with wonder.

"I can't believe this is real," she said to Grace.

Grace smiled. "It's real."

Elizabeth shook her head. "I've been searching for so long. I never thought I'd find you."

Grace took her hand. "But you did. And now you're home."

---

After dinner, Elizabeth sat in the garden with Grace.

The stars were out, scattered across the sky like tiny diamonds. The air was cool and quiet. The city hummed in the distance.

"Thank you," Elizabeth said.

Grace looked at her. "For what?"

"For welcoming me. For believing me. For treating me like family."

Grace took her hand. "You are family. You've always been family. You just didn't know it."

Elizabeth's eyes filled with tears. "I've never had that before."

Grace squeezed her hand. "You have it now."

---

That night, Elizabeth sat in the garden alone.

The stars were out, scattered across the sky like tiny diamonds. The air was cool and quiet. The city hummed in the distance.

She looked up at the sky.

"Grandmother," she whispered. "I found them. I found our family."

The wind blew through the garden.

Elizabeth smiled.

She knew her grandmother was listening.

She thought about her grandmother, who had run away. Who had been scared. Who had been alone.

She thought about the family she had found. The love. The laughter. The constellation of stars.

She was not alone anymore.

She was home.
