Chapter 61 - C61: Reverse Engineering

Day 24 in Alpha Centauri System

The automated foundries had been running for six hours straight. Down on the engineering deck, the deep, rhythmic thrum of the heavy nano-printers vibrated through the deck plating, vibrating right up through the soles of my boots. According to Archi's latest projections, we had about four hours left until the new Tungsten-Rhenium shield lenses were finished and ready for installation. 

For the first time since we had dropped out of the warp bubble and discovered our titanium hull was suffering from grade-four micro-fractures, the atmosphere on the Nomad wasn't completely thick with suffocating panic. We had a plan. We had the materials. We were fixing the ship.

I was sitting in the main briefing room just off the bridge, a cup of lukewarm synthetic coffee in my hand. The holotable in the center of the room was displaying the telemetry data we had pulled from the anomaly down on the planet. Next to me, Mereel was leaning back in his chair, his boots propped up on the edge of the console, watching the data streams with a deep frown.

"It doesn't make any sense, Surgrim," Mereel muttered, pointing his stylus at a waveform projection hovering over the table. "Look at the sheer amount of energy the nanites were dumping into that thing. They were applying enough atomic shear to tear apart anything, and the molecular bonds of that smooth rock or whatever it is didn't even vibrate. Nothing in the universe is that tough."

"Because it wasn't just a physical material," I said, rubbing the bridge of my nose, the exhaustion of the last few days finally catching up to me. "It's an active system. Archi, bring up the frequency analysis of the field it was projecting."

The hologram shifted instantly, replacing the object's physical outline with a complex, pulsing web of energy readings. It looked like a tight, vibrating net surrounding the object on a microscopic level. The lines of energy were perfectly symmetrical, weaving in and out of each other in a hypnotic pattern.

"As you can see," Archi's synthesized voice filled the room, calm and analytical, "the artifact is generating a localized, high-frequency electromagnetic field. However, this field is not designed for external deflection, like our plasma shields. It is tuned exactly to the resonant frequency of the object's own molecular structure."

I leaned forward, studying the interlocking waves, trying to wrap my mind around the sheer genius of the engineering. "It's an integrity field. It's essentially acting like a corset for the atoms. The moment our nanites tried to pull a molecule away, the field instantly countered the shear force, locking the atom back into place."

"It is an incredibly elegant application of physics," Archi agreed. "By reinforcing the strong nuclear force at a localized level, the material becomes theoretically unbreakable. It is limited only by the power source generating the field."

Mereel slowly lowered his boots to the floor, his stylus pausing in mid-air. His eyes narrowed as he stared at the hologram. "Wait a second. If it's just an electromagnetic field tuned to a specific molecular frequency... why can't we do that?"

I blinked, looking at Mereel, then back at the hologram. "Do what? Build an alien artifact?"

"No," Mereel said, sitting up straight, the exhaustion suddenly vanishing from his face. "Build an integrity field. Think about it. Why were we down on that toxic hellscape planet in the first place? Because the Nomad's titanium hull can't handle the stress of another warp jump. We're trying to build a hard-light cushion with the deflector shields to stop the ship from snapping in half."

I slowly put my coffee cup down, the gears in my head suddenly clicking into place. "You want to reinforce the hull itself."

"Exactly," Mereel said, stabbing the air with his stylus, pointing at the holotable. "If Archi can figure out the exact resonant frequency of the Nomad's titanium-carbon lattice, couldn't we build our own generators? Just wrap the whole skeletal structure of the ship in our version of that alien field to lock our own molecules together?"

The room went quiet for a moment. "Archi? Is he crazy, or is that actually viable?"

For several seconds, Archi was silent, processing the physics, running billions of structural simulations in the background. 

"Mereel's logic is fundamentally sound," Archi finally responded. "We do not possess the technology, nor the power generation capabilities, to replicate the artifact's perfect molecular stasis. However, we could construct a crude, localized version an Electromagnetic Resonance Amplifier. By running a specific frequency through a grid of superconducting nodes attached directly to the primary titanium framework, we could artificially strengthen the atomic bonds of the hull."

"How much stronger?" I asked, my heart starting to beat a little faster. If this actually worked, it wouldn't just solve our immediate warp problem

"Based on the maximum power output of our primary fusion reactor and the structural limits of our metallurgy," Archi calculated, his voice carrying a note of what almost sounded like synthetic satisfaction, "I estimate an increase in physical durability and tensile stress limits of approximately seventy-four percent."

Mereel let out a long, low whistle. "Seventy-four percent. Are you kidding me? We could fly through a solid debris field and barely scratch the paint."

"We would still need the new shield lenses to cushion the warp bubble," I noted, trying to keep expectations realistic, "but a seventy-four percent structural reinforcement means we wouldn't have to worry about micro-fractures tearing the ship apart mid-transit. It's a massive safety net. We could push the engines harder."

"There is, however, a logistical hurdle," Archi interrupted, flashing a new set of schematics onto the holotable. It showed the Nomad's internal skeleton, overlaid with a network of thick, pulsing cables and generator nodes wrapping around the central spine of the ship. "To generate a field of that magnitude across the entire hull without the circuitry instantly melting from the electrical load, we require a highly efficient superconducting network. The standard copper and synthetic weaves we currently possess will not suffice. They would vaporize within three seconds of activation."

"What do we need?" I asked, already mentally preparing for another disastrous mining operation.

"High-temperature superconductors," Archi stated. "Specifically, significant quantities of Niobium, Neodymium, and Yttrium to forge a Yttrium Barium Copper Oxide or YBCO-class superconducting grid."

Mereel groaned, leaning back in his chair and rubbing his eyes. "Don't tell me. We have to go back down into the acid-volcano to find it."

"Negative," Archi replied, much to Mereel's visible relief. "Those specific rare-earth elements are rarely found in stable concentrations on tectonically violent worlds. The heat and pressure tend to scatter them. However, they are quite common in primordial stellar debris."

The holotable zoomed out from the Nomad, displaying the wider Centauri system. A massive, sweeping ring of rocks and ice orbited the two central stars an asteroid belt, ancient and undisturbed. 

"Sector Four of the local main asteroid belt," Archi highlighted a cluster of large rocks tumbling through the void, about four light-hours away. "Spectroscopic analysis indicates a high concentration of Niobium and Neodymium in several medium-sized S-type asteroids. The Yttrium can be synthesized from trace deposits."

I looked at the projection. No gravity wells. No boiling sulfuric acid. No four-hundred-degree temperatures melting my nanites. Just cold, dead rocks floating in a vacuum. 

"Alright," I said, a genuine smile breaking across my face for the first time in weeks. "That sounds like a much more relaxing mining trip. Mereel, as soon as the foundries finish the shield lenses and we get them installed, set a course for the asteroid belt. Let's go get our shopping list done."

"Cold rocks in zero-G," Mereel said, cracking his knuckles. "Now that's my kind of mining operation. I'll prep the Mules for vacuum-tethering."

I left the briefing room and took the primary elevator down to the engineering deck. If we were going to mine an asteroid field, we were going to need a fully operational nanite swarm, and we had burned out nearly half of our supply down on the planet. I needed to see how the replenishment was going.

When the elevator doors slid open, I found Judy standing over a secondary holographic drafting table, her arms crossed, deeply engrossed in a schematic. She was covered in a thin layer of machine grease a leftover from helping Mabel calibrate the point-defense cannons earlier but she looked entirely in her element. 

"How are the reserves looking?" I asked, stepping up to the table.

Judy glanced up, pushing a stray lock of hair out of her face. "I'm printing a new batch right now. But Surgrim, I've been looking at the feedback logs from the planet drop. The thermal-override patch Archi wrote worked, but it was incredibly inefficient. The nanites were bleeding heat directly into their own logic gates. That's why they burned out so fast."

"It was a rushed patch," I admitted. "Archi had about thirty seconds to figure out how to stop them from melting."

"Right, I know," Judy said, tapping the holotable to bring up a massive, highly detailed 3D model of a single nanite. To the naked eye, they were just silver dust, but magnified a million times, they looked like intricate mechanical spiders. "So, while you guys were upstairs playing with alien integrity fields, Archi and I had a little chat about hardware optimization."

"Oh?" I raised an eyebrow. "You're optimizing my nanites?"

"Someone has to," Judy grinned. She highlighted the outer casing of the microscopic machine. "I realized we were treating the nanites like software, but they are physical machines. I had Archi redesign their outer carapace at the atomic level. We've added a microscopic layer of ablative synthetic diamond-weave to the casing. It barely changes their mass, but it vastly improves their passive thermal dissipation."

"And the software?" I asked, genuinely impressed. 

"I tweaked the routing algorithms," Judy explained, her fingers flying across the console to show the energy flow inside the nanite. "Instead of shutting down replication entirely to fuel the thermal shields, the new algorithm cycles the heat energy. It uses the ambient thermal load from the environment to actually power the replication cycle, while simultaneously venting the excess through the diamond-weave."

"A thermodynamic feedback loop," Archi's voice chimed in from the ceiling speakers. "Judy's modifications have increased the swarm's thermal tolerance by four hundred percent, while only reducing their extraction efficiency by twelve percent. It is a highly robust upgrade. I have already updated the primary blueprints. All newly printed nanites will feature this architecture."

I stared at the schematic, then looked at Judy. She had taken a catastrophic flaw in our primary mining tool and not only fixed it, but turned the hostile environment into a power source for the machines. 

"Judy, that's brilliant," I said, shaking my head in amazement. "If we had these down on the planet, we could have stayed twice as long."

"Well, now we have them for next time," she said, looking quite pleased with herself. "The new batch will be fully printed and loaded into the Mules in three hours."

By the time the new shield lenses were installed and calibrated, the Nomad was ready to move. The sub-light engines flared to life, pushing us away from the toxic planet and out into the vast, empty expanse of the Centauri system. 

The journey to the asteroid belt took just under two days. It was a peaceful transit, a much-needed break from the constant, underlying tension of the previous weeks. 

When we finally arrived, the main viewscreen on the bridge was filled with thousands of slowly tumbling grey rocks, ranging in size from small pebbles to massive, mountain-sized boulders. 

"Matching velocity with the target cluster," Mereel announced from the pilot's seat. "Relative speed is zero. We are parked."

"Deploying Mules," I said. 

This time, the operation was flawless. Without the chaotic wind shear and boiling acid of an atmosphere, the heavy lifters glided silently through the vacuum of space, tethering themselves to a massive S-type asteroid that Archi had identified as rich in Neodymium. 

The newly upgraded nanite swarm deployed in a shimmering, silver cloud. In the zero-gravity environment, they didn't just crawl over the surface; they engulfed the asteroid completely, forming a perfect sphere of microscopic machines around the rock. The diamond-weave casings caught the distant light of the Centauri stars, making the swarm look like a glittering, metallic nebula. 

Extraction was rapid. Without having to fight the environment, the swarm's efficiency skyrocketed. Over the next forty-eight hours, we hopped from asteroid to asteroid, systematically breaking them down and sucking the Niobium, Neodymium, and trace Yttrium into the Mules' cargo bays. It was quiet, methodical, and wonderfully boring. 

By the end of the third day, our holds were packed. 

"That's it," Judy reported from logistics. "We have enough raw materials. Archi, spool up the foundries. We need superconducting cables."

"Archi, feed the structural blueprints directly to the nanites," I ordered, sitting back in the command chair on the bridge. "Have them synthesize the YBCO cables and bond them directly to the primary titanium skeleton."

"Acknowledged," Archi's system interface chimed, seamless and instant. "Allocating sixty percent of the swarm to internal retrofitting. The process will take approximately fourteen hours."

We spent the next day watching the internal sensors light up as the silver dust poured through the walls and maintenance tubes of the ship. The nanites didn't just pull wire; they extruded the superconducting materials on a molecular level, weaving a flawless, unbroken grid of Yttrium Barium Copper Oxide directly into the structural ribs of the Nomad. Every node was perfectly aligned, forming a mathematically precise "corset" that would hold the ship together.

"It's almost eerie watching them work," Judy said, pulling up a live feed from a maintenance shaft camera. The silver tide flowed over a titanium beam, leaving a thick, black superconducting cable in its wake. "They are so much more efficient with the new diamond-weave casing. The thermal exhaust isn't even raising the ambient temperature in the shafts."

"That's because you gave them a proper upgrade," I said, offering her a nod. 

By the fourteenth hour, the last node was synthesized and locked into the central command junction just below the bridge deck. 

"Retrofit complete," Archi announced, his interface pulsing on the main holotable. "Running final diagnostic on the YBCO network... Conductivity is at ninety-nine point nine percent. Node alignment is perfect. The Electromagnetic Resonance Amplifier is ready for activation."

Mereel, Mabel, and Judy gathered around the central console, expectant and completely focused. 

"Alright," I said, looking around at my crew. "Let's see if this actually works. Archi, power up the Integrity Field. Ten percent capacity."

"Activating."

A deep, resonant hum vibrated through the deck plating. It wasn't a sound you could hear with your ears; it was something you felt in your chest. The air in the bridge seemed to thicken for a fraction of a second, a strange, static charge raising the hairs on my arms. 

"Power flowing smoothly," Archi reported. "The YBCO grid is handling the load. The resonant frequency is locking into the titanium-carbon lattice. Structural integrity has already increased by twelve percent."

"Take it to fifty percent," I ordered. 

The hum deepened, vibrating right into my bones. The entire ship seemed to groan, the metal creaking as the electromagnetic field forcefully tightened the molecular bonds of the hull, locking them into a rigid, unbreakable lattice. It felt like the Nomad had suddenly gone from being made of metal, to being carved out of a single, solid diamond. 

"Integrity holding," Judy said, staring at her monitors in awe. "Power draw is stable. We aren't even stressing the reactor."

"Take it to maximum," I said, a grin spreading across my face. 

The hum stabilized into a constant, barely perceptible vibration. 

"Maximum resonance achieved," Archi announced. "Structural integrity has increased by seventy-four point two percent. Tensile stress limits are vastly exceeding original design specifications. The Nomad is now operating under an active Integrity Field."

Mereel slapped the console in front of him, letting out a loud whoop of victory. "Yes! Try breaking that, you stupid universe!"

I leaned back in my chair, looking out the viewscreen at the distant stars. We had taken alien technology, reverse-engineered the core concept, and built a shield that made our ship practically indestructible. 

"Alright," I said, feeling a surge of confidence I hadn't felt in months. "The hull is secure. The warp lenses are patched. Mereel, lay in a course. It's time to go home."
