Chapter 23 - CHAPTER 23

Realizing that certain developments were slipping beyond his direct awareness, Muzan Kibutsuji paused for the first time in quiet unease.

However, he did not act recklessly. Nor did he invade the consciousness of Kokushibo.

Unlike the other Upper Moons, Kokushibo was different. He was not merely a subordinate he was the foundation of Muzan's order, the only demon he regarded as irreplaceable.

Even Muzan understood that disturbing him carelessly could destabilize everything.

Instead, he issued a command.

"The Twelve Kizuki… assemble."

A meeting.

It was a structure inspired indirectly by the Demon Slayer Corps itself an imitation of organization and hierarchy meant to instill fear and unity among demons.

Yet Muzan never acknowledged the irony: no matter how much he imitated humanity's structure, he lacked their cohesion.

His subordinates obeyed out of fear, not trust.

And Kokushibo had often criticized this system in silence.

"Empty theatrics," he once thought. "They call it control, but it is only intimidation dressed as authority."

He had even reflected before on the failures of the Twelve Kizuki across time.

Lower Moons slaughtered by Demon Slayers without resistance. Upper Moons falling one by one in isolated battles. Internal betrayal, instability, and meaningless deaths.

A structure that should have been absolute… constantly collapsing under pressure.

And yet here they were again.

Gathered in the shifting halls of the Infinity Castle under the command of Nakime.

The Upper Moons were given their individual chambers, while the Lower Moons were forced together in a single space, kneeling in fear.

Power dictated space. Fear dictated silence.

The moment Kokushibo arrived, the atmosphere shifted.

Doma immediately approached him with his usual cheerful energy.

"Kokushibo-sama! It's been so long!"

"...We met yesterday," Kokushibo replied flatly, pushing him away without hesitation.

Doma, unfazed, turned his attention toward Akaza instead, reaching out with familiar enthusiasm.

Before he could even make contact

CRACK.

Akaza's fist exploded forward and shattered half of Doma's face.

"Don't touch me," Akaza said coldly. "Disgusting."

The two had always been incompatible.

Akaza pursued strength and discipline. Doma moved through emptiness and indulgence. Their philosophies clashed at every point of contact.

Kokushibo watched silently from above.

He already knew Muzan was observing from the shadows of the castle. She had not yet revealed herself, but her presence was unmistakable.

As expected, the Lower Moons trembled as tension escalated.

Doma's injury provoked immediate hostility from Gyutaro and Daki.

They were deeply loyal to Doma, who had once elevated them into demonhood. Any disrespect toward him was unacceptable.

Gyutaro's sickles tightened. Daki's obi ribbons shifted in agitation.

But before they could act

Kokushibo moved.

In a single blur of motion, his blade flashed.

Akaza's arm was severed instantly.

The strike was so clean that even Akaza, one of the most battle-hardened Upper Moons, failed to react in time.

Kokushibo appeared behind him without turning.

"Akaza," he said coldly. "You are Upper Moon Three. Know your place."

The pressure in his voice was absolute.

"If you are dissatisfied, challenge me through a Blood Demon Art duel. If not… apologize."

Akaza swallowed his pride.

Even he understood the gap between them.

"…I'm sorry," he said.

Doma waved it off casually, already regenerating. "It's fine! We're all friends here!"

Kokushibo then turned his gaze toward Gyutaro and Daki.

In an instant, he was before them.

Gyutaro instinctively stepped in front of his sister.

"Lord Kokushibo… please "

He did not finish.

Another strike.

His arm fell.

Daki screamed, but Kokushibo's expression did not change.

"If you have grievances, you may challenge me," he said calmly. "Otherwise, obey."

Gyutaro, understanding the hierarchy instantly, lowered his head.

"We… apologize, Lord Akaza. We were mistaken."

Akaza did not respond. He simply looked away.

The Lower Moons watched in absolute silence, unable to even breathe properly.

This was the difference between existence and irrelevance.

Once order was restored, Kokushibo returned to his position.

"Remember this," he said. "Obedience is the foundation of survival. Anyone who challenges it will face me."

All demons bowed.

"We understand, Lord Kokushibo."

Then, without warning, Kokushibo lowered himself into a kneel.

"Lord Muzan… please appear."

A ripple passed through the castle.

Even the Upper Moons stiffened.

And then she arrived.

Muzan Kibutsuji emerged in an elegant kimono, her presence overwhelming yet refined.

The Upper Moons instinctively averted their gaze.

Even Kokushibo, despite his strength, felt the weight of her authority.

Muzan's eyes swept over them slowly.

"Good," she said softly. "As expected… Kokushibo, my trust in you was not misplaced."

Then her expression hardened.

"Kneel."

Her voice deepened carrying both masculine authority and terrifying dominance.

Every demon obeyed instantly.

The Lower Moons trembled violently. Some could not even lift their heads.

Among them, Enmu looked up with an unsettling smile.

"…How beautiful," he whispered. "If I could be killed by you…"

Muzan ignored him.

Instead, she focused on the Lower Moons with quiet disdain.

"Useless."

A single word.

Some vanished moments later.

The room grew emptier.

Kokushibo observed silently. This was the usual cycle purge, replacement, and fear.

After the assembly concluded, Muzan dismissed everyone.

But she raised a hand.

"Kokushibo. Stay."

The others left without hesitation.

No one dared question it.

Once the hall was empty, Muzan's gaze sharpened.

"I heard something interesting," she said slowly. "You have taken in a new demon."

Her eyes glowed faint red in the dim light.

Kokushibo remained still.

"…Yes," he answered.

The air in the Infinity Castle shifted.

And for the first time in a long while, even Kokushibo felt that something unseen had begun to move.
