Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: Baptism by Fire

Naruto: The Second Chance of Obito Uchiha

Chapter 10: Baptism by Fire

The gates of Konoha slowly opened before sunrise.

A cool breeze swept through the village as shinobi squads departed one after another.

Some marched confidently.

Others looked back one last time.

No one knew when they would return.

Team Minato stood among them.

Each carried a packed field bag and enough supplies for several days.

Minato looked at his students before speaking.

"Our mission is a B-rank reconnaissance assignment near the border between the Land of Fire and the Land of Earth."

He unrolled a map.

"Our objective is to investigate reports of Iwagakure movements, gather intelligence, and avoid unnecessary combat."

Kakashi nodded.

"Understood."

Rin carefully memorized the map.

Obito quietly studied the terrain.

He remembered this region.

Not this exact mission…

But the area itself.

If history remained close to its original course, enemy patrols would already be operating there.

Several hours later, Team Minato crossed into a dense forest near the border.

The atmosphere was different.

The sounds of wildlife were scarce.

Broken branches littered the ground.

Fresh footprints covered the muddy trails.

Minato crouched beside one of them.

"Three days old."

Kakashi examined another.

"Heavy equipment."

Obito pointed toward a snapped tree limb.

"They moved north."

Minato looked at him.

"You noticed that quickly."

Obito smiled.

"I've been paying attention."

Minato returned the smile, though he still found Obito's instincts unusual.

Near sunset, they reached a rocky cliff overlooking a narrow valley.

Minato raised a hand.

Everyone stopped.

Below them…

Hundreds of tents stretched across the valley floor.

Supply wagons moved constantly.

Shinobi patrolled the perimeter.

Rin quietly whispered,

"That's…"

"An Iwa encampment," Minato finished.

Far larger than anyone expected.

Obito's expression darkened.

So it's starting…

This wasn't merely a patrol base.

It was a staging ground for a major offensive.

Exactly the kind of force that would eventually push Konoha deeper into the war.

Minato quietly counted the tents.

"This information has to reach Lord Third."

As they prepared to leave, Kakashi suddenly froze.

"Movement."

Four Iwa shinobi appeared on the ridge opposite them.

One pointed directly toward Team Minato.

"They're Leaf ninja!"

"So much for avoiding combat," Minato muttered.

"Scatter!"

The enemy attacked immediately.

Earth Style techniques shattered the rocky terrain.

Massive stone spikes erupted from the ground.

Rin barely avoided one.

Kakashi intercepted another enemy with his tanto.

Steel clashed.

Obito ducked beneath a flying boulder.

Not this time.

He remembered countless battles against Earth Style users.

Their techniques were powerful…

But predictable.

An Iwa chunin charged forward with a war hammer.

Obito sidestepped just before the weapon struck.

The hammer shattered solid rock.

Obito swept the enemy's legs before striking the back of his neck with the hilt of a kunai.

The chunin collapsed unconscious.

Another enemy formed hand seals.

"Earth Style: Stone Bullet!"

Obito grabbed Rin's arm.

"Move!"

The barrage crashed into the cliff behind them.

Fragments of stone exploded in every direction.

Rin looked at him.

"You knew where it would hit."

Obito smiled.

"Lucky guess."

She wasn't convinced.

Meanwhile…

Kakashi fought two opponents alone.

His movements were calm.

Efficient.

Every strike had purpose.

Watching him, Obito couldn't help smiling.

Even now…

Kakashi was incredible.

Minato suddenly vanished.

In an instant, he appeared behind the remaining enemy.

One precise strike ended the battle.

Silence returned to the valley.

The entire fight had lasted less than three minutes.

Minato quickly checked his students.

"Anyone hurt?"

Rin shook her head.

"I'm fine."

Kakashi nodded.

"No injuries."

Obito brushed dust from his clothes.

"Nothing serious."

Minato smiled with relief.

"Good."

"But our mission just became far more important."

He looked back toward the massive Iwa encampment.

"We're returning to Konoha immediately."

The journey home was tense.

No one relaxed.

If one patrol had discovered them…

Others could be nearby.

Even Obito remained on high alert.

This wasn't the Fourth Great Ninja War.

One careless mistake now could still change everything.

Late the following evening, Team Minato returned to Konoha.

They reported directly to the Hokage Tower.

Inside the strategy room stood Hiruzen, Jiraiya, Tsunade, Orochimaru, Shikaku Nara, and several senior jonin.

Minato spread the map across the table.

"Iwa has established a large military encampment near the border."

The room fell silent.

Shikaku adjusted the pieces on the strategy board.

"So they've finally committed."

Hiruzen slowly nodded.

"This confirms our intelligence."

Jiraiya crossed his arms.

"The real fighting is about to begin."

Tsunade sighed quietly.

"I'll prepare additional medical teams."

Orochimaru studied the map without speaking.

Obito remained near the doorway.

Listening.

Watching.

He remembered meetings like this from another lifetime.

Every decision made here would send hundreds of shinobi into battle.

Some would return.

Many would not.

As Team Minato left the Hokage Tower, the village was already changing.

Messengers raced through the streets.

Supply wagons rolled toward the gates.

Medical corps gathered equipment.

Fresh mission assignments were posted across headquarters.

War was no longer approaching.

It had arrived.

Obito stopped and looked toward the distant mountains.

The timeline was still close to the one he remembered.

But not identical.

Small changes had already begun.

His friendships with Kakashi and Rin were stronger.

Team Minato trusted one another more.

And for the first time…

Obito wasn't walking toward the future alone.

He clenched his fist.

"The real battles begin now."

Above them, dark clouds gathered over the horizon.

The flames of the Third Great Ninja War had finally reached the Hidden Leaf.

And Team Minato was about to be thrown into the heart of it.
