Chapter 143 - The Last Seal

Chapter 143 — The Last Seal

The forest grew darker as they moved north.

Not because night was coming.

Brook could feel it.

Something was wrong with the forest itself.

The trees were too close together.

Their branches twisted above Xcution, blocking what little light remained. The ground beneath their feet was uneven, broken by roots that seemed to have grown in unnatural directions.

Henry looked up.

"I don't like this place."

Rick walked ahead without slowing.

"You don't like any place."

Henry looked at him.

"That is completely untrue."

Sera glanced back.

"Name one place you've liked recently."

Henry opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Sera smiled.

"Exactly."

Brook almost smiled.

Almost.

Then Death stirred.

Brook stopped.

Everyone else stopped with him.

Henry looked back.

"What?"

Brook stared ahead.

Lifelines.

They appeared faintly through the trees.

Not creatures.

Not people.

The forest.

Henry noticed his expression.

"What do you see?"

Brook slowly looked around.

"I don't know."

Crowley frowned.

"That isn't reassuring."

Brook raised his hand.

Thin lifelines ran through the roots beneath the ground.

Hundreds.

No.

Thousands.

Some disappeared into the trees.

Others descended beneath the earth.

Sera stepped closer.

"Brook?"

"The forest has lifelines."

Nobody answered immediately.

Shoyo looked around.

Then her face hardened.

"We're close."

Brook looked at her.

"To the sanctuary?"

Shoyo nodded.

Rick's hand moved closer to his weapon.

Henry sighed.

"Great."

The old man behind them began breathing heavily.

Crowley noticed.

"You've been here."

The man shook his head.

"No."

Crowley stared.

"You know what this place is."

The man looked at him.

"I know what people said."

Brook turned toward Shoyo.

"What did they say?"

Shoyo kept walking.

"That nothing dies here."

Henry immediately stopped.

Brook looked at him.

"Move."

Henry stared into the trees.

"Nothing?"

Shoyo answered.

"Nothing completely."

Henry looked at her.

"That somehow made it worse."

They continued.

The ground began sloping downward.

Brook felt the change first.

Death's perception stretched farther.

The lifelines beneath the ground were converging.

Moving toward one point.

A heartbeat.

Slow.

Massive.

Brook stopped again.

Crowley walked beside him.

"What now?"

Brook looked toward the earth.

"Something is underneath us."

Shoyo stopped.

Her face changed.

Brook immediately noticed.

"What?"

She looked toward him.

"The seal."

Henry stared.

"The seal is alive?"

Shoyo shook her head.

"No."

Brook didn't move.

Shoyo corrected herself.

"Not anymore."

Silence.

Sera looked at the ground.

"What does that mean?"

Shoyo looked toward the north.

"The seal wasn't always stone."

Brook's eyes narrowed.

Crowley understood before anyone else.

"No."

Shoyo looked at him.

Crowley shook his head.

"You're not saying what I think you're saying."

Shoyo didn't answer.

The old man began crying.

Henry slowly turned.

"Can someone please explain something?"

The man looked at the ground.

"It was a person."

Nobody moved.

Brook stared at Shoyo.

The First Witch remained silent.

Brook's voice became quiet.

"The last seal is a person?"

"It was."

Shoyo said.

Crowley looked toward the forest.

"Who?"

The old man answered.

"The last guardian."

Crowley went still.

Brook noticed.

Another memory.

Crowley stepped backward.

His hand went to his head.

"No."

Sera moved toward him.

"Crowley."

Crowley looked through her.

The forest disappeared.

A palace.

Stone walls.

Smoke.

Crowley stood before a throne.

A man sat there.

Older than the Crowley remembered knowing.

But familiar.

The king.

Crowley's king.

The same man from the broken memory.

His family stood behind him.

A woman.

Two children.

The king was afraid.

Not for himself.

For them.

Crowley looked down.

Blood covered his hands.

The king spoke.

"You promised me time."

Crowley answered.

"And you gave me everything."

The king smiled sadly.

Then looked toward the doors.

Something was coming.

Crowley couldn't see it.

Only darkness.

The king stood.

"Then take them."

Crowley frowned.

"What?"

The king looked toward his family.

"Take them somewhere it cannot reach."

The memory shattered.

Crowley returned.

He fell to one knee.

Brook grabbed his shoulder.

"What did you see?"

Crowley's breathing was heavy.

"The king."

The old man stared at him.

"You remember."

Crowley looked up.

"Not enough."

The man nodded.

"You never remember enough."

Crowley's expression hardened.

Brook helped him stand.

"What happened to his family?"

The old man looked away.

"I don't know."

Crowley stared at him.

"You were there."

The man shook his head.

"I was only a child."

Crowley stepped closer.

"What happened?"

The man finally looked at him.

"The king made you promise."

Crowley's face changed.

The old man continued.

"To protect them."

Brook looked at Crowley.

The same promise.

Crowley closed his eyes.

The forgotten deal had not been about power.

Not entirely.

It had been about protection.

But something had happened afterward.

Something Crowley still couldn't remember.

A branch snapped.

Everyone turned.

Nothing.

Then another.

Closer.

Rick drew his sword.

Brook reached for his weapon.

The lifelines appeared.

Small.

Dozens.

Henry looked toward Brook.

"Creatures?"

Brook nodded slowly.

"Not normal ones."

The old man whispered:

"They found us."

Shoyo's expression hardened.

"What found us?"

The man looked into the darkness.

"The dead."

Henry looked at Shoyo.

"Remember when you said nothing dies here?"

Shoyo didn't answer.

Shapes moved between the trees.

Slow.

Human.

Brook stepped forward.

The first figure emerged.

A corpse.

Its clothes had rotted away.

Its skin was grey.

Roots pushed through its body.

Sera stared.

"What is that?"

The corpse lifted its head.

Its eyes were open.

Brook saw its lifeline.

Broken.

But moving.

Then another emerged.

Then another.

Rick raised his sword.

Crowley whispered:

"They're guarding it."

Shoyo shook her head.

"No."

The dead figures continued moving.

Henry backed away.

"They're definitely doing something."

Brook's eyes narrowed.

Death reacted.

Not fear.

Recognition.

Brook looked at the creatures.

They weren't alive.

But they weren't empty either.

Something remained.

Fragments.

Brook suddenly understood.

"The lifelines."

Crowley looked at him.

"What?"

Brook pointed.

"Death never left them."

The corpses stopped.

Everyone froze.

Brook stepped forward.

"Wait."

Henry stared at him.

"What are you doing?"

Brook ignored him.

Death's perception deepened.

For a moment—

he saw the people they had been.

Guards.

Travelers.

Families.

People who had died protecting the sanctuary.

Their lifelines had broken.

But something inside the forest had caught the pieces.

Brook's voice became quiet.

"They're not attacking us."

A corpse moved closer.

Rick raised his weapon.

Brook lifted a hand.

"Don't."

The corpse stopped in front of Shoyo.

Shoyo stared at it.

Then whispered:

"I'm sorry."

The corpse's mouth opened.

No sound came.

Then—

it pointed north.

Brook looked in that direction.

Shoyo understood.

"He's already there."

Sera's face hardened.

"Silvet."

Shoyo nodded.

The dead began turning away.

Henry stared.

"They're just letting us go?"

Brook looked at them.

"No."

The corpses began moving north.

The roots dragging behind them.

Rick lowered his sword.

"They're following us."

Shoyo shook her head.

"No."

She watched the dead.

"They're going home."

They reached the edge of the forest.

And the sanctuary appeared.

Brook stopped.

It wasn't a building.

Not anymore.

Stone walls rose from the earth in a circle around a massive clearing.

Most had collapsed.

Ancient symbols covered the remaining stone.

In the center stood a single black structure.

Tall.

Narrow.

A door.

The ground beneath it was covered in roots.

Brook immediately saw the lifelines.

Everything led there.

The entire forest.

The dead.

The roots.

The sanctuary.

One point.

One seal.

Henry stared.

"That?"

Shoyo nodded.

"The last seal."

The old man began screaming.

"No!"

Rick grabbed him.

The man pointed toward the black structure.

"It shouldn't be open!"

Brook's expression hardened.

The door was open.

Just slightly.

Cold air escaped through the gap.

Crowley stepped forward.

Brook grabbed his arm.

Crowley looked at him.

"Don't."

Brook stared at the door.

"I wasn't going to."

Crowley raised an eyebrow.

Brook released him.

Sera stepped closer.

"Silvet did this."

Shoyo looked at the door.

"Yes."

Brook frowned.

"You know that?"

Shoyo pointed.

The symbol carved into the black stone.

The same mark.

The one they had found beneath the ruins.

Brook's expression hardened.

Silvet had reached the sanctuary first.

Henry looked around.

"So where is he?"

Nobody answered.

Then—

Death moved inside Brook.

His vision blurred.

Lifelines.

One.

Far away.

Calm.

Long.

Silvet.

Brook opened his eyes.

"He left."

Shoyo looked at him.

"You can see him?"

"Not clearly."

Brook turned toward the north.

"But he's moving away."

Crowley looked at the open door.

"Then he got what he wanted."

Silence.

The old man began crying harder.

Brook looked at him.

"What is behind the seal?"

The man shook his head.

"I don't know."

Shoyo answered.

"Neither do I."

Brook turned.

Shoyo stared at the door.

"I know what it protects."

Henry looked at her.

"Which is?"

Shoyo's face tightened.

"The world."

Nobody spoke.

Then Crowley walked toward the door.

Brook followed.

Crowley stared through the opening.

Nothing.

Only darkness.

Brook looked toward Shoyo.

"What happens if it breaks?"

Shoyo looked at him.

"I don't know."

Brook stepped toward the door.

A whisper came from inside.

He froze.

Crowley heard it too.

Brook looked at him.

"What did it say?"

Crowley was pale.

The whisper came again.

Crowley's eyes widened.

Brook grabbed his shoulder.

"What?"

Crowley looked toward the darkness.

"It knows me."

The whisper came again.

This time—

everyone heard it.

A name.

Not Brook.

Not Shoyo.

Not Sera.

Crowley.

The old man collapsed.

The dead in the forest stopped moving.

Even the wind disappeared.

Then the ground shook.

Mórkr roared.

Much closer.

Azael answered.

Brook turned toward the forest.

Death showed him both lifelines.

Moving.

Fast.

Toward the sanctuary.

Brook's expression hardened.

"We have company."

Crowley looked toward the open seal.

The whisper came again.

"You promised."

Crowley froze.

Brook looked toward him.

Crowley whispered:

"I know."

Then Xcution turned toward the forest.

Because whatever Silvet had done—

they were not going to have time to understand it.
