The sky was beginning to brighten faintly on the horizon when Bella and Edward finally slowed their pace.

Hours had passed since Bella's awakening.

Hours spent hunting.

Learning.

Running through the forests surrounding Forks.

And most importantly—Learning control.

Edward had been observing her carefully the entire night.

Every reaction.

Every scent she encountered.

Every moment her instincts surfaced.

Bella had performed far better than anyone expected.

Far better than most newborn vampires.

Yet Edward remained cautious.

Because Bella wasn't just a newborn.

She was also a mother.

And that complicated everything.

The couple stood atop a rocky ridge overlooking the forest while dawn slowly approached.

Edward finally broke the comfortable silence.

"We should head back."

Bella nodded.

"Charlie is probably having a nervous breakdown by now."

Edward actually laughed.

"That's a reasonable assumption."

Bella smiled.

Then her expression softened.

"Renesmee."

The name alone changed her entire demeanor.

Edward noticed immediately.

He always did.

His smile faded slightly.

"Bella..."

She looked at him.

The hesitation in his voice instantly caught her attention.

"What?"

Edward took a moment before answering.

Because he knew she wasn't going to like this.

Not even a little.

"When we get back..."

Bella's eyes narrowed slightly.

"...yes?"

Edward sighed.

"I don't think you should be near Renesmee yet."

The atmosphere changed immediately.

Not dramatically.

Subtly.

But Edward felt it.

Bella froze.

Her expression became perfectly still.

Too still.

The kind of stillness predators displayed before deciding whether something was a threat.

Edward immediately knew this conversation was about to become difficult.

"Bella..."

She interrupted him.

"No."

Edward blinked.

The response had come too quickly.

Too instinctively.

Bella herself seemed surprised by how fast she had answered.

Yet the feeling remained.

Strong.

Powerful.

Protective.

"No?"

Edward repeated carefully.

Bella folded her arms.

"She's my daughter."

Edward nodded.

"I know."

"I carried her."

Another nod.

"I know."

"I nearly died for her."

Edward sighed.

"I definitely know."

Bella took a step forward.

"And now you want me to stay away from her?"

Her golden eyes locked onto his.

Edward could practically see the possessiveness surfacing.

A side of Bella that had always existed beneath the surface but had become magnified after her transformation.

The instinct to protect.

To claim.

To guard what was hers.

And Renesmee was absolutely hers.

Bella realized it too.

Which only made her more frustrated.

"Edward."

Her voice lowered slightly.

"She's my baby."

The statement carried enough emotion to make Edward pause.

Because he understood.

He truly did.

If their positions were reversed, he wouldn't react any differently.

Possibly worse.

Much worse.

Edward moved closer.

"I'm not trying to keep you away from her."

Bella didn't look convinced.

"I'm trying to make sure nothing happens."

The newborn vampire fell silent.

Edward continued gently.

"You've done incredibly well tonight."

Bella listened.

"You have more control than most newborns."

Another pause.

"But Renesmee..."

His gaze softened.

"...is different."

Bella's expression shifted slightly.

Not angry anymore.

Conflicted.

Because she understood the concern.

Even if she hated it.

Edward continued.

"One accident."

The words landed heavily.

"One mistake."

Bella immediately looked away.

Because she knew he was right.

The thought alone horrified her.

Edward stepped closer.

"You've only been awake a few hours."

The newborn vampire remained silent.

"I just want a little time."

Bella sighed heavily.

For several moments she stared toward the distant Cullen mansion.

Toward her daughter.

Toward her family.

Then she finally spoke.

Quietly.

Reluctantly.

"...How long?"

Edward visibly relaxed.

Not because he had won.

Because she was listening.

"A few days."

Bella immediately frowned.

"No."

Edward laughed.

"Bella."

"One day."

Edward shook his head.

"Bella."

"Two."

"Bella."

She glared at him.

A surprisingly intimidating glare for someone who had been a vampire for less than a day.

Edward couldn't help smiling.

Eventually Bella crossed her arms and huffed.

A very human gesture.

Which somehow made the situation even more amusing.

"Fine."

She didn't sound fine.

Not remotely.

Edward slipped an arm around her shoulders.

"You can still see her."

Bella immediately looked interested.

"Really?"

"From a safe distance."

The interest vanished.

"That's not the same thing."

Edward chuckled.

"No."

"It isn't."

Bella sighed dramatically.

Then leaned against him.

The possessiveness hadn't disappeared.

Not even close.

But now she understood it.

Recognized it.

And more importantly—Controlled it.

Which was exactly what Edward had been hoping for.

Together they turned toward home.

Toward their family.

And toward Charlie Swan.

Who was undoubtedly about to have another very confusing morning.

The return to the Cullen mansion was far quieter than the night that had preceded it.

The first hints of dawn were beginning to brighten the horizon, painting the clouds above Forks in shades of silver and pale blue.

Edward and Bella moved through the forest side by side.

Unlike earlier, Bella wasn't running.

Wasn't jumping between trees.

Wasn't testing her newfound strength.

Her attention was fixed on something else entirely.

Someone else.

Renesmee.

And Charlie.

She had known her father was inside the mansion the entire time.

With her new hearing, she had been able to hear his voice from miles away.

Every conversation.

Every joke.

Every question.

But hearing him and seeing him were two completely different things.

As the Cullen mansion came into view through the trees, Bella's pace slowed.

For the first time since her transformation, nervousness appeared on her face.

Edward noticed immediately.

"You okay?"

Bella nodded automatically.

Then shook her head.

Then nodded again.

"I don't know."

Edward smiled faintly.

"That's normal."

Bella stared toward the mansion windows.

Through them she could already hear Charlie's heartbeat.

Strong.

Steady.

Familiar.

And another sound.

Much smaller.

Renesmee.

The sound instantly captured her attention.

Her entire body tensed.

The possessive instincts she had discovered earlier immediately surfaced again.

Her daughter.

The thought alone was enough to make her want to rush inside.

Edward gently touched her arm.

A silent reminder.

Control.

Bella took a deep breath out of habit.

Then nodded.

Together they entered the house.

Inside, the conversation stopped almost immediately.

Every eye turned toward the entrance.

Charlie was sitting on the couch.

And in his arms—

Was Renesmee.

The world seemed to stop.

Bella froze.

Completely.

The newborn vampire stood motionless near the doorway.

Not because she was afraid.

Because she was overwhelmed.

For the first time she was seeing them together.

Her father.

Her daughter.

The two people she loved most in the world.

Charlie looked up.

And for several seconds neither spoke.

The sheriff simply stared at his daughter.

Bella stared back.

The transformation had made her more beautiful than ever.

Her skin shimmered like marble.

Her eyes glowed gold.

Every movement carried unnatural grace.

Yet despite all of that—

Charlie still saw Bella.

His daughter.

The little girl who used to trip over her own feet.

The teenager who constantly worried him.

The young woman who somehow managed to turn his life upside down every few months.

Neither noticed the tears in Charlie's eyes.

Neither noticed the room.

Then Bella took a step forward.

Instinctively.

Toward Renesmee.

Toward Charlie.

And immediately two figures moved.

Edward.

And Emmett.

Bella stopped.

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

Not angry.

Protective.

Which was somehow more dangerous.

Emmett immediately raised both hands.

"Easy."

Bella looked unimpressed.

Edward sighed.

"We talked about this."

"I know."

Bella's voice remained calm.

Too calm.

"I just want to hold her."

Emmett looked toward Edward.

"See? That's exactly what you said she'd say."

Bella shot him a glare.

Emmett immediately took a step backward.

"Just making observations."

Charlie looked between all of them in confusion.

Then toward Bella.

Then toward Renesmee.

Then back again.

Finally Edward stepped forward.

"Bella."

His voice softened.

"We know you can control yourself."

The newborn vampire remained silent.

"But you're still adapting."

Charlie slowly began understanding where this was going.

His expression became more serious.

Carlisle moved beside him.

"Newborn instincts can be unpredictable."

Charlie instinctively tightened his hold on Renesmee.

Not out of distrust.

Out of caution.

Bella noticed immediately.

The reaction hurt more than she expected.

Charlie saw it.

And immediately regretted it.

"Damn it."

The sheriff sighed heavily.

"That's not what I meant."

Bella looked at him.

Charlie shook his head.

"You're my daughter."

The simple statement softened her expression instantly.

The room became quiet.

Charlie carefully looked down at Renesmee.

Then back at Bella.

Then toward Edward.

Eventually he nodded.

"So let me get this straight."

Everyone listened.

"For a little while..."

Charlie pointed at the baby.

"...I'm babysitting my granddaughter."

Then pointed toward Bella.

"...because my daughter is temporarily too vampire to hold her safely."

Silence.

Then Emmett burst out laughing.

Rosalie immediately joined him.

Alice nearly fell off the couch.

Even Jojo had to look away to hide his smile.

Bella groaned.

Edward buried his face in one hand.

Charlie pointed again.

"That's what we're saying, right?"

Carlisle adjusted his glasses.

"...when you phrase it that way, yes."

The room erupted into laughter.

Even Bella couldn't stop a reluctant smile from appearing.

Charlie shook his head.

"This family is insane."

Then he looked at Renesmee sleeping peacefully in his arms.

His expression softened.

"But..."

He glanced back toward Bella.

"...I'll help."

Bella's eyes widened slightly.

Charlie nodded.

"You need time."

The sheriff shifted Renesmee carefully.

"And until then, I'll help take care of her."

Bella smiled.

A genuine one.

The first truly relaxed smile Charlie had seen since she entered the room.

Then Charlie immediately pointed a finger at everyone.

"Under supervision."

The room blinked.

"What?" Emmett asked.

Charlie folded his arms.

"If monsters, vampire councils, lightning scientists, stitched abominations, and flaming skeletons are all apparently real..."

His gaze landed directly on Jojo.

"...I'm not taking any chances anymore."

Jojo looked away innocently.

Which only made Charlie more suspicious.

And somewhere in the room, Alice started laughing all over again.
