Chapter 7 - The Growing Shadow

After Henry saw that strange message on his phone, he tried his very best to act like everything was normal. He took a sip of his coffee. He looked at the decorations on the cafe walls. But inside his head, the message was playing over and over again like a loud echo in a dark cave.

Stay away from Zara.

He kept hearing those four words. Who could have sent this? How did that person know he was sitting in this exact cafe with Zara at this exact moment? Was someone standing outside in the rain, watching them through the glass?

Henry looked at Zara quietly. For the first time since he met her, he felt a shiver of fear. He felt like he had stepped into a situation that was much bigger and more dangerous than a simple office job.

Zara was staring at Henry with confused eyes. She was smart, and she noticed the sudden change in his face. One minute he was smiling and being charming, and the next, he looked like he had seen a monster.

"Sir... I mean, Henry... is everything okay?" she asked. Her voice was very careful, as if she was afraid of breaking the silence.

Henry did not answer. He didn't even look at her. His mind was spinning with questions. Stay away from Zara. Stay away from Zara. He placed his phone face down on the wooden table so he wouldn't have to see the screen anymore. He stared into his black coffee. His eyes didn't blink for a long time.

Zara felt very uncomfortable. The air in the cafe suddenly felt cold. "Is something wrong?" she asked again, leaning forward.

Finally, Henry forced himself to blink. He cleared his throat and tried to look calm. He nodded slowly. "No. Nothing is wrong. It is fine," he said.

But his voice was different now. It wasn't warm or friendly anymore. It sounded empty, like he was talking from a long distance away.

A heavy silence grew between them. Zara tried to take a sip of her coffee, but it didn't taste good anymore. She could feel that Henry's mood had shifted completely, but she had no idea why. She wondered if she had said something to offend him.

After a long, awkward moment, Henry spoke in a low, serious voice. "Zara, I think we should leave now."

Zara looked surprised. She had just started to feel relaxed. "Leave? Did I do something wrong? Are you angry with me?"

"No," Henry said quickly, finally looking at her. "It is not you. I just remembered something very important. Something urgent that I have to take care of right now. Let's go. I will drop you at your home."

He stood up fast and grabbed his jacket. He avoided looking directly into her eyes. Zara watched him for a second. She could tell he was hiding something big, but she didn't want to argue. She nodded slowly.

"Alright, let's go," she said softly.

They walked out of the cafe into the night. A cold wind whipped against their faces. The sky was pitch black, and the sound of the city traffic made the evening feel heavy and sad.

Inside the car, it was quiet at first. But as Henry drove through the city streets, Zara started talking a little. Maybe she wanted to break the silence. She spoke about her future. She spoke about her hopes for the baby growing inside her. She spoke about how she just wanted a simple, peaceful life where she didn't have to run away anymore.

Henry listened to every word. He didn't interrupt her. He didn't judge her. He just kept his eyes on the road and listened with full attention. Even though he was worried about the message, his eyes showed real concern for Zara.

Gradually, Zara's nervousness began to fade. Being in the car with Henry made her feel protected. She finally felt relaxed enough to smile. By the time he dropped her off at her small apartment building, she realized something surprising: she wasn't afraid of Henry anymore. She didn't feel like he was just a boss or a mean man from a cafe. She felt... supported.

For the first time in many months, Zara felt like someone actually cared about her safety.

Days began to pass, and life at the office became a routine.

Henry checked on Zara regularly. He would stop by her desk to make sure she was eating a good lunch and not stressing too much about her work. He was always a gentleman. He never crossed a line or made her feel uncomfortable. He simply cared for her in a genuine way.

Slowly, Zara started to trust him. She began to smile more at work. She talked to her coworkers. She didn't feel so alone anymore. The giant cloud of fear that had been following her since she ran away from her wedding was slowly starting to blow away. She felt lighter. She felt safer. She felt more confident in her shoes.

Without planning it, a quiet bond formed between them. It was a friendship built on respect and kindness. For the first time in a very long time, Zara felt that life was giving her something good again. She had found peace.

One evening, the sky was turning a dark, dusty purple as Zara stepped out of the office building. The street lights were waking up one by one, casting long shadows on the sidewalk. The air was chilly, and Zara's body felt tired from a long day of filing papers and doing research. But her mind was restless.

She stood near the office gate, waiting for a taxi. Several yellow cabs passed by, but they were all full of passengers. One cab slowed down, but then drove away without stopping.

Zara sighed softly. She didn't want to spend a lot of money on an expensive car service, but she also knew she couldn't walk all the way back to Jackson Heights in her condition. She was tired, and her back was aching.

She turned to check the road again when she heard a familiar honk-honk. A white car pulled up to the curb next to her. The window rolled down smoothly.

It was Henry.

"Zara, where are you going all alone at this hour?" he asked.

Zara hesitated. She didn't want to be a bother. "I am just trying to get a taxi. It is fine, Henry. I will manage."

Henry shook his head. "Don't be silly. Get in. I will drop you off."

Zara opened the door and sat inside the warm car. For the first few minutes, they didn't talk. The only sound was the soft hum of the engine. Zara looked out the window. She saw the golden lines of the street lights passing by. She saw groups of friends laughing and drinking tea near a small shop.

She watched them and felt a small ache in her heart. Her life had changed so fast that sometimes she felt like she was watching the world through a thick pane of glass.

Henry's voice broke through her thoughts. "You did a very good job today, Zara. You handled that research project better than I expected for a new employee."

Zara looked up, surprised and happy. "Thank you, Henry."

"I mean it," Henry said, his voice serious. "You have a lot of potential. You just need the right support. Work becomes much easier when you know someone believes in you."

Zara lowered her eyes. "I don't know if I deserve that. So many things have gone wrong in my life lately."

Henry slowed the car down as they reached a red traffic light. He turned his head toward her. His eyes were very gentle and kind.

"Zara, look at me," he said. "You are carrying a new life inside you. You are working hard and managing everything all by yourself in a big city. That is not a small thing. Not everyone is strong enough to do what you are doing."

Zara felt her throat tighten. Her eyes became shiny with tears. She quickly looked away toward the window so he wouldn't see her cry. She wasn't used to people saying nice things to her.

The light turned green, and the car moved again. The city was now completely dark. Shops were pulling down their metal shutters. The roads were getting quiet.

"You never told me the father's name," Henry said softly. He wasn't being mean or nosy. His voice sounded curious and caring.

Zara's fingers curled into tight balls in her lap. She thought about the night with the guitar player, Romeo. She thought about the wedding she ran away from. "That part of my life is over," she whispered. "I don't ever want to go back there."

Henry nodded. "Alright. I understand. I will not ask you about it again."

A few minutes later, as they got closer to her home, Henry spoke again. "Zara, if you ever need help—with anything at all—you can tell me. Not because I am your boss. But because I am someone who wants to see you safe."

Suddenly, Zara's phone vibrated in her hand. Bzzzt.

She looked down at the screen. In an instant, all the color drained from her face. Her body froze, and she felt like she couldn't move her arms.

It was a message from an unknown number. It said: "If you think you are safe with this guy, you are wrong. He is also part of this game."

Her hands started to shake uncontrollably. Henry saw the sudden look of terror in her eyes.

"Zara? Zara, are you alright? What happened?" he asked. His voice was full of deep concern. He started to slow the car down.

Zara forced a small, fake smile. But the fear on her face was too big to hide. It was written in her wide eyes and her pale lips.

"Yes... it is nothing. Just a spam message," she whispered.

But she knew it was not nothing. It was the beginning of a giant storm.

This was not a normal warning. Someone was watching her every move. Someone knew she was in the car with Henry. Someone wanted to control her life all over again.

The same fear she had tried to run away from was slowly creeping back into her world. She looked at the phone screen with trembling hands. She did not open the message further. Not yet.

Because deep inside her heart, Zara already knew the truth. Her past was coming back for her. And this time, it wasn't coming quietly. It was coming with a dark secret that could break her new life into a million pieces.

She whispered to herself, so quietly that Henry couldn't hear, "What is happening to my life again?"

Then, the screen lit up with one more notification. Blink.

She didn't open it. She just sat there in the passenger seat, holding the phone close to her chest, breathing fast. She hoped with all her heart that tomorrow would bring some light and safety.

But deep down, she knew the truth. Tomorrow was going to bring a big twist. A twist she was not ready for. A twist that would change everything forever.

Get ready! In the next episode, a dark secret from Zara's past will be revealed. You will finally find out who is sending these scary messages and why they want to destroy Zara's peace! The mystery is about to get even deeper!
