Chapter 7: The Mark
The corridor's light steadied, as if nothing had happened, as if the shadow at the far end hadn't just stirred. Emily froze, breath lodged in her throat, fingers tightening around her phone.
Then it moved. Not a trick of light, not her imagination. It stretched..reached…like it knew she was there, like it was watching her.
"Emily?" Her mother's voice drifted softly from the living room. Calm, Controlled, Unnervingly close.
Emily blinked, forcing air back into her lungs. The shadow lay flat again…harmless, obedient to the light, as though it hadn't defied her seconds before.
"I'm going to my room" she called, voice steadier than she felt.
A brief pause "Don't stay up too late." Ordinary words, but the tone lingered…watchful, calculating.
Emily didn't answer. She turned and walked down the hallway, each step deliberate ..not out of fear of noise, but uncertainty over what might answer it. The air seemed taut, as if the house itself held its breath.
At her door, she paused, fingers hovering over the handle. In that instant she sensed it again not outside, not behind her, but with her. She pushed the door open, slipped inside, and closed it softly. Pressing her back against it, she exhaled in a shaky rush.
Suddenly, everything surged in…the gala, the rejection, the shadows, him, the messages, her mother's tone.
"I can't do this…" she whispered.
Still, something inside her shifted not breaking, not collapsing, but waking.
Her phone buzzed. She flinched, then checked the screen.
Lena: Tell me you saw that too.
Emily stared at the message, thumb poised. Finally she typed..
Emily: Saw what?
Almost immediately.
Lena: Don't play dumb. The shadow in your hall, I felt it from outside.
Emily's breath hitched. She typed.
Emily: You're not here anymore.
A pause, then.
Lena: I know, That's why I'm scared.
The words pressed in on her, fear, yes, but also distance. Something was changing between them, and Emily felt powerless to stop it.
A sudden pain shot through her wrist. Emily gasped, her phone clattering to the floor as she grabbed her arm. The ache burned deep, like something carving itself beneath her skin. She stumbled to her desk, pulse pounding, feeding the pain.
"No… no, no…" Her fingers shook as she rolled up her sleeve. And then she froze.
A dark, delicate mark had appeared along her wrist, pulsating once with a slow, living throb.
Emily's breath caught. "What is that…"
She felt it shift…..no visible movement, but undeniable motion beneath her skin. A memory exploded in her mind. seven-year-old Emily alone in her dark room, shadows heavy and close, not emptiness but presence. "Mom?" she'd called then, answered only by silence and a sense of being watched.
Snapping back, she shook her head. "No… that's not real…"
But the mark throbbed stronger, and the shadows in her room began to stir, inching toward her with deliberate slowness. A cold dread crept up her spine.
"You're noticing it faster now."
Emily spun. He stood by the window, motionless, like he'd always been there. Her heart slammed.
"How did you..?"
"You left it open" he said quietly.
Emily's gaze darted to the window. Closed, Locked. Her stomach dropped. "That's not possible."
He looked at her wrist. "…It manifested sooner than expected."
She recoiled. "What is this?"
He took a measured step forward. "You tell me."
Her jaw clenched. "I don't know what it is. That's why I'm asking you."
He paused. "It's a sign."
Emily drew a shaky breath. "A sign of what?"
His dark eyes met hers. "Of what you've become."
Silence pressed in, She shook her head. "I haven't become anything."
His gaze flicked to the shadows gathering at her feet, then back to her. "You're still trying to separate yourself from it."
Her chest tightened "Because it's not me."
"That's where you're wrong."
The words hit deeper than she expected. Emily's fingers curled into a fist. "Then explain it," she whispered "Explain anything."
He watched her long enough to make her uneasy. Then, "Your power isn't new. It was always there."
Her breath caught, "Then why now?"
"Because something triggered it…rejection, humiliation, anger."
Her stomach twisted. "Why me?"
He didn't answer immediately. Finally, "That's the part you're not ready for."
Frustration flared. "So you'll just keep giving half answers and warnings?"
A flicker of interest passed in his eyes. "If I told you everything, you wouldn't believe it."
"Try me."
He shook his head "Not yet."
Emily spun away "This is insane."
"Maybe" he admitted softly, "but it's real."
Silence fell, she met his gaze. "What happens now?"
He said,"You learn."
"Learn what?"
"How to control it."
Images of Lena recoiling in fear flashed in her mind, and her chest tightened. "And if I can't?"
His eyes darkened. "…Then next time…"
She finished the thought herself. "…You won't stop it."
Her own words echoed in the cold. "And the people around me?"
Another pause. "They won't survive."
The weight of that crushed her. "I don't want this."
"I know."
For a heartbeat, something softened in his expression. Then he added, "But that doesn't matter."
Silence reclaimed the room. Emily found her voice "Why are you helping me?"
His gaze held hers. "Because if I don't, someone worse will."
A chill deepened "And they won't ask."
She swallowed. "And you?"
He offered a faint shrug. "I don't ask either."
His honesty startled her. Then the mark pulsed violently, Emily cried out as shadows surged faster, stronger, erupting around her. Lights flickered, the air twisted, darkness swelled…
"I didn't…!"
"I know" He was beside her in an instant, gripping her wrist. At his touch, everything snapped into stillness…silence, stasis.
Emily's breath came in ragged bursts, her heart thundered. He was too close. She whispered, "…You felt that."
"Yes" He met her eyes. "It's getting stronger."
"And next time…"
He released her slowly "…I might not be enough."
His words lingered, frosty and unavoidable. Emily stared at the expanding mark, now darker and wider than before. This time, it did not fade.
