-------------------------------------------------

The forest felt alive.

More alive than it had ever felt before.

Bella stood motionless atop the branch of a massive pine tree, staring out across the endless wilderness surrounding Forks.

The transformation was complete.

Every sensation crashed into her at once.

The sound of rain striking leaves miles away.

The heartbeat of animals hidden deep beneath the undergrowth.

The movement of insects crawling beneath bark.

The scent of wet earth.

The scent of pine.

The scent of distant rivers.

Everything.

It was overwhelming. Beautiful. Terrifying.

Bella slowly inhaled.

"...."

Not because she needed air.

Out of habit.

And with that single breath, thousands of scents flooded her awareness.

Her eyes widened.

Far away she could hear voices.

Not nearby voices. Distant ones.

The conversation inside the Cullen mansion.

Charlie speaking to Jojo.

Emmett laughing seeing her father's reaction.

Alice teasing someone.

Every word reached her ears with crystal clarity.

Bella blinked in astonishment.

"I can hear them..."

Her own voice sounded different now.

Clearer.

Stronger.

Then another scent reached her.

One she recognized immediately.

Edward.

Before she could even turn—He appeared.

Standing silently on a nearby branch.

Watching her.

For several seconds neither spoke.

They simply looked at one another.

Then Bella smiled. A genuine smile.

"...."

And launched herself toward him.

Unfortunately—Bella had forgotten one important detail.

She was no longer human.

The newborn vampire collided with Edward like a speeding truck.

"Edward!"

The impact sent both of them flying.

Branches exploded around them.

Trees snapped apart.

One unfortunate pine tree didn't even survive half a second before being uprooted entirely.

Bella and Edward crashed through the forest together before finally coming to a stop in a pile of broken timber.

For a moment there was silence.

"...."

"...."

"...."

Then Bella groaned.

"Oh."

Edward laughed seeing her reaction.

Actually laughed.

A sound Bella hadn't heard nearly enough.

"Welcome to being a newborn."

Bella looked around at the destruction.

Several trees lay broken behind them.

"...I did that?"

Edward nodded his head.

-Nod!

Bella stared at the destruction she had caused.

Then looked at her hands.

"...."

"...."

Then back at the trees.

Then back at her hands.

"...Wow."

The next several hours passed beneath Edward's patient guidance.

He taught her how to move.

How to jump.

How to control her strength.

At first Bella struggled.

A lot.

Every movement carried too much force.

Every step launched her further than intended.

Every touch risked breaking something.

But gradually—She adapted. Which is very good for a new born cold one.

Bella learned quickly.

Much faster than Edward expected.

Perhaps because she had spent so many years around supernatural beings already.

Or perhaps because Bella Swan had always been stubborn.

And finally got her wish.

Eventually they stood atop another ridge overlooking the forest.

Edward watched her carefully.

"There's one more thing."

Bella immediately knew what he meant.

The thirst.

The burning sensation lingering at the back of her throat.

She had noticed it since waking.

Not painful.

Yet impossible to ignore.

Edward gently nodded toward the deeper forest.

"Hunting."

Bella hesitated. Then followed.

"...."

The hunting grounds weren't far.

Soon they located a small herd of deer moving through the wilderness.

Bella immediately noticed something strange.

The scent.

It smelled... Good.

Very good.

The realization startled her.

For a moment her human instincts resisted.

These were animals.

Beautiful creatures. Innocent creatures.

Yet the scent continued pulling at her.

Edward noticed the conflict.

"It's okay."

Bella looked at him.

"The first hunt is difficult for everyone."

Then he demonstrated.

Moving silently through the forest before taking down one of the deer with practiced efficiency.

The animal barely realized what happened.

Bella watched carefully.

Then Edward drank.

Not savagely. Not violently.

Simply feeding.

When he finished, he looked toward her.

The unspoken encouragement was obvious.

Bella swallowed looking at the blood.

Then focused on another deer.

The scent struck her again.

Stronger.

The thirst immediately intensified.

Her instincts surged forward.

For a brief moment she stopped thinking.

She moved.

The deer never stood a chance.

One second it was grazing.

The next Bella had already caught it.

When everything settled, she found herself staring down at the animal.

Her reservations returned.

Briefly.

Then the scent reached her again.

And instinct won.

Bella followed Edward's earlier example.

The first taste surprised her.

Warm.

Rich.

Far better than she had imagined.

The burning thirst immediately began fading.

She drank again. Then again.

And with each mouthful the resistance weakened.

The animal blood tasted far better than she had expected.

By the time she finished, the thirst had quieted significantly.

Bella slowly stood.

Looking down at the empty carcass.

Then at Edward.

A guilty expression crossed her face.

Followed by confusion. Then surprise.

"I liked it."

Edward smiled knowingly.

Every vampire had that realization eventually.

Bella looked toward the moonlit forest surrounding them.

Her hearing sharper.

Her vision clearer.

Her body stronger.

The entire world seemed different now.

Not because the world had changed.

Because she had.

And for the first time since her transformation began—Bella felt truly alive.

With the worst of her thirst finally satisfied, everything changed.

The burning sensation that had dominated Bella's thoughts since waking faded into the background, allowing her to truly experience what she had become.

The forest no longer felt like a place.

It felt like a playground.

A vast, endless playground stretching beneath the moonlit sky.

Bella stood atop the highest branch of a towering pine tree, her hair dancing in the cold wind as she stared across the forests surrounding Forks.

Miles of wilderness.

Every leaf.

Every animal.

Every drop of rain lingering on branches.

She could see it all.

The world had never been this beautiful.

Then a familiar voice reached her ears.

"Thinking about jumping?"

Bella turned.

Edward stood on a neighboring tree branch with an amused expression.

She grinned.

"Maybe."

Edward raised an eyebrow.

"Maybe?"

Bella's smile widened.

Then she jumped.

The branch exploded beneath her feet.

Edward immediately burst out laughing.

Bella sailed through the air before landing perfectly on another tree hundreds of feet away.

For a moment she simply stood there.

Then she started laughing too.

The sound echoed through the night forest.

"I can't believe this!"

Her eyes sparkled with excitement.

Edward landed beside her.

"You get used to it."

Bella immediately shook her head.

"No."

She pointed around them.

"No one gets used to this."

Then she vanished.

Edward blinked.

Bella had already launched herself away.

The newborn vampire raced through the forest with a huge smile on her face.

The wind whipped through her hair as she bounded from tree to tree.

Every leap carried her farther.

Every landing felt effortless.

Behind her, Edward followed.

Not because he needed to.

Because he wanted to.

For months he had watched Bella suffer.

Watched her body weaken.

Watched her hover between life and death.

Now—

For the first time in a long while—

She looked genuinely happy.

Bella landed atop a fallen log and immediately pointed toward him.

"Race you."

Edward folded his arms.

"That's hardly fair."

Bella narrowed her eyes.

"You think I'll lose?"

"No."

Edward smiled.

"I think you'll cheat."

Bella gasped dramatically.

Then she threw a pinecone at him.

The pinecone never reached its target.

Edward caught it effortlessly.

Unfortunately for him—

Bella was already gone.

The newborn had used the distraction to take off running.

Edward stared for a moment.

Then laughed.

"Bella!"

He shot after her.

The chase began.

Two vampires tore through the forests of Forks at incredible speed.

Leaping over rivers.

Running across fallen trees.

Bounding between cliffs and branches.

At one point Bella jumped across a wide ravine simply because she could.

Then immediately turned around and jumped back.

Edward eventually caught up near a rocky outcrop overlooking the forest.

Or rather—He almost caught her.

Bella dodged at the last second.

Edward missed.

The two crashed through several trees together while laughing.

For anyone watching from afar, they would have looked less like immortal predators and more like children discovering a playground for the first time.

Which, in a way, they were.

Especially Bella.

Every few minutes she discovered something new.

How far she could jump.

How quickly she could climb.

How accurately she could hear distant sounds.

At one point she became fascinated by listening to conversations occurring miles away.

At another she spent nearly ten minutes trying to outrun a mountain lion just to see if she could.

She could. Very easily.

Edward spent most of the night making sure their route never brought them close to any humans.

Each time he detected campers, late-night drivers, or hikers in the distance, he casually redirected their path deeper into the wilderness.

Bella barely noticed.

She was too busy enjoying herself.

Eventually they ended up atop a cliff overlooking the moonlit forest.

The chase finally slowed.

Bella stood near the edge staring across the landscape.

Her eyes reflected the moonlight beautifully.

Edward approached quietly and wrapped an arm around her waist.

This time Bella remembered her strength.

Neither of them went crashing through a mountain.

Progress.

For several minutes they simply stood together.

Watching the endless forest.

Listening to the sounds of the night.

Bella leaned against him.

"Everything is so different."

Edward smiled softly.

"Is that a bad thing?"

Bella thought about it.

About Charlie.

About Renesmee.

About the Cullens.

About the impossible life she now lived.

Then she shook her head.

"No."

A smile appeared on her face.

"Not really."

Far away, beyond the trees and mountains, dawn was still hours away.

And for the first time since becoming a Cold One—Bella wasn't afraid of the future.

She was excited for it.
