Chapter 28 - Joining?

"Y-You're the girl that wanted to kill me!!" Phina pointed aggressively to the Vice Captain.

"Excuse you?" Vice Captain Samantha barely looked up from the papers on her desk.

"You're the girl that tried to kill me a few days ago!" Phina was held back by William.

"Do you have any idea how busy I am?" Samantha continued with her paperwork. She spoke in monotone, "I have no time to take a shit, let alone go around the city trying to kill a mere High-leveled Intermediate-ranked brat. If I wanted you dead, you'd have been dead for a week."

"Seraphina! Calm down!!" William tried to hold her back with a Full Nelson. 'Shit!! Why did she start going crazy now?!'

"Acuter, what do you want from me?" the Vice Captain sighed before she put down her pen and looked at William.

"Ma'am, I...calm down!!" William kept trying to hold Phina back.

"Enough, child." Samantha looked to Phina as she released some pressure that stiffened Phina's entire body.

'Her Battle Intent is insane!! What the hell kind of control is that?!' William felt a chill down his spine.

'I...I'm going to die!!' Phina's mind raced as she looked for a way to escape from the office. Her entire body couldn't move.

"Speak, Acuter." Samantha rested her chin on her hands.

"Well...Your Ladyship...my friend here wants to talk to you." William said as he saw how much Phina struggled to escape, meanwhile, he just felt a breeze.

"Speak, girl." she shifted her eyes to the paralyzed Phina, her pressure lightly decreasing.

Fear set into Phina's mind as she looked into Vice Captain Samantha's eyes. She looked at her very short hair covering her left eye slightly, her right eye sending a cold feeling throughout her soul. Her pitch black hair contrasted her bright blue eyes. Her face scarred from obvious battles.

"Your right eye...I slashed it...how did you...?" Phina realized.

"So you were the one who blinded Rema's eye." realization flashed through her eyes. She lifted her head off her chin and leaned back. She put one leg over the other and asked, "So, what do you want from me?"

"Rema...yeah...that was her name." Phina was so confused. Samantha looked exactly like Rema except for the shorter hair and the scarred eye. "W-Who are you?"

"My name is Samantha Virgile, the Vice Captain of the 8th Squad in the Tortoise Army." Samantha sighed. "The girl you are talking about is my daughter, Rema Sparks. Rema is an assassin in the Sparks family. You probably messed with the Sparks family before she attacked you, correct?"

Phina was stunned. Samantha looked to be about 20 years of age...Rema looked at least 16 years of age. "H-How is this possible?! How old are you?!?"

"I am 39 this year." Samantha said clearly and quickly, as if this answer was drilled into her.

"H-HOW?!?!" Phina almost lost her mind! How was it possible for this woman that looked even younger than her to be almost double her age?!

"I don't have time to explain to you the basics of Life Energy, what do you want from me?" Samantha looked at William with an annoyed glare.

"R-Right!" Phina suddenly remembered why she was here. "I want to ask if you have an Enforcer with the name of Seraphina Ender!"

"Isn't that your name?" Samantha asked in confusion. "You know what? Forget it, I don't have time for the details. Give me a second to check."

The Vice Captain suddenly opened a small box that was in one of her drawers. She then frowned slightly, "We have no soldier with such a name in the Enforcers' Exodia."

Phina's entire body went cold. She then asked in a soft tone, "C-Can you check again?"

Samantha looked at her with a deep frown, "I have alrea-"

"Please." Phina's voice cracked as she asked again. "There must be something...anything..."

"..." Samantha was silent as she looked at Phina. Her Synchronicity Rate in Emotion Laws was in no way anywhere near William's, but at the end of the day, she was still a Peak-level Expert-ranked fighter. Anyone at the Peak-level of the Beginner-rank could feel such chaotic World Energy movement, it was very obvious she was distraught. "Who are you? And why do you insist on there being such an Enforcer?"

"I-I'm..." Phina started slightly sobbing. "I was...sob...at th-"

Whoosh!

Phina immediately stopped sobbing as she retreated from Samantha with wide eyes filled with fear.

"Your skills are subpar at best, but your instincts are on another level. Not just anyone could retreat from my Killing Intent at a speed such as yours." Samantha's eyes flashed with interest.

"I-I woke up in a nest in t-the forest near the city...a-and I don't remember anything before that. When I w-woke up...I was wearing a tattered Enforcer uniform." Phina still stuttered as she spoke. "A-All I remember is that my name is Seraphina Ender, and that I have to get to the C-Core as soon as possible."

Samantha's eyes widened. "You know about the Core?!"

"I don't know...WHAT it is...I just know that I have to get there." Phina sighed in helplessness.

'She must've been executed for obtaining information without clearance!' Samantha's mind raced with possibilities. 'I could get the 8th Squad a huge advantage if I could get someone with her talent re-recruited. If she was really executed for that, she wouldn't be stupid enough to come back here. To think William brought me such a treasure!'

"I just want to know something..." a tear fell down Phina's face.

"Why is that important?" Samantha asked.

"W-What?" Phina was stunned once more. She was not used to being near people as straightforward and right to the point as the Vice Captain was.

"Why is it so important that you know about your past? Wouldn't it make sense to pay attention to reaching the Core, whatever it is?" Samantha asked with a smile. Yet, her smile was betrayed by the Emotional Laws around her.

'She's nervous...she wants her to do something.' William narrowed his eyes at Samantha. He liked this Vice Captain precisely because of how honest she was, yet here she was trying to manipulate someone.

"I..." Phina was at a loss for words.

"Look here, Seraphina." Samantha smiled kindly. "You obviously weren't an Enforcer since your data is not in the system. So, how about joining the Enforcers' Exodia? It will train you to achieve your goals, while also sending you to different parts of the world. Who knows? Maybe you'll remember something during one of your assignments. What do you say?"
