Chapter 154 - Bonus Chapter B4 : The Century of Ash

Bonus Chapter B4

The Century of Ash

Various locations. Various times. Centuries of hunger.

---

I. The Desert — 1200 BCE

The sun was merciless.

Katerina walked through the sand, her feet bare, her skin cracked, her lips bleeding. The hunger was quiet—too quiet. It had been weeks since she had fed. Weeks since she had felt anything except the ache of emptiness.

"Feed," the hunger whispered.

"There's no one here."

"Then find someone. Walk. Hunt."

She walked.

Days turned into weeks. Weeks turned into months. The desert gave way to mountains. Mountains gave way to forests. Forests gave way to villages.

And then she found him.

A shepherd, young and alone, watching his flock.

"Are you lost?" he asked.

"Yes."

"Where are you going?"

"Nowhere. Everywhere. I don't know anymore."

"You can stay with me tonight. I have food. I have water. I have warmth."

She stayed.

She fed.

She left him hollow.

And the hunger grew.

---

II. The City — 800 BCE

The city was vast.

Stone walls. Iron gates. Thousands of people, pressed together in narrow streets and crowded markets. Katerina walked among them, her hood pulled low, her scars hidden beneath a cloak.

"Feed," the hunger whispered.

"Not here. Too many witnesses."

"The hunger does not care. The hunger takes."

She found a woman in the marketplace.

Young, beautiful, alone.

"Can I help you?" the woman asked.

"Yes. I'm looking for someone. A goddess. She's been alive for centuries. She feeds on hunger."

"I don't know anyone like that."

"No. I don't suppose you do."

Katerina touched her face.

The woman's eyes widened.

"What are you doing?"

"I'm sorry."

She fed.

The woman collapsed.

Katerina walked away.

The hunger was quiet—for now.

---

III. The Ship — 400 BCE

The sea was rough.

Katerina stood at the bow, her hands gripping the rail, her eyes fixed on the horizon. The hunger was restless—gnawing at her insides, whispering in her ear.

"Feed," it whispered.

"Not yet. We're almost there."

"Where?"

"To her. To Lilith. To the goddess."

"How do you know?"

"I can feel her. The hunger knows. The hunger always knows where to feed."

The ship crested a wave.

A sailor approached her.

"Are you alright, miss? You've been standing there for hours."

"I'm fine."

"You don't look fine. You look hungry."

She looked at him.

The hunger stirred.

"Feed," it whispered.

"No."

"Yes."

"I can't."

"You can. You will. You must."

She fed.

He fell.

She walked away.

And the ship sailed on.

---

IV. The Temple — 200 BCE

The temple was old.

Older than the hills. Older than the trees. Older than the memory of the people who had built it.

Katerina stood at the entrance, her hand on the stone, her heart pounding.

"She's here," the hunger whispered. "I can feel her. Lilith. The goddess. The hunger."

"What do I do?"

"You destroy her. You feed on her. You take her power. You become free."

Katerina stepped inside.

The temple was dark.

The torches flickered with lightless flames.

And on the throne, a woman sat.

Young. Beautiful. Hungry.

"Who are you?" Lilith asked.

"I am Katerina. I am the hunter. I am the one who will destroy you."

Lilith laughed.

"You cannot destroy me, little hunter. I have been alive for ten thousand years. I have survived empires. Plagues. Inquisitions. You do not frighten me."

"I'm not trying to frighten you. I'm trying to kill you."

"Then try."

Katerina lunged.

Lilith did not move.

Katerina's blade passed through her like smoke.

"What—"

"I am not flesh, little hunter. I am hunger. I am need. I am the thing that will never be satisfied. You cannot kill me with a blade."

"Then how?"

"You can't. No one can. I am eternal."

Katerina fell to her knees.

"Then why am I here? Why have I spent centuries hunting you? Why have I fed on so many?"

"Because you are hungry. Because you are scared. Because you are alone. And I am the only one who understands."

"I don't want to understand. I want to destroy."

"Then destroy yourself. Or join me. Or walk away. The choice is yours."

Katerina looked at her.

At the ancient eyes. The crimson lips. The hunger.

"I can't destroy myself. I have a daughter. She's still alive. The priests have her. They said they would return her if I killed you."

"The priests lied."

"I know."

"Then why are you still hunting?"

"Because it's all I have left."

Lilith was quiet for a long moment.

"Stay," she said. "Stay with me. Serve me. Feed with me. And I will help you find your daughter."

"Why would you help me?"

"Because I was once where you are. Hungry. Scared. Alone. And someone helped me. Someone showed me that hunger is not a curse. It's a gift. A terrible, beautiful, dangerous gift. But a gift nonetheless."

"I don't want a gift. I want my daughter."

"Then stay. And we will find her. Together."

Katerina stayed.

And the hunger grew.

---

V. The Centuries — A Fragmented Montage

She served Lilith for centuries.

She fed on thousands. She forgot her daughter's face. She forgot her daughter's name. She forgot her daughter's love.

The hunger became her only companion.

The hunt became her only purpose.

The emptiness became her only home.

"Katerina."

Lilith's voice.

"Yes?"

"You've been quiet. What are you thinking about?"

"My daughter. I think. I can't remember her face anymore."

"That's good. Memory is pain. Let it go."

"What if I don't want to?"

"Then suffer. The choice is yours."

Katerina suffered.

And the centuries passed.

---

VI. The End — The Garden

She was old now.

Her hair was white. Her hands were gnarled. Her eyes were dim.

The hunger was quiet—sleeping, dreaming, remembering.

"Katerina."

She looked up.

Lilith stood at the edge of the garden.

"It's time."

"Time for what?"

"Time to let go. Time to rest. Time to die."

"I'm scared."

"Good. Fear means you're alive."

"Will I see her? My daughter? Sofia?"

"I don't know. But I like to think so."

"I love you, Lilith."

"I know."

"Say it back."

"I love you, Katerina. I love you. I love you. I love you."

"Again."

"I love you."

"Again."

Katerina kissed her cheek.

"I love you too."

She closed her eyes.

And the hunger was quiet.
