Chapter 70 - Chapter 70 Buddies

A massive, circular auditorium had been built into the sand dunes of the desert using Sam's magic.

It was larger than any sports stadium on Earth.

On one side of the giant arena sat the people of Earth.

There were soldiers, reporters, and normal citizens.

On the exact opposite side, taking up thousands of seats, sat Thanos's alien army.

But as the seats filled up, something very strange happened.

The lines between the two sides started to blur.

Humans and aliens ended up sitting right next to each other.

The atmosphere was incredibly awkward.

They looked at each other with wide eyes.

They did not know what to feel. Just an hour ago, they were ready to kill each other in a bloody war.

Now, they were sitting together waiting for a show to start.

They did not speak the same language.

A human man named Mike looked nervously at the massive, gray-skinned alien soldier sitting right next to him.

The alien wore heavy metal armor and carried a large laser rifle.

Mike swallowed hard. He slowly reached into his lap and held out a large bucket of caramel popcorn.

"Do you... want some?"

Mike asked nervously, pointing to the food.

The alien looked at the bucket. He did not understand the English words, but he understood the gesture.

Food was the true conversation of the soul.

The alien reached into the bucket with his thick, scaly fingers.

He picked up a handful of caramel popcorn and tossed it into his mouth.

He chewed slowly.

Suddenly, the alien's dark eyes went completely wide.

"This..."

The alien mumbled in his deep, rough voice. He pointed at the popcorn.

"More."

"You like it?"

Mike smiled, feeling a little less scared.

"It is caramel. It is mostly just sugar."

"Sugar,"

The alien repeated, grabbing another huge handful.

Mike laughed.

He reached into his cooler and pulled out a cold can of Coke and a bright pink bag of cotton candy.

He handed them to the massive soldier.

The alien took a bite of the cotton candy.

He looked completely amazed as the sweet pink cloud melted perfectly in his mouth.

Then, he cracked open the Coke and took a long drink. The sweet bubbles made him burp loudly.

"Good!"

The alien laughed, patting his heavy stomach.

"Earth food is glorious!"

It turned out, the terrifying space army had a massive sweet tooth.

All around the stadium, aliens were happily sharing candy, soda, and sweet snacks with their human neighbors. They absolutely loved sugar.

"Alright, my friend,"

Mike smiled, feeling very comfortable now.

"If you like that, try the really good stuff."

Mike reached into his cooler and pulled out an ice-cold can of beer.

He cracked it open and handed it to the alien.

The alien took a huge gulp, expecting more sweet, bubbly sugar.

*Pfft!*

The alien instantly spat the beer all over the sand. He coughed loudly, wiping his mouth with absolute disgust.

"What is this?!"

The alien groaned, looking horrified.

"It is bitter! It burns! This is literal poison!"

"It's just beer,"

Mike chuckled, taking a sip from his own can.

"It helps us Earthlings relax after a long day."

The alien stared at Mike like he had completely lost his mind. He looked around the stadium and saw thousands of humans happily drinking the same bitter poison.

"You drink poison... for fun?"

The alien asked, shaking his heavy head.

"You Earth people are completely insane. You are much too dangerous."

The alien quickly pushed the beer away and reached safely back into the bucket of caramel popcorn.

Mike just laughed and patted the giant soldier on the back.

They were from completely different worlds, and their leaders were about to fight for the universe, but in that quiet moment, they were just two guys sharing a snack and waiting for the games to begin.

The stadium felt like a massive, universal festival.

Before the fights even began, some humans had set up small shops around the edges of the seats.

The aliens were amazed. They had visited planets with technology far more advanced than Earth's.

But when it comes to simple creativity, art, and fun? Earth won by an entire galaxy away.

The alien soldiers happily traded small gold coins for shiny toys, comic books, music players, and strange human clothes.

Suddenly, a loud, booming horn echoed through the desert. The stadium grew quiet.

Two announcers walked into the center of the giant ring.

One was a human wearing a sharp suit. The other was a tall alien with bright blue skin and a booming voice.

"Welcome, people of Earth and visitors from the stars!"

The human announcer shouted into his microphone.

"Today, Earth's greatest heroes, The Avengers, will fight to protect our world!"

The human side of the crowd cheered wildly, clapping their hands and stomping their feet.

"And facing them,"

The alien announcer roared, his voice shaking the ground,

"Are the greatest, most fearsome warriors of the galaxy! The Children of Thanos!"

The alien army cheered back, banging their heavy weapons against their shields.

The human announcer raised his hand to calm the crowd. His face turned very serious.

"We must remind everyone of the ultimate prize,"

The human said.

"If the Avengers win, Thanos and his army will leave in peace forever. But... if Thanos's champions win, he will use the Infinity Stones. He will erase exactly half of all life in the universe."

A quiet, scared murmur ran through the human crowd.

The alien announcer stepped forward to explain the reason.

"The universe is too full!"

The alien announcer explained loudly.

"There is not enough food, water, or space for everyone. Our great leader, Thanos, wants to save the universe from starving. To do this, half must go, so that the other half can live in peace."

Down in the seats, people reacted differently. Some humans nodded slowly.

They did not like it, but they understood the sad, brutal math.

Many others cried, shook their heads, and hugged their loved ones tightly. They could not accept it. But they were just normal people. They could not do anything to stop it.

"But remember!"

The alien announcer boomed proudly.

"Thanos is completely fair! He does not choose who lives or dies! The erasing is random. Even half of our own army will disappear if we win. We accept this sacrifice!"

Down in the stands, Mike looked at the giant gray alien sitting next to him.

"Wait a minute,"

Mike said softly, his eyes wide.

"If your boss wins... you might disappear too?"

The alien nodded his heavy head. He looked down at his bucket of popcorn.

"Yes, human Mike,"

The alien said honestly.

"Rich or poor, strong or weak. I might even turn to dust today."

Mike felt a deep sadness in his chest. He looked at the beautiful blue sky, and then at his new alien friend. He took a deep, shaky breath. If it happened, it happened. He had to accept it.

"Listen, buddy,"

Mike said, leaning closer to the giant soldier.

"If my side loses, and I am the one who turns to dust... can you do me a really huge favor?"

"I will honor your final wish,"

The alien said proudly, sitting up straight.

"What is it?"

"Go to my house,"

Mike whispered very seriously.

"Turn on my computer... and completely erase my internet history. Delete everything. Do not look at it. Just destroy it."

The alien blinked his dark eyes in total confusion. He had absolutely no idea what an 'internet history' was, or why a brave warrior cared about a machine before dying.

"I... do not understand your strange Earth ways,"

The alien said slowly.

"But I accept your honorable quest. I will completely destroy this 'computer' machine for you."

"Thanks, man,"

Mike smiled, feeling a massive wave of relief.

"You are a real true friend."

The alien placed a heavy, armored hand on Mike's shoulder.

"And if I am the one who turns to dust,"

The alien said, his voice turning soft.

"I ask a favor of you, human Mike. You must tell my family of my glorious death. Tell them I died watching the greatest battle in the universe."

Mike looked at the scary alien, seeing the gentle heart underneath the thick metal armor.

"I have absolutely no idea what planet your family lives on,"

Mike said honestly.

"But I promise you, man. I will find a way to tell them."

The alien smiled, showing his sharp teeth.

"Thank you, Mike,"

The alien said.

They both turned their eyes back to the empty ring, ready to watch the fate of the universe unfold.

High above the massive stadium, Sam and Thanos sat together in a private, floating viewing box.

They had the best seats.

They could see the empty ring perfectly, and they could hear the loud cheers of the humans and the aliens mixing together down below.

Sam leaned back in his comfortable chair.

He held a cup of tea. Thanos sat right next to him, his heavy golden armor resting quietly on his massive frame.

They were the two most powerful beings in the universe, but right now, they just looked like two old generals waiting for a match to start.

"Your people are very strange, Sam,"

Thanos said, looking down at the crowd.

"They are sharing their food with my soldiers. They are laughing together. They do not seem to hate their enemy."

"They don't want to be enemies,"

Sam smiled, taking a sip of water.

"Normal people just want to live their lives, Thanos. They want to eat good food, raise their families, and be happy. Wars are usually started by kings and leaders, not by the people sitting in the stands."

Thanos let out a low, slow breath. He stared out at the bright blue Earth sky.

"I do not want this war either,"

Thanos admitted, his deep voice sounding incredibly tired.

"I take absolutely no pleasure in erasing life. I am not a monster who enjoys the killing. I only do it because it is the only way to save them. The universe is a beautiful garden, Sam. But there are too many flowers, and not enough water. If I do not pull some of the flowers, the whole garden will die."

Sam listened carefully. He did not agree with the Mad Titan, but he completely understood him.

He saw the deep, twisted sense of duty in Thanos's eyes.

"I see your point,"

Sam nodded respectfully.

"You look at the universe like a farmer. You are trying to manage your crops. But Thanos... you are missing the biggest piece of the puzzle."

Thanos slowly turned his head to look at the human.

"What am I missing?"

Thanos asked.

"You are looking at the universe like a box that can never change,"

Sam explained, his voice calm and full of wisdom.

"You think the resources are completely fixed. You think the only way to fix the math is to subtract. You want to use the Infinity Stones to destroy."

Sam pointed a finger down toward the empty arena.

"But you don't have to subtract,"

Sam said firmly.

"Why not add? Why not expand?"

Thanos frowned, his thick brow furrowing in confusion.

"Expand?"

"Yes,"

Sam smiled.

"The Infinity Stones do not just have the power to erase life. They have the absolute power to create. If the universe is running out of food, water, and space... why don't you just use the stones to make the universe bigger? Make it two times bigger. Three times. A hundred times bigger. Create brand new, empty planets. Create endless, fresh resources. Make the garden so massive that the flowers never run out of water."

Thanos completely froze. His eyes widened slightly.

He stared blankly at the wall. For hundreds of years, his mind had been entirely focused on the sad, cruel math of his destiny.

He had spent his entire life believing that destruction was the only cure.

He had never once stopped to think about using the ultimate power to simply create more room.

If the resources were too slim... why not just expand them?

"To create..."

Thanos whispered to himself, the heavy gears in his mind turning fast.

"To simply expand the garden..."

He looked back at Sam. His eyes were completely different. The dark, heavy burden of his 'destiny' seemed to crack just a little bit.

"You have given me much to think about, Cultivator,"

Thanos rumbled slowly, feeling a very strange, new feeling in his chest. Hope.

Sam just smiled and raised his glass of water in a small toast.

"Think about it all you want,"

Sam said smoothly.

"But we still have a tournament to finish."
