After surviving two whirlpool crises, Charles didn't dare let his guard down for a moment. Not only did he have bats constantly scouting the skies, but he also had the sailors test the ship's speed at all times.
Yet even with Charles so alert, the Narwhal still had several close calls.
This stretch of sea was teeming with unpredictable whirlpools. Nobody knew their patterns or when they might suddenly appear.
Fortunately, they were not far from the island now.
As Charles slept, his eyeballs darted beneath his closed eyelids. He was dreaming, and from the deep furrow of his brow, it wasn't a pleasant one.
Suddenly, an exclamation rang out nearby. Charles's eyes snapped open and he leaped from his hammock, rushing toward Deep at the helm. "What happened? Is there another whirlpool?"
"Captain, I can't see clearly—is that an island over there?"
Charles narrowed his eyes, staring into the farthest reach of the searchlight.
