Chapter 30 - When Someone Else Gets Too Close

It started quietly.

Almost too quietly.

Like the world had decided to test Shen Yichen without warning him first.

Lin Yue was standing near the study entrance, speaking softly to Lu Han about something trivial—something that should have meant nothing.

But Shen Yichen noticed immediately.

Not the words.

The distance.

Lu Han was closer than he liked.

Closer than necessary.

Shen Yichen didn't interrupt at first.

He just watched.

Still.

Silent.

Lin Yue turned slightly while speaking, and for a moment she wasn't looking at him.

That was the moment something inside him tightened.

Not anger.

Awareness.

Lu Han noticed him watching and paused.

"…Shen Yichen?" he said carefully.

No response.

Shen Yichen stepped forward.

Slow.

Controlled.

But every step carried weight now.

Lin Yue turned toward him.

"What is it?" she asked softly.

Shen Yichen's gaze didn't leave Lu Han.

"I didn't like the distance," he said.

Silence.

Lu Han blinked.

"The distance?" he repeated.

Lin Yue frowned slightly.

"We were just talking."

Shen Yichen finally looked at her.

"Yes."

A pause.

"And he was too close."

That sentence changed the air instantly.

Lin Yue's expression shifted slightly.

"You're doing it again," she said quietly.

Shen Yichen didn't deny it.

"I know."

But he didn't step back either.

Lu Han exhaled slowly.

"This is exactly what I was talking about," he said.

Shen Yichen finally looked at him fully.

Slow.

Cold.

"I don't like unnecessary proximity," he said.

Lu Han frowned.

"It wasn't unnecessary."

Shen Yichen didn't respond immediately.

Then quietly:

"It felt unnecessary."

Silence.

That was the problem.

Feeling had become his authority.

Lin Yue stepped slightly forward, trying to ease the tension.

"Shen Yichen, you can't control every interaction I have."

His eyes immediately shifted to her.

Not sharp.

But focused.

"I'm not controlling," he said.

A pause.

"I'm reacting."

Lu Han's voice tightened.

"You're reacting possessively."

Shen Yichen didn't deny it.

"Yes."

Simple.

Honest.

Unfiltered again.

"And I don't like it when people stand too close to you."

Lin Yue looked at him carefully.

"Even when it's harmless?"

Shen Yichen paused.

That was the first real hesitation.

Then:

"Yes."

Silence dropped again.

Lu Han let out a small, humorless breath.

"So harmless doesn't matter anymore?"

Shen Yichen turned to him.

Slow.

Controlled.

"It matters less than how it makes me feel."

Lin Yue's expression tightened slightly.

"You're letting emotion override logic again."

Shen Yichen nodded once.

"I always do when it comes to you."

That line landed heavier than the rest.

Not romantic.

Not soft.

A fact stated without apology.

Lin Yue went quiet for a moment.

"You're going to isolate me from everyone like this," she said softly.

Shen Yichen didn't hesitate.

"No."

A pause.

"I'm going to stay close enough that I don't lose you."

Lu Han stepped forward again.

"That's isolation with a different name."

Shen Yichen finally looked at him fully.

"And losing her again has a name too," he said quietly.

Silence.

No one responded to that.

Because there wasn't a clean answer.

Lin Yue looked between them, then back at Shen Yichen.

"You can't decide who gets to be near me," she said softly.

Shen Yichen's gaze softened slightly—but didn't waver.

"I'm not deciding for you," he said.

A pause.

"I'm deciding for what I can survive."

Silence settled again.

And for the first time—

a crack formed in the pattern.

Not from distance.

But from someone else standing too close…

and Shen Yichen realizing he might not be able to tolerate a world where that happens again.
