The forest no longer slept.
What was once a quiet meeting place between two worlds had become something else something unstable. The glowing trees flickered between light and darkness, and the air carried a tension that neither Victoria nor Samuel could ignore.
Something was coming.
That night, the wind howled through the forest like a warning.
Victoria stood beside Samuel, her glow softer than usual, her eyes searching the shadows.
"You feel it too, don't you?" she asked.
Samuel nodded, his gaze fixed ahead.
"They're close."
From the depths of darkness, figures began to emerge.
Tall. Shadowed. Powerful.
Devils.
Their eyes burned with cold fire, and their presence alone made the forest tremble. They were not like Samuel there was no hesitation in them, no softness.
Only power.
Only control.
Only darkness.
At their center stepped a figure even more terrifying than the rest.
"Samuel," the figure's voice echoed like thunder. "You've forgotten who you are."
Samuel's expression hardened.
"I haven't forgotten," he replied coldly.
"Then explain this."
The figure's gaze shifted to Victoria.
A fairy.
Standing beside their king.
Victoria felt the weight of their stares, but she didn't move back.
She stepped closer to Samuel instead.
"I'm not leaving," she whispered.
Samuel didn't look at her, but his voice softened just enough.
"You might have to."
"No."
The leader of the devils raised a hand.
"This ends now," he declared. "Light does not belong here."
"And neither does cruelty," Victoria replied boldly.
The devils hissed softly, anger rippling through them.
Samuel turned sharply. "Enough!"
The forest shook at the force of his voice.
Silence fell.
But it didn't last.
"Choose," the leader said, his voice quieter now but far more dangerous. "Your throne… or her."
The words cut through the air like a blade.
Samuel froze.
For centuries, he had ruled without question. Power was everything. Loyalty was demanded. Weakness was destroyed.
But now
Victoria stood beside him.
And suddenly, none of that mattered the same way.
"Samuel…" Victoria said softly.
He looked at her.
For the first time, there was conflict in his eyes.
Not anger.
Not power.
But fear of losing something he had only just found.
"I won't choose," he said finally.
The devils stirred, their anger rising.
"You already have," the leader replied.
Without warning
The attack began.
Dark energy surged forward like a storm, tearing through the forest. Trees cracked, the ground split, and shadows rushed toward Victoria.
Samuel reacted instantly.
He stepped in front of her, his wings spreading wide as a shield.
"Stay behind me!" he commanded.
But Victoria didn't run.
Instead, she raised her hands, her light shining brighter than ever before.
"I'm not afraid," she said.
Light exploded outward.
Clashing against darkness.
The force shook everything.
Samuel glanced back at her, surprised.
"You shouldn't be fighting this."
"I'm not fighting," she replied. "I'm protecting."
Their powers collided again light and darkness, no longer separate, but moving together.
For the first time, Samuel didn't fight alone.
The devils hesitated.
Confused.
What they were seeing… shouldn't exist.
Light and darkness were enemies.
They destroyed each other.
But this
This was something else.
The leader's expression darkened.
"This is unnatural."
"No," Victoria said, her voice steady. "This is balance."
Samuel stepped forward, his power rising not in rage, but in control.
"She stays," he said firmly.
"And so do I."
The ground stilled.
The wind softened.
For a moment, everything paused.
The devils looked at one another, uncertain.
Their king… had changed.
And somehow
He was stronger for it.
The leader lowered his hand slowly.
"This isn't over," he warned.
Then, one by one, the shadows began to fade.
Until they were gone.
Silence returned to the forest.
But it wasn't the same silence as before.
This one felt… alive.
Victoria lowered her hands, her light dimming slightly.
Samuel turned to her.
"Are you hurt?"
She shook her head.
"No. Are you?"
He didn't answer.
Instead
He pulled her into a tight embrace.
For a moment, Victoria was surprised.
Then she smiled softly, resting her head against him.
"I thought I was going to lose you," he admitted quietly.
"You won't," she whispered. "Not if we keep choosing each other."
Samuel closed his eyes.
For the first time, he understood something powerful
Love was not weakness.
It was strength.
And though the war had only just begun
They had already changed the rules.
