CHAPTER 240
It wasn't what he had expected. The room was spacious. Not luxurious, but comfortable.
The concrete walls were clean and well maintained. Two single beds stood against opposite walls, both neatly made. Between them sat a sturdy wooden table surrounded by chairs. Folded newspapers rested on one corner beside several books that looked recently read.
A sofa facing a low cabinet. A chessboard remained arranged on top of it, the pieces frozen in the middle of an unfinished match. A wardrobe occupied another corner.
Empty dishes still sat on the dining table. It looked less like a prison and more like a temporary apartment.
The man who had escorted them downstairs quietly walked past. "Excuse me."
Neither Astrid nor Alistair reacted as he collected the used dishes from the table.
He replaced them with several bottles of fresh drinking water before bowing slightly and leaving the room without another word. The steel door remained open.
