Now, as much as we might like to follow them there is a matter of importance that requires our attention. So, let us move of our own volition back to the graveyard, where a familiar player has been hiding in the shadows the whole time. He watches from his place amongst the untouched trees as the fire brigade continues to fight the small remaining fires that yet remain across the smoldering field.
However, this is not the sight which has drawn our observer to this place. No, for that we must turn the clock back some, when the altercation in the graveyard is just about to commence. The voyeur steps into the moonlight, revealing themselves to be Samuel. He is walking beneath the trees, when he stops altogether and gazes from the security of the shadows.
He sees a man standing before his wife's grave and he wonders if this man could be the boy he seeks. After all, it has been ten years since they last saw each other and who else would stand vigil before his wife's final resting place? Only a member of his family would care in the slightest to take up this observance.
Samuel makes to enact his entrance when caution ceases his movements. There are many people milling about in the shadows, a presence that his quarry has noted as well. Then, comes the myriad of torches that spread across the grounds and if it's one thing that tops the list of things that the undead hate, it's fire. As such, he doesn't dare move beyond the confines of the tree-line.
He considered leaving so as to avoid any contact with the encroaching flames, when the violent exchange broke out. It captivates him and he sticks around to watch it unfold. First there's the four men, against whom his prospected son displays an impressive array of skills as he takes on each one without flinching.
Most interesting though is the battle that broils between his quarry and the red knight who seems to have appeared out of nowhere. They fight fiercely and not even the raging fire, which comes dangerously close to lighting up the trees, can scare the vampire away from the exciting spectacle that flashes before his very eyes.
Samuel watches with all the more intensity as the altercation reaches the point where his prospected son is ready to deliver the decisive blow against his adversary. He gazes with rapt fascination as this same man throws away that opportune moment to save a worthless piece of wood, with his bare hands nonetheless.
That settles the matter. There are only three people in the entire world who give a tinker's damn for these wooden articles. One is he, the other is in the ground and the third is kneeling just a few feet away. The vampire remains stationary inside the concealing shadows as his son is taken away. He continues to watch as the men carry on with their work, till they're all done and gone, along with the fire.
Samuel departs his place and approaches the grave, he has work to do, but the dawn is just breaking, he won't have time. Another thing the undead hate is the sun. For a vampire it means being powerless as their powers are borne from darkness. So, Samuel leaves. He will have to wait till next evening, but wait he will.
