The next shift didn't announce itself.
It just… appeared in the gaps.
Shen Yichen noticed it during something small.
Lin Yue left the room.
Nothing happened.
Not immediately.
Not after a delay either.
Just—nothing.
And for a few seconds longer than usual…
he stayed still.
Lu Han noticed first.
"You didn't follow her instantly," he said quietly.
Shen Yichen blinked once.
"…No," he admitted.
Lin Yue returned a moment later, unaware.
Shen Yichen looked at her.
No spike.
No tightening.
Just recognition.
That unsettled him more than panic used to.
Lin Yue tilted her head slightly.
"You're staring," she said softly.
Shen Yichen paused.
"…I'm checking," he said.
A pause.
"For reaction."
Lu Han stepped forward slightly.
"You're testing stability again," he said.
Shen Yichen nodded once.
"Yes."
Simple.
But this time—less urgent.
Lin Yue studied him carefully.
"And what are the results?" she asked.
Shen Yichen hesitated.
"…Nothing broke," he said quietly.
A pause.
"And that's the problem."
Silence.
That sentence didn't sound like fear.
It sounded like uncertainty without alarm.
Lu Han frowned.
"Why is that a problem?"
Shen Yichen looked at Lin Yue.
"Because I expected something to break," he said.
A pause.
"And it didn't."
Silence.
Lin Yue stepped slightly closer.
Shen Yichen noticed—but again, no immediate reaction.
Just delayed awareness.
Lin Yue spoke softly.
"You're learning that absence of fear doesn't equal danger."
Shen Yichen didn't answer immediately.
Then quietly:
"I think I'm learning that fear was louder than reality."
Silence.
That was new.
Lu Han exhaled slowly.
"You're separating emotional prediction from actual outcome," he said.
Shen Yichen nodded once.
"I think so."
A pause.
"But I still don't trust silence."
Lin Yue tilted her head.
"Why not?"
Shen Yichen hesitated.
"…Because silence used to mean something was already gone," he said quietly.
Silence.
That memory still lingered.
But it wasn't controlling him the same way anymore.
Lu Han's voice softened.
"That association weakens over time," he said.
Shen Yichen looked at him.
"I don't want to lose awareness," he said quietly.
A pause.
"Just panic."
Silence.
Lin Yue stepped a fraction closer again.
Shen Yichen noticed—but the reaction came late.
Mild.
Almost confused.
Lin Yue spoke softly.
"You're starting to experience me without immediate fear attached," she said.
Shen Yichen nodded once.
"…Yes."
A pause.
"And I don't know what to do with that yet."
Silence.
Lu Han looked between them.
"You're entering emotional recalibration," he said quietly.
Shen Yichen frowned slightly.
"It feels like uncertainty," he admitted.
Lin Yue smiled faintly.
"That's because it is," she said gently.
Silence.
Shen Yichen looked at her for a long moment.
"…If I stop expecting loss," he said quietly,
"what do I expect instead?"
No one answered immediately.
Because that question was the real turning point.
Lin Yue finally spoke softly.
"Maybe just… me staying."
Shen Yichen didn't respond right away.
His gaze stayed on her.
No panic.
No alarm.
Just something unfamiliar—
calm without fear attached.
And for the first time,
that calm didn't feel like danger.
It felt like unknown safety.
