“Do you feel burdened by its revelation?”
I felt my body freeze as the question fell from Saoirse’s lips. It was obvious from her tone and words that she had overheard a part of my meeting with Axureon. I wondered how much she heard. Her tone didn’t sound angry. It was almost resigned.
I turned so I was facing her, looking down into her beautiful face. Her bright green eyes looked up at me with that fierce determination I’d come to love so much. She clearly wasn’t afraid. Of course, she wasn’t. She was the bravest person I had ever come to know.
I feared it would be her downfall one day. I couldn’t bear to ever witness that.
“I wouldn’t say that I feel burdened by it,” I told her gently. “I was born into this position of carrying the burden of my kingdom. I am much more concerned about you for that reason.”
I expected her to nod in understanding, but her thin eyebrows just furrowed with confusion. “I’m afraid I don’t understand what you mean,” she said finally.
