Chapter 38 - Noone leaves this mansion

Adriana's POV

Sleep never came.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the single word written in elegant black ink.

Check.

Such a simple word.

Five letters.

Yet somehow....It carried more weight than the echo of gunfire.

The mansion, usually filled with warmth despite the darkness surrounding our lives, felt... different.

Heavy.

Silent.

Almost as if the walls themselves were holding their breath.

I stared at the ceiling until the first rays of sunlight slipped through the curtains. My body was exhausted, but my mind refused to rest.

Beside me, Alessio's side of the bed was empty.

Cold.

My fingers brushed over the untouched sheets, and an uneasy feeling settled deep inside my chest.

He hadn't slept here.

Not after everything we'd survived together.

Not after promising that no matter what

happened, we'd face it side by side.

I swallowed the lump in my throat.

This wasn't distance.

It was protection.

And somehow... that hurt even more.

With a quiet sigh, I wrapped a silk robe around myself and stepped into the hallway.

The silence greeted me immediately.

Usually, the staff would smile politely or wish me good morning.

Today...

Nothing.

Their eyes avoided mine.

Their footsteps were hurried.

Even the maids whispered instead of speaking normally.

Fear had settled inside this house.

It wasn't loud.

It didn't need to be.

Fear had a way of infecting everyone without saying a single word.

I walked downstairs and froze.

Twice as many guards stood at every entrance.

Every window overlooking the gardens had armed men watching outside.

The front gates remained shut.

No deliveries.

No visitors.

No movement.

"What happened?" I asked one of the guards.

He lowered his head respectfully.

"Boss's orders, Signora."

Of course.

Alessio.

I continued toward his office.

The door was slightly open.

Inside, Alessio stood at the head of the room, dressed in an immaculate black suit.

His sleeves were rolled to his forearms, revealing the tattoos disappearing beneath expensive cufflinks.

Dante stood beside him with several capos.

A large map of Italy covered the conference table.

Red pins.

Black pins.

Shipping routes.

Warehouses.

Safe houses.

Every face inside the room was grim.

"...Double security at every property,"

Alessio ordered calmly.

His voice was quiet.

Controlled.

But I had learned something about my husband.

The calmer he sounded...

The angrier he truly was.

"The person who sent that envelope already knows our movements," he continued.

Silence answered him.

"We have a leak."

The words struck me like ice water.

A traitor?

Inside our own family?

One of the capos shifted uncomfortably.

"We've started questioning everyone, Boss."

"No."

Alessio slowly shook his head.

"They'll expect questions."

His grey eyes turned colder.

"We hunt instead."

Nobody argued.

Nobody even breathed too loudly.

Patient men...Were dangerous.

A floorboard creaked beneath my foot.

Every head turned toward me.

For a brief second, embarrassment washed over me.

Alessio's eyes met mine.

The coldness disappeared instantly.

Only for a heartbeat.

Then the Don returned.

"Leave us."

Without another word, every man walked out.

Dante paused beside me, offering a small nod before quietly closing the door.

Now...

It was only us.

"You should still be asleep," Alessio murmured.

I crossed my arms.

"You disappeared."

"I had work."

"You had nightmares too."

His expression barely changed.

But I noticed the slight tightening of his jaw.

"You don't know that."

"I know you."

Silence stretched between us.

I slowly walked closer until I stood in front of him.

Dark circles shadowed his eyes.

His tie hung slightly loose.

For someone who always looked

untouchable...

He looked exhausted.

My heart squeezed painfully.

Without thinking, I reached up and straightened his tie.

"You didn't sleep."

His gaze softened.

"No."

"You should have woken me."

"I wanted one of us to rest."

A bitter smile escaped me.

"I didn't."

For the first time since entering the room...

He sighed.

A real sigh.

Heavy.

Tired.

His fingers gently tucked a loose strand of hair behind my ear before resting against my cheek.

The tenderness nearly broke me.

"You're scared," I whispered.

"I'm calculating."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the only one you're getting."

Frustration flared inside me.

"You keep shutting me out."

"I'm keeping you alive."

"I don't need protecting every second."

His expression hardened.

"No?"

He stepped closer until only inches

separated us.

"You think that envelope was sent to threaten me?"

I hesitated.

"It wasn't."

His voice dropped to a whisper.

"It was sent because someone wants my attention divided."

His thumb brushed softly across my cheek.

"And you're the easiest way to do that."

My breath caught.

"I won't let anyone use you against me, Adriana."

There was no arrogance in his words.

Only fear.

Real fear.

It shook me more than shouting ever could.

Before I could answer—

Knock. Knock.

The office door flew open.

A guard entered, breathing hard.

"Boss..."

Alessio didn't look away from me.

"What is it?"

"We found another envelope."

His eyes instantly darkened.

"Where?"

"Attached to the front gates."

The guard handed him another black envelope.

No name.

No fingerprints.

Nothing.

Alessio opened it carefully.

I expected another message.

Instead...

Something small dropped into his palm.

A white chess king.

Broken cleanly in half.

Nobody spoke.

Even the air seemed frozen.

Alessio stared at the shattered piece for several long seconds before slowly closing his fingers around it.

"So..."

His voice was frighteningly calm.

"The game has officially begun."

He looked at the guard.

"Seal every entrance."

"No one leaves this mansion without my permission."

"Assign two additional guards to Adriana.

They stay with her at all times."

I frowned immediately.

"Alessio—"

He cut me off with one look.

A look that wasn't angry...

It was terrified of losing me.

The guard nodded.

"Yes, Boss."

When the door finally closed, silence filled the office once again.

I looked at my husband.

His face remained unreadable.

Cold.

Collected.

Untouchable.

But now I knew better.

Beneath that perfect control...

Alessio De Luca wasn't afraid of dying.

He was afraid...

Of watching me die.

And somehow...

That frightened me far more than the word—

Check.
