Bonus Chapter B13
David's Last Days
The original country house. Forty years after Lilith's death. Autumn.
David was old now.
His hair was white. His hands were gnarled. His eyes were dim. He had outlived his wife by four decades-four decades of tending the garden, of watching the silver flowers grow, of remembering.
"Grandpa David, are you okay?"
Katerina-the youngest, now a woman of thirty-knelt beside his chair. Her hand was on his. Her eyes were worried.
"I'm fine, little one. Just... tired."
"Tired of what?"
"Tired of waiting. Tired of remembering. Tired of being alone."
"You're not alone. You have us. You have the garden. You have the flower."
"I know. But I miss her. Lilith. I miss her voice. Her touch. Her hunger."
"She's still here. In the garden. In the flowers. In us. She's everywhere we look, if we remember to see."
"That's beautiful."
"It's true."
David closed his eyes.
And dreamed of her.
---
The dream - The garden.
He was young again.
His hands were steady. His eyes were bright. His heart was full.
Lilith stood among the flowers, her white hair loose around her shoulders, her amber eyes soft.
"David."
"Lilith. I've missed you."
"I know."
"Why did you leave?"
"I didn't leave. I just... went ahead. I've been waiting for you."
"I'm tired of waiting."
"You don't have to wait much longer."
"What do you mean?"
"Come. Walk with me."
They walked among the flowers.
The roses were blooming. The lavender was fragrant. The honeysuckle was climbing the trellis. And the silver flowers glowed around them, their golden hearts pulsing softly.
"I love you," he said.
"I know."
"Say it back."
"I love you, David. I love you. I love you. I love you."
"Again."
"I love you."
"Again."
She kissed him.
"I love you too."
---
The waking - The same night.
David opened his eyes.
Katerina was still beside him, her hand in his.
"How long was I asleep?"
"A few hours. You were smiling. Were you dreaming of her?"
"Yes."
"What did she say?"
"She said she's been waiting for me. She said I don't have to wait much longer."
"Are you scared?"
"No."
"Why not?"
"Because I'm tired. Because I'm ready. Because I want to see her again."
"We'll miss you."
"I'll miss you too. But I'll be watching. From the garden. From the flowers. From the memory."
"I love you, Grandpa David."
"I love you too, little one."
---
The garden - The next morning.
David sat in his chair.
The silver flowers glowed around him, their golden hearts pulsing softly. Katerina knelt beside him. Kat stood behind her. Jonah stood beside Kat.
"It's time," David said.
"Time for what?" Katerina asked.
"Time to let go. Time to rest. Time to go home."
"Where is home?"
"Wherever she is. Wherever the garden is. Wherever the flower is."
He closed his eyes.
His breath slowed.
His heart stopped.
"He's gone," Kat whispered.
"No," Katerina said. "He's not gone. He's with her. In the garden. In the flowers. In us. He's everywhere we look, if we remember to see."
"That's beautiful."
"It's true."
Katerina knelt beside the oldest silver flower-the one Lilith had planted, the one that had started everything.
"I love you, Grandpa David. I never said it enough. I love you. I love you. I love you."
The wind blew.
The flower swayed.
And for a moment-just a moment-Katerina could have sworn she saw two figures standing among the roses.
One old, with white hair and shaking hands.
One young, with amber eyes and a gentle smile.
"You're doing well, little one," they whispered together.
And then they were gone.
---
The porch - Night.
Kat sat on the porch swing.
Jonah sat beside her.
The stars were bright. The moon was full. The world was quiet.
"How do you feel?" he asked.
"Different."
"Different how?"
"Different because I'm not scared anymore. Different because I trust him. Different because I trust myself. Different because I think he's finally home."
"That's growth."
"It's terrifying."
"Good. Fear means you're alive."
She leaned into him.
He put his arm around her.
"I love you," she said.
"I know."
"Say it back."
"I love you, Kat. I love you. I love you. I love you."
"Again."
"I love you."
"Again."
She kissed him.
"I love you too."
The stars shone.
The moon glowed.
And Kat-the daughter of former servants, the granddaughter of a former goddess, the mother of a new generation-sat on the porch swing, held by the man she loved, and felt something she had never felt before.
Peace.
