Chapter 160 - Bonus Chapter B10 : The First Circle

Bonus Chapter B10

The First Circle

Somewhere in the desert. Two thousand years after the hunger was carved. Night.

Katerina had been hunting for centuries.

She had fed on thousands. She had crossed continents, survived wars, watched empires rise and fall. But she was tired. Tired of the hunger. Tired of the hunt. Tired of being alone.

"I want to try something different," she said.

The hunger stirred.

"Different how?"

"I want to feed without taking. I want to give instead of consume. I want to heal."

"The hunger does not heal. The hunger takes."

"Then I will teach it something new."

"The hunger cannot be taught. The hunger only grows."

"Then I will change."

The hunger was quiet.

Katerina walked into the desert.

---

The village - The same night.

The village was small.

Huts of mud and straw. Fields of wheat and barley. A temple at the center-not for Lilith, not for the hunger, but for the old gods, the ones who had grown silent over the centuries.

Katerina knelt at the altar.

"I want to help," she said. "I want to heal. I want to give."

The old gods did not answer.

They never answered.

But something else did.

A woman. Young. Dark hair. Dark eyes. A face that was beautiful in the way a question is beautiful.

"Who are you?" Katerina asked.

"My name is Mira. I'm a healer. Like you used to be."

"I'm not a healer anymore. I'm a hunter."

"You were a healer first. The hunger came after. But the healer is still there. Buried. Waiting. Remembering."

"How do you know?"

"Because I can see it in your hands. They want to touch. They want to help. They want to love."

Katerina looked at her hands.

The scars were still there. The symbols. The marks of the Inquisition.

But beneath them, something else.

"Can you teach me?" Katerina asked.

"Teach you what?"

"How to heal without hurting. How to feed without consuming. How to love without destroying."

"I don't know if I can. But I can try. And trying is enough."

---

The circle - The same night.

Mira gathered the villagers.

A circle. Hands held. Eyes closed.

"Close your eyes," Mira said.

They closed them.

"Breathe."

They breathed.

"Feel the hunger. Not the hunger of the body-the hunger of the soul. The need for connection. The need for love. The need for something."

They felt it.

"Now imagine that hunger as a color."

"Red," one said.

"Blue," another said.

"Gold," a third said.

"Good. Now imagine that color spreading through your body. From your chest to your arms. From your arms to your hands. From your hands to your fingers."

They imagined it.

"Now reach out. Feel the energy in the circle. The energy from all of us. From the people who love you."

They reached out.

They felt it.

Warm. Bright. Giving.

"Now pull that energy into you. Not taking. Receiving. Let it fill the places where the hunger lives."

They pulled.

The energy flowed into them-warm and golden and life-giving.

The hunger quieted.

Not gone. But softer.

"How do you feel?" Mira asked.

"Full," one said.

"Peaceful," another said.

"Hopeful," a third said.

"Good. That's how it's supposed to feel."

---

Katerina - The same time.

Katerina stood at the edge of the circle.

She had not participated. She had only watched.

"Why didn't you join us?" Mira asked.

"Because I'm afraid. Because if I let myself feel, I might never stop. Because I might consume them."

"The hunger is not a curse, Katerina. It's a gift. A terrible, beautiful, dangerous gift. But a gift nonetheless."

"What if I hurt them?"

"What if you don't?"

"I don't know how to give."

"Then learn. One day at a time. One choice at a time. One act of love at a time."

Katerina stepped into the circle.

Took Mira's hand.

Closed her eyes.

"Breathe," Mira said.

She breathed.

"Feel the hunger."

She felt it.

"Now imagine it as a color."

"Black. It's black."

"Good. Now imagine that black spreading through your body. From your chest to your arms. From your arms to your hands. From your hands to your fingers."

She imagined it.

"Now push that black into the circle. Not taking. Giving. Let us carry it for a while."

Katerina pushed.

The black flowed into the circle.

The villagers felt it-grief, guilt, hunger. But they did not falter. They held it together. They transformed it.

And then they pushed it into the earth.

The ground glowed.

The flowers bloomed.

The hunger quieted.

"How do you feel?" Mira asked.

"Different."

"Different how?"

"Different because I'm not hungry anymore. Different because I'm full. Different because I think I can actually do this."

"That's growth."

"It's terrifying."

"Good. Fear means you're alive."

---

The garden - The next morning.

Katerina walked among the flowers.

Mira walked beside her.

"I've never felt like this before," Katerina said.

"Like what?"

"Like I have a choice. Like I can be something other than the hunger. Like I can change."

"You always had a choice. You just forgot."

"What if I forget again?"

"Then I'll remind you. That's what circles are for."

"Will you stay?"

"For as long as you need me."

"What if I need you forever?"

"Then I'll stay forever."

Katerina wept.

Mira held her.

And for the first time in centuries, the hunger was quiet.

---

The legacy - The same day.

Katerina planted a seed.

Small. Dark. Glowing.

"What is that?" Mira asked.

"A seed. From the circle. From the energy we shared. From the hope."

"What will grow?"

"I don't know. But I think it will be something beautiful."

She watered the seed.

She covered it with soil.

She waited.

And the garden began.
