Ever since he learned his sister was sending him home, Chester Sawyer had been having nightmares of his father beckoning to him.

Keston had entered its plum rain season, and the damp, muggy heat made everyone more irritable.
The days flew by, and soon it was time for Sydney Sawyer to return to school. She sent Chester home two days early, which happened to coincide with the day the college entrance exam scores were released.
"Sis, you have to stay for dinner tonight."
"Why?"
"The college entrance exam scores can be checked this afternoon."
"You were accepted early, so why do you still care about the score?"
"I don't care, but Dad does. If you leave, you'll have to visit my grave next year."
