Chapter 20 - The Aevis in the diner

What the hell???

The Aevis.... WINKED?

These things hardly ever made eye contact, much less winked. And here and Aevis was, winking at people, and ordering human food... in English.

What was going on in this weird ass town??

I decided to dip. Aevis are not something I mess with. They're creepy and off putting.

I put a twenty on the table for my coffee, more than enough for it and a tip, and headed out. I could feel it though, the Aevis was watching my every move.

As I headed back to the motel, I kept looking behind me.

"What are you, 12?" I thought to myself. "Scared of one Aevis, the ones that literally won't even kill anyone?"

By the time I managed to make it to the room, I almost had myself convinced I imagined it.

I walked back in and Hades greeted me with a nod.

"Good, you're back," he said, always with his calm demeanor. "I may have found a lead."

Hades then told me about an abandoned cabin that Richard's late great uncle had left behind. It wasn't on our radar initially because of the fact that this cabin was practically falling apart, and his great uncle was actually like a 3rd cousin twice removed.

Still, worth checking out.

We decided to head out first light.

"Did you happen upon anywhere good for dinner?" Hades asked nonchalantly.

"No," I answered, almost too quickly. "Always thinking about food. Typical man." In honesty, I was getting hungry. But those icy blue eyes and that pure white hair scared me. I wasn't about to go out again.

"I'll have someone deliver us something," Hades muttered.

In less than an hour, a knock came at out door. I instinctively jumped, thinking of the Aevis again. Hades gave me a puzzling look, then got up and retrieved our pizza. After tipping, he brought the pizza over to my bed and we sat on it, both eating for a while before he spoke again.

"Why so jumpy?" He raised his eyebrows. He looked curious, not judgemental. But I still got annoyed anyway. I'm one tough bitch, aren't I?

"You're getting crumbs on my bed." I said grumpily. And that was that. I wasn't going to tell my partner how scared I was of an Aevis.

You could point a gun at my head and I wouldn't admit it.

In truth, I couldn't get that thing's look out of my head. Acting so... human... it totally freaked me out.
