The manager would provide opportunities for that person with potential to rise higher so that such a person could become a valuable member of the team to support the company and them to reach greater heights.
It would not be done so that such a person would choose to ignore all that had been done for them, only to help benefit someone else in another position in the company, or for them to one day leave to benefit another company.
From the position of the manager, it would be like they had invested so much into that person only to have it all thrown back in their face.
Perhaps they could have chosen someone else who could have been more reliable and grateful for those opportunities that would have been granted to them, rather than a person who would end up taking advantage of them only to show ingratitude.
Nobody wanted to feel like they had been taken advantage of, especially when they were in a position like the one Ross was in.
