"They stop talking when I come in," I said.
Nadia didn't look up from the dough she was working. "Some of them."
"No, actually, all of them. This morning I walked into the laundry room, and three people found somewhere else to be inside of ten seconds. I've never seen anyone move that fast toward…nowhere."
"That's Marta and the Nesbitt girls. They'd gossip about the rocks if it did anything interesting." She turned the dough over and pressed the heel of her hand into it. "Don't give them the satisfaction of noticing."
"Well, I noticed. Pretty much everything. And that's the trouble with noticing; you can't un-notice it after."
I sat down at the kitchen table because my legs were tired of holding me upright in rooms where people wouldn't look at me.
Nadia kept working. The oven was on, and the whole place smelled like bread, which was the one thing in the house that hadn't changed since the night Rhys came home from Eldermarch and everything blew up.
