I shook my head. "There was a monster inside the lake. We fought it to protect your people."
He leaned back on his throne. "So you say. My men who were sent to investigate but found no monster."
Eumhun took a deep breath. "That's because it's a creature of the Abyss. They disappear after being killed, leaving no trace behind. Not that we managed to kill it. It was taken by its owner, Reginald."
The Sultan's eyes narrowed, a flicker of something—perhaps surprise, perhaps annoyance—in their depths. "The Abyss? What fairy tale is this?"
"It's no fairy tale," I said, my voice firm. "It is a very real and very dangerous threat. A threat that is coming for all of us."
He chuckled again, a dry, humorless sound. "Us or just you, Daughter of the Tyrant Queen?"
I had to bite my tongue. My mother's misdeeds were still following me. But... my mother wasn't the only tyrant on the continent.
