The week passed without drama.
It rained twice, heavily, the kind of Gotham rain that came in sideways and had opinions about windows. The remaining days sat under low overcast that blocked enough sun to keep everything damp — laundry took three days and still smelled wrong, the streets had a particular grey flatness, and the light that made it through the cloud cover had been diluted past usefulness.
Will developed a suspicion that visible sunlight might be structurally prohibited in this city.
Maroni was quieter than expected.
Charlie had been gone for eight days. No communication from Maroni's side, no withdrawn assignments, no reduction in the weekly operating allowance. Business continued in the established pattern: the casino posted normal numbers, the distribution channels ran at their usual capacity, the street-level collection schedule held without modification.
Either Maroni hadn't noticed.
Or Maroni had noticed and was doing something more patient than noticing.
Will preferred to assume the second option and act accordingly. The blank comic was still blank. Whatever was coming hadn't resolved its timeline yet.
Gordon called on Thursday morning.
"Your friend hasn't slept since he arrived," Gordon said, with the voice of a man who also hadn't slept since someone arrived. "He's been running on press conference energy and caffeine and whatever it is that drives people who are absolutely certain they're right."
"Fifty-six indictments," Will said. He'd seen the numbers in the paper.
"In seven days. Yes." A pause. "Police, municipal administration, three city council members, a port authority official, and Loeb."
"Congratulations on your forthcoming promotion, Commissioner Gordon."
A longer pause.
"I keep telling you, I'm a detective sergeant—" Gordon stopped. "You know, I've been doing the arithmetic."
"And?"
"It works out. Which is annoying."
Will ended the call and looked at the kitchen window, where the overcast was doing its usual work. A man who had spent three weeks reading a city's power structure could see the shape of it: Loeb gone, the department reorganized around whoever was left with both seniority and clean hands, which in the Gotham PD was a population of approximately one.
The problem was that Maroni wasn't adjusting.
Every criminal organization that had ever been successfully prosecuted had made the mistake of continuing to operate normally while the legal pressure mounted, right up until the moment it couldn't. Maroni's continued normalcy wasn't a sign of confidence. It was a sign that he had a variable Will hadn't accounted for.
He didn't like variables he couldn't name.
Oswald was eating oatmeal from a bowl and had committed the error of pouring expired milk over it. He ate it anyway, with the resigned expression of a man who had grown up making do.
"You think Maroni's scared?" he asked, not looking up.
"Not scared," Will said. He was working on eggs in the pan — butter already browned, heat right, the yolk going to stay intact if he was careful. "Waiting. He's the kind of person who waits until the moment is specific."
"Waiting for what?"
"I don't know. Don't ask me things I don't know."
He had half a sentence he didn't say out loud: but the comic is still blank, which means he hasn't found the moment yet. He'd become accustomed to treating the comic as a background instrument — not a guide, not a map, but a weather system that he'd learned to read.
Blank was a warning. Not blank was information.
He flipped the egg clean and dropped it into Oswald's bowl.
"Eat that instead."
"I was eating this—"
"You were grimacing at that. There's a difference."
Oswald touched the egg with two fingers and then held those two fingers under cold water for thirty seconds while making sounds of genuine personal offense.
"Is there anything happening this week?" Will asked, when the noise had subsided.
"Actually—" Oswald dried his hand, slowly. "There's a circus that set up near the East Side. Just came in. I need to collect on the venue."
Will set down the pan.
Circus. East Side. Just arrived.
The phrase Flying Graysons arranged itself in his memory before he'd consciously reached for it, surfacing from the accumulated reference library of a person who had spent years consuming the mythology of this city in the form of serialized fiction.
Dick Grayson, first Robin. Son of John and Mary Grayson, the Flying Graysons, the most celebrated acrobat family in the American circus circuit. A child who watched his parents fall during a sabotaged performance and was taken in by the one man who understood that particular shape of loss.
He tried to recall more specific detail about Dick's personality. What came to mind first, embarrassingly and without effort, was the name itself.
He pushed past that.
Compared to the second Robin — Jason Todd, all fury and direct honesty — Dick had always seemed, in the panels, like an extension of Batman's shadow. The loyal one. The competent one. The one whose emotional complexity was understated precisely because the narrative kept cutting away to more volatile characters.
But understated emotional complexity described a real person's interiority, not a narrative convenience. And Will's current working model of Gotham was that the real people here were entirely real, which meant the Grayson who existed in this city was a complete human being rather than a sidekick-shaped gap in the story.
More practically: someone with plot-tested survival instincts and provably exceptional physical ability, available for recruitment at the ground level, before any other major faction had found them.
He went to his room to change.
The second comic was in the inner pocket of his jacket.
He'd already checked twice. The original blank comic was still on the nightstand exactly where he'd left it. This was a different one — thinner, the cover creased from what looked like a previous reading, a green-suited figure in a domino mask on the front.
He sat on the edge of the bed and leafed through it.
The story was brief and deliberately incomplete, the kind of summary that provided orientation without being a script: a circus in a deteriorating Gotham venue, a protection debt, a sabotaged wire during the high-wire act, two bodies on the ground, a child with nothing left to lose. A confrontation with a crime figure. A hand extended.
In this version: no dark knight waiting in the wings to extend the hand instead.
In this version, the crime figure collecting the debt is going to be Oswald.
Will sat with that for a moment.
The comic's mechanics had clarified considerably across twenty-six chapters. A blank comic was a warning about a decision point with lethal stakes. A new comic with content was a side-arc briefing — information provided in advance, presumably because the node required foreknowledge to navigate correctly.
Two comics active simultaneously was new.
He put both in his inside pocket, one per side.
So the main arc is still in danger, and now I have a side quest running concurrently.
He put his jacket on and went back to the kitchen.
"I'll come with you," he said.
They took the Mustang east.
The Fiorenza Cathedral had been significant once — century-old Gothic stonework, spire visible from the old waterfront, the kind of building that appeared on illustrated maps of Gotham from before the economic center had drifted north. The fire that had taken it in the 1960s had left the bones: the façade intact but hollow, the spire's upper third collapsed into the nave, the stone cross broken at the horizontal bar and never replaced.
In the decades since, the East Side had continued its migration away from itself. The blocks around the cathedral had gone residential, then commercial, then neither, in the specific economic sequence that produced neighborhoods that were neither poor enough to be addressed nor functional enough to sustain themselves. The cathedral grounds — a footprint of several acres — had become what abandoned footprints became: a place where things were stored, parked, temporarily arranged.
Currently: a large red tent that had been a brighter shade of red before weather and travel had worked on it. Guide ropes staked into the dirt. A hand-painted banner reading THE FLYING GRAYSONS AND FAMILY in Circus-standard lettering, the paint newer than the canvas.
Several children were examining the Mustang when they arrived. Oswald dispersed them with the economy of a man who had dispensed with patience for this particular category of obstacle.
Inside the tent: ropes being strung between supports, two people up ladders on opposite ends of the space, two younger figures on the ground providing stabilization. The family resemblance was visible at thirty feet — same coloring, same physical proportion, the structured posture of people whose profession lived in their bodies.
One of the ground-level figures — early teens, dark-haired, watching the tent entrance with the specific alertness of someone who'd learned to track who came through doors — spotted them first.
The man on the nearer ladder came down.
"Performances start this evening if you're—" He stopped. Registered the suits. His expression went through a fast recalculation. "We're not open yet."
"Ha!" Oswald was already grinning. "The Flying Graysons! I've been looking for you. Venue fee: fifty per week. Per-head fee: ten per person. You want to pay now, or do we do this the way we did it in Garfield?"
He worked the knuckleduster onto his right hand while he spoke — practiced, casual, the motion of a man who had done this many times and preferred to have it visible before the conversation required it.
Both of the younger figures backed up. The woman on the far ladder had stopped climbing.
John Grayson stepped forward, putting himself between Oswald and the rest of them.
"Sir." He had the voice of someone who had been diffusing situations for a long time and kept the skill current. "We arrived yesterday. I can show you the transit logs if it helps establish our timeline. We don't have operating revenue yet — we're still setting up. If you can give us until next Friday—"
"Next Thursday you'll be in another city." Oswald cracked his knuckles through the duster. "Same story, different week. I remember how the Graysons handle debt, old man."
"We had an extraordinary circumstance last time—"
"You had my face used as a punching bag for eleven hours. That was extraordinary."
Will put his hand on Oswald's shoulder.
"Give me a minute."
Oswald looked at him.
"He's going to give you the same speech."
"Probably," Will said. "Let me hear it anyway."
