Chapter 8 - CHAPTER 8: THE ASSIGNMENT SHIFT

Academy Grounds:

The next day felt normal.

Too normal.

Training resumed.

Voices returned.

Movements stabilized.

But something remained.

A gap.

Kael stood in formation again.

Same place.

Same position.

"Veyra synchronization. Begin."

Energy flared across the field.

Controlled.

Measured.

Kael raised his hand slightly.

Nothing happened.

"…Consistent," he muttered.

Observation Deck:

Above the grounds—

Marek stood watching.

"He hasn't changed," an instructor beside him said.

Marek didn't respond immediately.

"…That's not what concerns me."

"What does?"

Marek's eyes remained fixed on Kael.

"…Everything around him is changing instead."

Training Grounds:

"Stop."

The instructor raised a hand.

"All trainees selected for reassignment—step forward."

A pause.

Then movement.

Names were called again.

One by one.

"Ren Talvek."

"Lira Sen."

"Daren Vol."

Then—

"Kael Dravion."

Silence.

Short.

But noticeable.

Kael stepped forward.

"…This again?"

Briefing Area:

The selected group gathered in a smaller chamber.

More controlled.

More serious.

"This is not a standard patrol," the instructor said.

"A newly formed zone has been detected."

Murmurs spread immediately.

"New zone?"

"That's not possible…"

"Zones don't just form…"

The instructor continued.

"It was not detected yesterday."

Silence.

Focus:

Marek stepped forward.

"I'll be leading this mission."

That alone changed the atmosphere.

Explanation:

"The zone is unstable."

A projection appeared.

A map.

At the center—

A blank area.

No data.

No Veyra readings.

No classification.

"…We don't know what it is," Marek said.

Reaction:

Ren frowned.

"That's not enough information."

"It's all we have."

Kael:

Kael stared at the map.

"…That spot again."

He didn't say it out loud.

But something about it felt familiar.

Assignment:

"You move in. You observe. You retreat if necessary."

"No direct engagement unless ordered."

Tension:

"Understood?"

"…Yes."

Except Kael.

"…Sure."

Departure:

The group moved out shortly after.

No delay.

No preparation beyond standard gear.

Because there was nothing to prepare for.

Outer Zone — New Sector:

The environment changed the moment they arrived.

The air felt thinner.

Not physically.

But… structurally.

"Stay close," Marek ordered.

The group moved carefully.

Weapons ready.

Veyra active.

Kael walked in the middle.

"…It's quieter than before," he said.

No one replied.

Because he was right.

The Shift:

They reached the edge of the zone.

And stopped.

Because something was wrong.

The ground ahead—

Didn't look damaged.

Didn't look corrupted.

It looked…

Unfinished.

"…What is that?" Lira whispered.

The space ahead felt incomplete.

Like part of reality had not loaded properly.

Center Approach:

Marek raised a hand.

"No one moves forward."

Kael stared at it.

"…Yeah."

That feeling again.

Stronger this time.

Distortion:

The air flickered.

Just slightly.

Then—

A shape appeared.

Not fully.

Not clearly.

But enough.

First Manifestation:

A figure.

Distorted.

Incomplete.

Like something trying to exist—

but failing.

Reaction:

"…Contact," Ren said.

Marek's voice sharpened.

"Do not engage."

Kael:

Kael stepped forward slightly.

"…You're not supposed to be here either, right?"

The thing stopped.

For a moment—

It reacted.

End Point:

The air around it twisted.

The zone responded.

And for the first time—

The mission became something else.
