Chapter 60 - C60: Anomaly

The two heavy Mules fell through the blackness of space, their ablative heat shields already glowing a dull, angry red as they hit the upper thermosphere of the second planet. From the external camera feeds, the descent looked less like a controlled landing and more like we had just thrown two metal bricks into a boiling cauldron. The atmosphere down there was a churning, chaotic mess of sulfuric acid clouds and superheated atmospheric pressure.

On the bridge of the Nomad, the ambient lighting had automatically dimmed, replaced by the harsh, flickering orange light of the primary holotable rendering the planet below. It was a world that clearly didn't want visitors, spinning like a furious, toxic marble. 

"Electromagnetic interference is spiking," Mereel said, his hands tight around his manual flight yoke. His secondary displays were fully locked onto the two heavy lifters. "The automated descent profiles are failing. The atmospheric density changes every five seconds down there. If I let the autopilot handle this, the Mules are going to skip off a thermal updraft and disintegrate before they even see the ground."

"Manual control, then," I said, leaning over the console to watch his telemetry. 

Mereel didn't complain. He just cracked his neck and leaned closer to his monitors. He was remotely flying two separate heavy lifters through a hurricane of boiling sulfuric acid, compensating for wind shear that would have torn a conventional shuttle to pieces. His fingers moved over the tactile controls with a fluid, almost hypnotic rhythm. We were holding a stable, low orbit above the planet, safe from the worst of the gravity wells, but down there, the Mules were taking a beating.

"Mabel, keep an eye on the Mules' ablative shielding," I said, trying to keep my voice steady and calm. We weren't a military outfit, and I had never wanted to act like a strict commander. We were just a group of friends trying not to die out here. "If they lose more than forty percent integrity before touchdown, we abort the drop."

"Shields holding at eighty-two percent," Mabel reported, his eyes narrowed at his tactical display. He tapped a few keys, adjusting the sensor focus. "But they are heating up incredibly fast. External temperature just crossed three hundred degrees Celsius. We are looking at a lot of thermal bleed."

"Almost there," Mereel muttered, his eyes darting between three different altitude readouts. "Come on, you flying bricks... just a little further. Compensating for a massive crosswind in the lower troposphere. Adjusting thruster output to port."

The holotable shifted, showing a wireframe simulation of the Mules fighting a massive lateral gust of wind. For a terrifying second, Mule Two tilted dangerously to the side, its aerodynamic profile slipping. Mereel's hands danced across his console, firing the starboard maneuvering thrusters in short, aggressive bursts to force the heavy lifter back into a stable dive. 

"Touchdown," Mereel breathed out, a wide grin spreading across his face. "Mule One and Mule Two are down in Sector Four. Landing struts locked. They are holding position."

I let out a breath I didn't realize I was holding, leaning back from the console. "Good flying, Mereel."

"Don't thank me yet," he grunted, wiping a bead of sweat from his forehead. "The ground down there is basically half-molten slag. We don't have long before the landing struts start sinking into the crust."

"Archi," I said, turning to the central intelligence core. "Deploy the swarm. Localized thermal-override protocol active. Get us that Tungsten."

"Deployment is commencing," Archi's synthetic voice hummed through the bridge. 

On the holotable, two massive clouds of silver dust erupted from the cargo bays of the Mules. Even scaled down on the holographic projection, it was always an awe-inspiring sight. We had seen the nanites at work dozens of times by now, but the sheer visual impact of billions of microscopic machines moving in perfect unison never got old. They spread out like a liquid wave across the jagged, volcanic crust. 

Normally, they moved like a perfect, synchronized organism, flowing over obstacles and devouring matter in seconds. But down there, fighting against four hundred degrees of ambient heat, their movement was sluggish. The thermal-override protocol was forcing them to dedicate almost all their energy to surviving the heat, rather than replicating or moving quickly. 

"Thermal shielding on the nanites is holding," Judy said from the logistics station, her fingers tapping rhythmically against her desk. "But the swarm's energy reserves are draining fast. They have maybe twenty minutes before their logic gates literally fry."

"Extraction is commencing," Archi announced. Data began streaming down my primary screen in rapid, glowing green lines. The nanites were doing their job, burrowing into the crust, breaking down the raw ore on a molecular level, and separating the pure elements. 

"I'm seeing a massive spike in Tungsten yields," I noted, watching the cargo capacity of the Mules slowly tick upwards. "And there are trace amounts of Rhenium woven directly into the Tungsten veins. That's going to make the alloy for the new shield lenses even stronger."

For the first ten minutes, everything went exactly according to the agonizingly tight parameters we had set. The Mules' cargo holds began to fill with the dense, refined metals we needed to patch the Nomad's shield emitters. We were actually going to pull this off. We were going to get the materials, patch the warp wrapper, and finally head back to the Sol system to see how much the world had changed in the eighteen months we had skipped over.

And then, the holotable flickered.

A massive block of red warning text flashed across my primary monitor, overlaying the extraction data. 

"Archi, what was that?" I asked, stepping closer to the projection, a knot forming in my stomach. "Did we lose a section of the swarm to the heat?"

"Negative, Surgrim. The swarm is completely intact. However, they have encountered a localized extraction failure," Archi replied. His voice lacked its usual immediate certainty. For the first time since I had created him, the highly advanced AI sounded genuinely... confused.

"A failure? Did they hit a thermal pocket they can't handle?"

"No," Archi said slowly, processing the data faster than any human mind could comprehend. "They have encountered a solid mass beneath the crust. Approximately forty meters across. The nanites are attempting to deconstruct it for raw materials, but they are failing."

Judy spun around in her chair, her eyes wide. "Failing? What do you mean failing? They work on a molecular level. They literally pull atoms apart. What could they possibly fail to break down?"

"I am currently analyzing the feedback data from the frontline nanites," Archi said. 

The holotable zoomed in on the mining site, rendering a crude, blocky outline of whatever was buried under the rock. It was perfectly smooth. Unnaturally smooth. The more the sensors tried to penetrate it, the more the image distorted, as if the object itself was actively fighting our scans.

"The molecular bonds of this object are... refusing to separate," Archi explained, the holographic representation spinning slowly in the air between us. "The nanites are applying maximum atomic shear, but the material is completely non-reactive. It is not titanium. It is not tungsten. It does not match any known elemental structure in my database. In fact, it appears to be projecting a localized integrity field."

"An integrity field?" Mereel echoed, looking back at me over his shoulder, his hands still resting lightly on the Mule controls. 

"Affirmative," Archi continued. "A highly advanced energy matrix that locks the molecular structure of the object in place. The nanites cannot physically separate the atoms because the integrity field is actively reinforcing the bonds faster than the swarm can apply shear force. It is an incredibly elegant, yet brute-force method of preservation."

The bridge went dead silent. The only sound was the low hum of the Nomad's life support systems and the distant, synthesized beeping of the Mules' telemetry. 

"Archi," I said, my voice dropping an octave, trying to process the magnitude of what he was saying. "Is it a natural formation? Could it be some weird crystalline structure formed by the heat and pressure?"

The holographic projection of the object pulsed on the table. It wasn't just a rock. The edges were too defined. The curvature was too perfect. Nature didn't build things with exact forty-meter symmetrical radiuses. 

"Negative, Surgrim," Archi replied, his tone chillingly analytical. "Based on the geometric symmetry, the completely unidentifiable metallurgy, and the presence of an active integrity field... this object was manufactured."

I stared at the screen. We were over four point three lightyears from Earth. In a toxic, boiling hellscape that absolutely no human could survive. We had never seen any sign of intelligent life. 

And someone had left something behind.

"Can we bring it up?" Mabel asked, breaking the silence, his tactical mind immediately jumping to asset acquisition. "If we clear the rock around it, can the Mules attach tow cables? We could drag it into orbit."

I looked at the holotable, my mind racing through the possibilities. An alien artifact. Actual, undeniable proof that we weren't alone in the universe, and that whoever was out here possessed technology that made Archi's nanites look like children's toys. The urge to grab it, to tear it open and understand how it worked, was almost overwhelming. 

But I looked at the temperature readouts on the Mules. The external sensors were failing. The nanites were burning out by the millions every second they remained on the surface. We were out of time.

"No," I said, shaking my head slowly. "We can't interact with it. The Mules don't have the lifting capacity to pull a forty-meter solid mass out of a high-gravity well, especially not with their thrusters already redlining from the heat. And we don't even know what that integrity field will do if we try to move it."

"So we just leave it?" Mereel asked, his brow furrowed. "Boss, that's alien tech. That's the holy grail."

"I know it is," I said, forcing myself to look away from the smooth, unyielding shape on the holotable. "But right now, our priority is getting back to the Sol system. We have a broken ship, and we want to go home, and we've been gone for eighteen months. We are not risking the Mules - and our only ticket out of this system - to play archaeologist in a volcano."

Mereel sighed heavily, but he didn't argue. He knew the math as well as I did. 

"Archi, set a persistent navigational marker on those exact coordinates," I ordered. "Save all the telemetry, the feedback data from the nanites, the frequency of the integrity field. Everything. We are going to analyze it later. But right now, we just need the Tungsten."

"Coordinates logged and locked into the secure database," Archi confirmed. "Data archiving is complete. However, I must advise you that the nanite swarm is reaching critical thermal failure. Estimated total collapse in four minutes."

"That's our cue," I said, clapping my hands together once to break the tension on the bridge. "Mereel, recall the swarm. Get the Mules back in the air."

"Copy that," Mereel said, his focus snapping immediately back to his flight controls. 

Down on the surface, the silver tide of the nanites rapidly receded, pouring back into the cargo holds of the Mules like water flowing uphill. They had managed to extract a massive haul of Tungsten and Rhenium, leaving a massive crater in the crust - a crater that perfectly outlined the smooth, untouched surface of the alien artifact they couldn't break. 

"Cargo bays sealed," Judy reported. "We have enough raw materials to forge the new shield lenses three times over."

"Alright, Mules are lifting off," Mereel announced. 

The holotable shifted to show the two heavy lifters struggling against the intense gravity and the violent atmospheric storms. Fire spewed from their primary thrusters as they fought for altitude. The ascent was even more brutal than the descent. The ablative shielding was already compromised, and the thick, toxic clouds were tearing at the superstructures. 

I watched Mereel work, his hands moving in a blur of small, precise adjustments. He was fighting every inch of the atmosphere, surfing the thermal updrafts and dodging the worst of the wind shear. It was a masterclass in remote piloting. 

"Passing the stratosphere," Mabel called out, relief finally seeping into his voice. "Shield integrity is at fourteen percent on Mule One, nine percent on Mule Two. It's close, but they're going to make it."

"I told you," Mereel said, leaning back in his chair with a heavy, exhausted sigh as the two Mules finally broke free of the atmosphere and entered the cold, silent vacuum of space. "Flying bricks. Just gotta know how to throw them."

"Bring them into the primary hangar bays," I said, feeling the adrenaline slowly start to drain out of my system. "Judy, the second they are locked down, route the raw Tungsten directly to the automated foundries. Archi, start the printing process for the new shield emitter lenses."

"Acknowledged," Archi replied. "The foundries are pre-heating. I estimate the manufacturing process will take approximately six hours. Installation and calibration will require another four."

"Ten hours," I muttered, looking out the main viewscreen of the bridge. The toxic, furious planet hung below us, hiding its secrets beneath miles of boiling acid and molten rock. 

We had what we needed. We were going to fix the Nomad, and we were going to go home. 

But as I stared down at the swirling clouds, I couldn't stop thinking about that perfectly smooth, forty-meter object buried in the crust. An object held together by an integrity field that defied everything we knew about physics.
