Chapter 15 - Chapter Fourteen: The Path That Shouldn’t Exist

The moment their feet touched the third path—

Everything else disappeared.

---

Not faded.

Not shifted.

Gone.

---

The frozen figures.

The darkness.

The light.

Even her brother.

All of it—

Erased.

---

The space around them reshaped itself instantly, like it had been waiting for this choice to be made.

Or maybe—

For this *refusal*.

---

Elara didn't stop walking.

She couldn't.

The path beneath her feet wasn't stable. It flickered slightly with each step, like it only existed because she continued forward.

Behind her, the boy hesitated.

"…I don't like that everything vanished," he said.

"It didn't vanish," Elara replied.

He looked around.

"…then where did it go?"

A pause.

"…we left it behind."

---

That didn't make him feel better.

---

The air here felt different.

Not heavy like before.

Not cold.

Just—

Empty.

---

No whispers.

No pressure.

No presence.

---

For the first time since this began—

There was nothing watching them.

---

The boy noticed it too.

"…it's quiet," he said.

Elara slowed slightly.

"Yes."

"…that's worse."

She didn't disagree.

---

The path stretched endlessly ahead, thin and shifting, surrounded by a void that didn't feel like darkness.

It felt like *absence*.

Like something had been removed.

Or had never been there to begin with.

---

"What is this place?" he asked.

Elara's gaze remained forward.

"…it's not a place."

"That's not helpful."

"It's not meant to exist," she said.

That—

That made sense.

In the worst way.

---

The path flickered again beneath them.

The boy glanced down quickly.

"Tell me this isn't going to disappear under us."

"It might."

"Great."

---

They kept moving.

Because stopping didn't feel like an option.

Because turning back—

Wasn't one either.

---

Time didn't feel real here.

There were no sounds.

No movement.

No sense of distance.

Just steps.

And silence.

---

Until—

Something changed.

---

The path didn't flicker.

It *stuttered*.

---

Elara stopped instantly.

The boy almost walked into her.

"Why are we stopping—"

"Listen."

---

He froze.

Focused.

---

Nothing.

Still nothing.

---

"…I don't hear anything," he said.

"Exactly."

---

That was wrong.

Even silence had weight.

Even emptiness had presence.

---

This—

Was different.

---

It wasn't silence.

---

It was *missing*.

---

The boy's voice dropped. "…something's off."

"Yes."

---

The path ahead shifted again.

But this time—

It didn't correct itself.

---

It broke.

---

A section of it simply—

Wasn't there.

---

No crack.

No fall.

Just absence.

---

The boy stepped back immediately. "Okay—yeah—that's not normal."

Elara stepped closer.

Carefully.

---

The edge of the path didn't crumble.

Didn't react.

It just ended.

---

"What happens if you step there?" he asked.

Elara didn't answer.

Because she already knew.

---

"You disappear," she said quietly.

---

He exhaled slowly. "Right. So we don't do that."

---

The path flickered again.

More unstable now.

---

"…it's not holding," he said.

Elara's gaze sharpened.

"No."

"Then what do we do?"

---

A pause.

---

Then—

She stepped forward.

---

"Elara—!"

---

She didn't step into the missing space.

She stepped *toward* it.

---

The moment her foot reached the edge—

The path reacted.

---

It formed.

---

Not solid.

Not stable.

But *there*.

---

The boy blinked. "…okay. That's new."

---

Elara didn't look back.

"…it's not built yet," she said.

"What?"

"This place," she continued. "It's not finished."

---

That clicked.

Slowly.

---

"…you mean we're making it?" he asked.

---

She nodded once.

---

The path extended slightly further.

Responding.

---

To her.

---

The boy looked down at his arm.

The mark pulsed faintly.

Different now.

Less aggressive.

More… aware.

---

"…then why is it reacting to me too?" he asked.

---

Elara glanced back at him.

---

"Because it needs both of us."

---

That word again.

---

Both.

---

The path flickered again.

More unstable.

---

"…okay, I'm starting to think this is a really bad idea," he said.

---

"Yes."

---

"…and we're still doing it?"

---

"Yes."

---

He let out a breath.

"…of course we are."

---

He stepped forward.

---

The moment his foot touched the edge—

The space reacted differently.

---

Not forming.

Not stabilizing.

---

Shifting.

---

The path twisted slightly, reacting to him in a way it hadn't to her.

---

Elara noticed immediately.

"…don't force it," she said.

"I'm not trying to!"

"It's responding to you differently."

---

The boy frowned slightly.

"Yeah, I noticed that part."

---

The mark on his arm pulsed again.

The path beneath him darkened slightly.

---

Elara's eyes narrowed.

"…you're pulling it the wrong way."

---

"That's not helpful," he snapped.

---

"Focus," she said.

"On what?!"

---

She stepped closer.

Close enough to grab his hand again.

---

"On me."

---

The moment their hands touched—

The reaction was instant.

---

The path stabilized.

---

Not completely.

But enough.

---

The flickering slowed.

The missing sections filled.

The space held.

---

Both of them froze slightly.

---

"…okay," he said slowly. "That definitely did something."

---

Elara didn't let go.

---

"…we build it together," she said.

---

The realization settled.

Heavy.

Important.

---

The path stretched further ahead.

Clearer now.

Stronger.

---

But not safe.

---

Never safe.

---

Because something else had noticed.

---

Far behind them—

Something moved.

---

Not in the ath.

Not in the void.

---

Outside of it.

---

Watching.

---

Waiting.

---

And slowly—

Learning.

---

The boy felt it first.

That shift.

That pressure.

Returning.

---

"Elara…" he said quietly.

---

She didn't turn.

"…I know."

---

The path flickered again.

Not from instability.

---

From interference.

---

And this time—

They weren't alone anymore.
