Chapter 138 - 138 The Witches

Standing at the entrance of the studio once more, Hugo had clearly adapted a lot. Although his rapidly beating heart still showed his nervousness, at least he was no longer completely clueless, which allowed Hugo to concentrate a little. The young man standing next to him wore a headset and held a folder in his hand. He was waiting for the director's command to inform Hugo when to enter. The boy listened to the sounds from inside the studio, confirmed that a little more time was needed, then looked at Hugo, who was close by. After much hesitation, he plucked up the courage and said to Hugo, "Hugo, you're really great! This movie is definitely going to be a success!"Although Hugo had indeed felt his recognition improve in many ways after the release of "Scent of a Woman," every time someone cheered him on, Hugo still felt a deep joy in his heart. He gave the boy a brilliant smile and said, "Thank you!"Earning the recognition of industry professionals is not easy for any actor. Perhaps today he is just a small assistant, but who can say that tomorrow Hugo won't achieve even greater success?"Not long ago, this young actor appeared on our show and had a very pleasant conversation with me. Today, he returns with his brand new work, 'A Few Good Men.' Let's welcome: Hugo Lancaster!" Jay's voice echoed through the studio. The young man gestured for Hugo to enter. Hugo smiled, patted the boy's shoulder, and whispered "Thank you" again before stepping forward. The young man remained in place, a smile blossoming on his face.As Hugo walked into the studio, the two hundred audience members on his left immediately stood up and welcomed him with the warmest applause.Hugo smiled and waved at the audience. He immediately saw the familiar "Embrace Here" sign, and today the person holding the sign was Meredith Morris, whom he had seen once before at the premiere.Hugo's gaze fell on Meredith, and his smile deepened a little, causing Meredith's scream to instantly go up another octave.Hugo withdrew his gaze and looked in Jay's direction. His eyes had only shifted halfway when they were caught by the humorous group of sculptures in front of him.The Golden Raspberry Award trophy-shaped sculpture from Hugo's previous visit was still there, but today it was surrounded by a circle of fist-sized raspberry sculptures, looking like the Golden Raspberry trophy's children. This scene had the comedic effect of a cartoon, and the laughter it generated was astonishing. Hugo couldn't help but clap his hands and laugh out loud. It had to be said that "The Tonight Show" team had really put a lot of thought into poking fun at Hugo.Hugo walked onto the stage with a chuckle, giving Jay a big hug and deliberately patting Jay's back twice to express his thoughts on this "gift.""Welcome back, pal, good to see you again," Jay said, settling back into his seat and greeting Hugo casually."Me too, me too," Hugo repeated simply, taking a seat on the sofa and saying with a chuckle, "I had a premonition that 'good' things would happen tonight, and sure enough, sure enough...""Of course, we're in Los Angeles, this is how we work, you should get used to it," Jay said proudly, clearly more than satisfied with the trophy display."No, no, no, I think I'll take them all home," Hugo said grandly, pointing to the circle of Golden Raspberry trophies in front of him.Jay immediately retorted, "Oh, oh... that's a lot of movies, are you sure?" This implied that Hugo would receive Golden Raspberry Awards for many movies in the future.Faced with such teasing, Hugo raised his hands in a gesture of surrender. "I'm not sure, but at least I think they owe me two trophies, and I'll get them back."Hugo was jokingly implying that "Fatal Instinct" and "The Rookie" should also have received Golden Raspberry Awards. This jab caused a chorus of applause, laughter, and whistles from the audience."Did you see last week's 'Vanity Fair'?" Jay took out a magazine from beside him, which was indeed the latest issue of "Vanity Fair," with Kevin Costner on the cover.Although the film "The Bodyguard," starring Kevin and Whitney Houston, drew widespread criticism from critics, it achieved unparalleled success in terms of public discussion. In particular, several of Whitney's songs in the film garnered immense attention, with "I Will Always Love You" igniting the entire music industry. This also made Kevin the cover personality for the latest issue of "Vanity Fair.""Oh, no, I don't recall being interviewed by them." Hugo shook his head, looking bewildered. To be precise, Hugo had not yet given any exclusive magazine interviews.Previous interviews with newspapers and magazines like the "Los Angeles Times" were relatively brief and not considered feature stories, so Hugo was quite unfamiliar with magazines."No, they didn't interview you, but they made a predictive review of the upcoming 'A Few Good Men,'" Jay explained. "In the article, they briefly discussed your excellent performance in'Scent of a Woman'...""Oh, that's good," Hugo smiled and nodded."And then they focused on reviewing your upcoming movie. The magazine said you would ruin the movie because you're too boyish, and this time it's not Jack Nicholson driving the plot; you're the lead, so the outcome is worrying. Do you agree?"Jay's subsequent words were bad news, but they made Hugo laugh. The success of "Scent of a Woman" was undeniable, but besides praise, there were also many discordant opinions. On one hand, they believed that Hugo's excellent performance was due to Al Pacino's brilliant acting, and Hugo's own contribution was not significant. On the other hand, all the roles in which Hugo had truly succeeded since his debut were students, with "Dead Poets Society" and "Scent of a Woman" being particularly obvious examples.Clearly, Hugo's scholarly demeanor brought him opportunities and accolades, but also limited his development."Vanity Fair" represented this type of opinion, still not optimistic about the prospects of "A Few Good Men," believing that Hugo would ruin the film."No, of course I don't agree," Hugo flatly denied. "If I agreed, I wouldn't have taken on this movie, would I?"Hugo's simple rhetorical question expressed his point of view: "You think I'm too boyish because you haven't seen my masculine side.Once you see it, you won't have such absurd ideas anymore. You know, I am a man first, and an actor second," Hugo said jokingly."Oh, I wish I hadn't seen it," Jay raised an eyebrow and interjected, implying that he was heterosexual and completely uninterested in Hugo's masculine qualities. This immediately made the audience burst into laughter. And Jay didn't let up, "What, do you want to show me?"Hugo immediately burst into helpless laughter, the laughter from the audience forcing him to pause before speaking again. "Of course, I don't mind showing you. Do you have some secret to hide, afraid it will be exposed in front of my masculinity?"This was essentially saying, "Are you gay, afraid of falling in love with me?" Hugo's counterattack was indeed sharp, and the laughter from the audience almost drowned out the microphone's sound.Jay clapped his hands and laughed heartily. After the sound finally subsided, he raised his hands and said, "Believe me, if I had a secret, I'd choose a marriage."This was a clear allusion to the recent rampant rumors surrounding the marriage of Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman.Although Tom and Nicole married at the end of 1990, there had always been rumors that Tom, in order to conceal his homosexuality, was forced to divorce his ex-wife Mimi Rogers—who had once worked with Hugo on "Fatal Instinct"—because Mimi was no longer willing to continue hiding it.So Tom chose another safe harbor: the new actress Nicole, who desperately needed to rise to fame through Tom.The result was as expected: Tom had a second marriage, and the gay rumors were suppressed again; Nicole successfully became famous overnight through this marriage. However, rumors about this marriage had recently resurfaced because Nicole's acting career had not taken off, and the couple had shown no signs of pregnancy in two years of marriage, coupled with the buzz generated by the upcoming release of "A Few Good Men," causing the rumors to resurface.Jay and Hugo, in their back-and-forth, subtly mocked Tom and Nicole, causing a flurry of whistles from the audience.Everyone knew Jay's excellent wit, but Hugo's calm responses brought a pleasant surprise."That's a wise choice," Hugo said meaningfully. He and Jay exchanged knowing smiles."So, you don't agree with what this magazine says," Jay pulled the conversation back, pointing to the magazine in his hand and asking."Oh, no, of course not," Hugo waved his hands repeatedly. "If you don't trust me, you can certainly go to the cinema to watch. If you still feel that way after watching, then I am willing to accept your criticism.""Sly fellow," Jay immediately saw through Hugo's little trick. Hugo was essentially appealing to the audience to watch the movie and contribute to the box office."But I like it," Jay chuckled. "Next, we'll take a break. After the commercials, there will be even more exciting content."Once the live band's music started, Jay leaned closer to Hugo and whispered, "So, you're quite bold."To openly tease the hugely popular Tom required a lot of courage. Although they hadn't explicitly said anything, everyone in the industry knew what was going on.Hugo, however, shrugged innocently, "Did we say anything just now?" After all, he hadn't named names, and it was anyone's freedom to take offense. This immediately made Jay laugh. He shook his head and said, "No, no, we didn't say anything."
