Chapter 142 - What Follows

Chapter 142 — What Follows

The Vardø disappeared between the trees.

Brook did not move.

Neither did Crowley.

For several seconds, Xcution stood in the silence left behind.

Then Crowley spoke.

"Silvet."

No one reacted with confusion.

They had met him.

Deep beneath Remus.

A man who had walked into the ruins as if he had been expected.

A man who had looked directly at Shoyo and greeted her by name.

Brook remembered the discomfort in the room.

Silvet had known too much.

And now he was here.

Or had been.

Brook stared into the trees.

"You're sure?"

Crowley nodded.

"I saw enough."

Henry looked toward the forest.

"Great."

Sera folded her arms.

"You say that like this is somehow surprising."

Henry looked at her.

"I was hoping he was someone else."

Brook crouched near the ground.

The Vardø tracks were everywhere.

But between them—

human footprints.

Crowley noticed them too.

"He walked through them."

Henry frowned.

"What?"

Brook pointed.

"The Vardø didn't chase him."

Sera looked closer.

"They moved around him."

Rick stepped beside them.

"Like they knew him."

Nobody liked that.

Brook looked toward Shoyo.

She was already watching the forest.

"What?"

Shoyo shook her head.

"I don't know what he's doing."

Brook studied her.

"That's the truth?"

Shoyo looked at him.

"Yes."

Brook nodded once.

He believed her.

That didn't make him feel better.

The old man began laughing.

Henry closed his eyes.

"Of course."

Rick still stood beside the stranger.

Brook turned.

"What?"

The man looked toward the open ruins behind them.

"The roads are opening."

Crowley became still.

Brook noticed.

"What does that mean?"

The man looked at him.

"It means something remembered them."

Henry frowned.

"Roads don't remember."

The old man smiled.

"No."

He pointed toward Crowley.

"People do."

Crowley's expression changed.

The man continued.

"Before the sections."

Silence.

Brook looked toward Crowley.

The old world.

Crowley's missing memories.

The man was touching something Crowley could not reach.

Crowley stepped forward.

"You were there?"

The man looked at him.

"I was young."

Crowley stared.

"You should be dead."

The man laughed softly.

"I should."

Everyone looked at him.

The man lowered his eyes.

"But a king was afraid to die."

Crowley froze.

Brook immediately noticed.

"A king?"

The old man looked directly at Crowley.

"Your king."

Crowley didn't move.

Rick's grip tightened.

The old man continued.

"He had a family."

Crowley's breathing slowed.

"He wanted them safe."

A memory struck.

Crowley staggered.

Brook caught his shoulder.

"Crowley."

The forest disappeared.

For Crowley—

a palace.

Rain against stone.

A man kneeling.

Not begging for himself.

Begging for people behind him.

A woman.

Children.

Crowley standing over him.

A promise.

A hand covered in blood.

A voice—

Protect them.

Crowley returned.

His hand was shaking.

Brook looked at him.

"What did you see?"

Crowley swallowed.

"I knew him."

The old man smiled.

"Yes."

Crowley looked at him.

"The king."

The man nodded.

"You made the deal."

Silence.

Crowley's face darkened.

Brook stepped closer.

"What deal?"

Crowley looked at him.

Then at the old man.

His voice was barely audible.

"I gave him time."

The old man whispered:

"And he gave something back."

Crowley's expression tightened.

Brook watched him.

"What?"

The old man smiled.

"Everything."

Crowley stared at him.

Another memory tried to surface.

But it broke apart.

Crowley grabbed his head.

"No."

Brook moved closer.

"Crowley."

Crowley pushed his hand away.

"I can't."

His voice cracked.

"I can't remember."

The old man watched him.

Then quietly said:

"You promised to protect them."

Crowley stopped.

The words reached him.

Not as a full memory.

But as pain.

Crowley looked away.

For the first time, Brook saw him afraid.

Not of death.

Not of monsters.

Of forgetting.

Mórkr roared.

The sound tore through the trees.

Everyone moved.

Brook felt Death awaken.

The lifelines appeared.

Mórkr.

Massive.

Wounded.

Moving.

Azael.

Violent.

Closer than before.

Then—

another.

A calm lifeline.

Long.

Moving through the forest.

Brook followed it.

For an instant, he saw a figure.

Silvet.

Brook opened his eyes.

Crowley was watching him.

"You saw him."

Brook nodded.

"Death showed me."

Sera looked toward the forest.

"Where is he going?"

Brook turned north.

"That way."

Shoyo's face changed.

Henry noticed.

"What?"

Shoyo remained silent.

Brook looked at her.

"Where?"

She finally answered.

"An old sanctuary."

The old man immediately stopped laughing.

"No."

Rick tightened his grip.

The man pulled against him.

"Not there."

Brook looked at Shoyo.

"What is it?"

Shoyo stared north.

"It was a sanctuary."

Henry frowned.

"Was?"

Shoyo didn't answer.

Crowley stepped closer.

"You know this place."

Shoyo nodded.

"Yes."

"From when?"

Shoyo looked at him.

"Before Remus."

Brook frowned.

"Before the underground city?"

Shoyo shook her head.

"Before people called it Remus."

Nobody spoke.

Henry whispered:

"That's not comforting."

Shoyo ignored him.

"The sanctuary existed before the sections."

Brook looked toward the ruined path.

"Connected to these roads?"

"Yes."

The old man shook his head violently.

"He'll open it."

Brook turned.

"Silvet?"

The man nodded.

"That's why he's moving north."

Shoyo's expression hardened.

Brook noticed.

"What happens if he opens it?"

The old man looked at Crowley.

Crowley stared at him.

"What?"

The man whispered:

"The last seal breaks."

Silence.

Brook looked toward Shoyo.

She didn't deny it.

Henry stared.

"You knew?"

Shoyo's eyes narrowed.

"I knew the sanctuary existed."

"That isn't what I asked."

Shoyo looked at Brook.

For once—

she had no answer ready.

Then she said:

"I didn't know Silvet wanted it."

Brook's eyes narrowed.

"What is the seal?"

Shoyo looked toward the north.

"A lock."

Henry sighed.

"Of course."

Brook waited.

Shoyo continued.

"Not on a monster."

Brook's expression hardened.

"Then what?"

Shoyo looked at Crowley.

And for the first time since the underground city—

she looked genuinely afraid.

"A path."

The ground shook.

Azael roared.

Sera froze.

Brook immediately looked at her.

She caught herself.

"Don't."

Brook said nothing.

Sera narrowed her eyes.

"You were thinking something."

"I wasn't."

Henry looked at Brook.

"You were."

Brook ignored him.

Crowley looked toward the forest.

"They're getting closer."

Mórkr answered.

Brook felt the lifelines shift.

The Hunter had changed direction.

Azael had too.

Brook's face hardened.

"They stopped fighting."

Sera looked at him.

"What?"

Brook looked north.

"They're moving."

Henry followed his gaze.

"Toward the sanctuary?"

Brook nodded.

Shoyo closed her eyes.

"No."

Brook turned.

"What?"

She opened them.

"They shouldn't be able to find it."

The old man whispered:

"The Hunter finds."

Shoyo looked toward him.

The man smiled.

And Brook understood.

Mórkr was not simply following Silvet.

Silvet had opened something.

And Mórkr had found the path.

Crowley looked toward the north.

"Silvet is using the old roads."

Shoyo shook her head.

"No."

Crowley stared at her.

"Then what?"

Shoyo looked toward the forest.

"He's reopening them."

The difference mattered.

Brook understood it.

Silvet wasn't creating something new.

He was restoring something old.

Something that had been buried for a reason.

And he was doing it for The Maker.

Brook looked toward the north.

"We go after him."

Henry stared.

"Of course we do."

Sera looked toward Shoyo.

"Can we stop him?"

Shoyo didn't answer.

Crowley did.

"We have to try."

Brook began walking.

Rick followed.

Henry sighed and followed too.

Sera moved beside Brook.

Crowley stayed behind for one moment.

He looked at the old man.

The man stared at him.

Crowley spoke quietly.

"What happened to the king?"

The man smiled sadly.

"He's waiting."

Crowley froze.

The man continued.

"For you to remember."

Crowley looked away.

Then followed Xcution.

They moved north.

The forest grew darker.

The sound of Mórkr followed them.

Somewhere deeper within the trees, Azael moved too.

Two enemies.

One road.

And somewhere ahead—

Silvet was walking toward an ancient sanctuary.

Brook felt Death move inside him.

Quietly.

Watching.

For the first time in many chapters—

another presence reacted.

A faint sound.

Almost laughter.

Lucifer.

Brook stopped.

Henry looked back.

"What now?"

Brook stared ahead.

Nothing.

Then the feeling vanished.

Brook continued walking.

Behind them, the old path remained open.

And beneath the broken ruins—

something ancient waited for the last seal to break.
