[During one meeting with your father, you bring up the invitation letter. In his eyes, you see surprise, delight, relief, guilt, and reluctance to part—an expression eerily similar to your mother's two years ago.]
[Age 13: You no longer have a home. It seems that, once your father no longer had to worry about your future, the final breath holding him together finally gave way, and his health rapidly deteriorated.]
[On a quiet night, he chose to end his own life.]
[On the table at home, you find four things: a plane ticket to the institute, the invitation letter, a bank card, and your father's final words to you.]

Four years had passed, and yet Mobius had clearly never forgotten him.
"What exactly do you need me to do?" Mo Xie asked bluntly, ignoring her teasing.
"No need to rush that. Come on, call me—" She coughed and promptly straightened herself when she saw Mo Xie turning to leave. "Your job will be to serve as my assistant."
"Assistant?" Mo Xie frowned slightly, puzzled. "With your current reputation, shouldn't all you need to do is wave a hand and have a crowd fighting to sign up?"
"Heh." Mobius let out a sneer full of unspoken contempt. "A bunch of fools. None of them can keep up with my pace. What I need is a genius."
"You know very well that I'm not a genius." Mo Xie spread his hands.
"No. You are a genius. Of that, I am absolutely certain," Mobius said with emphasis.
Her gaze was feverish, so intense that Mo Xie shifted uncomfortably.
As though realizing her stare had grown too naked, Mobius reined it in slightly. After a light cough, she said in a grave tone, "Do you know… about Honkai?"
At the word Honkai, Mo Xie's pupils contracted.
Setting aside the knowledge he had possessed "since birth," the fact that both of his parents had died from Honkai sickness was enough to make him treat Honkai with the utmost caution.
"So you do know." Mobius smiled brilliantly. "Looks like you've been hiding more than one trick up your sleeve."

[Age 14: The Second Great Eruption breaks out.]
[It erupts without warning in a densely populated area, catching humanity completely off guard.]

[The higher-ups all had their own agendas, scrambling to dispatch the forces under their command to the battlefield first, each seeking to seize the greatest share of the benefits.]
[Reality, however, dealt them a crushing blow.]
[None of the deployed forces—whether heavy combat units or tactical assassination squads—could even get close to the Herrscher.]
[Any weapon that reached her either malfunctioned or vanished without warning.]
[She did nothing at all. She simply walked forward in silence, as though inspecting territory that belonged to her. Wherever she passed, buildings twisted and collapsed, and all living creatures perished.]
[Only when even nuclear weapons failed to kill her did those self-important leaders finally realize the severity of the situation. But by then, they could do nothing.]
[No matter how many troops they sent, they could not harm her. They could not even slow her pace.]
[And yet, in the middle of this crisis, an uninvited guest barges into Mobius's laboratory.]
"You're saying you're here to collect my badge?" Mobius looked at the unexpected visitor with some confusion.
Though she did not care about the badge itself, she still asked.
"Mhm… By decision of Fire Moth's upper management, the badges are being updated, so this batch of numbered ones is being recalled, Doctor♪" the staff member replied, wrapped head to toe so thoroughly that not a single inch was exposed.
"All right, then." Mobius did not look into it further.
She quickly walked over to her workbench and began pulling open drawer after drawer, searching for the badge she had no idea where she had tossed.
Meanwhile, while Mobius searched, the staff member looked all around the laboratory, seemingly fascinated by everything inside.
The door opened again, and Mo Xie stepped in.
The moment he saw the heavily covered, lively-looking staff member glancing about everywhere, he frowned slightly.
Even without seeing their face, he instinctively felt, at first glance, that he and this person were absolutely not going to get along.
"Doctor, are you looking for something?" Mo Xie ignored the staff member and addressed the busy Mobius instead.
"You're here." Seeing him, Mobius stopped what she was doing. "Have you seen my badge? The higher-ups decided to take it back."
"Hm?" Mo Xie thought for a moment. "Take it back? I haven't heard anything about that. And at a time like this?"
"It's not a recall, it's an upgrade replacement—and the order was just issued," the staff member hurriedly explained.
Then, before either of them could say more, Mo Xie casually reached into his pocket and pulled out the badge engraved with the number 1 on the back. Looking slightly reluctant, he tossed it over.
"Why is it in your pocket?" Mobius stared at him, a trace of surprise in her eyes.
"You gave it to me," Mo Xie explained simply.
Hearing that, Mobius suddenly remembered.
It seemed that, about a year ago, Mo Xie had found it while cleaning the lab.
At the time, he had apparently asked her what it was and where it should be put, and she had casually replied, If you like it, just keep it yourself.
But he had actually carried it with him all this time?
Was it because he really liked it?
Or because it had been something she gave him?
Abruptly, Mobius said, "If you like it, I'll give you another one in a couple of days."
Mo Xie shot her an odd look. "No need, Doctor. Do you even have the spare money to buy those? Weren't you saying your funding was already insufficient?"
