"Mine?" Vera asked.
"Yes!" he said with a laugh. "Didn't you notice that a photograph was missing from your album?"
"You mean..." Vera stared at his face. "This photo... you took it from my album?"
"Very smart!" Kris Cooper gently stroked the photo in his wallet. "You looked so cute when you were a child, so I took it and put it in my wallet so I could see you anytime."
Since she had lost her memory, she certainly wouldn't remember what photos were in the album. Kris had quickly fabricated this excuse to placate her.
Watching the man's smiling face, Vera felt her heart clench as if pierced by a knife.
He's lying! He's lying to her! She'd seen this photo long before she ever met him. This isn't her photo at all. He's covering something up; he doesn't want her to know the truth...
"I didn't expect you to find out," Kris said, gently pinching her cheek. "If you don't like this one, we can swap it. You can pick out a really pretty one yourself, okay?"
