Chapter 141 - Before Dawn

The bayou was still dark when Francesca Guerrera gathered her pack.

Mist drifted between the trees, clinging to the roots and covering the narrow path that led to an abandoned hunting lodge. The building had once belonged to a family of hunters who had disappeared decades earlier. Now its broken windows and rotting porch provided shelter for wolves who preferred to keep their business away from the city.

Francesca stood beneath a crooked oak, dressed in black, her expression unreadable. Around her, members of the Guerrera pack checked their weapons, tightened their coats, and whispered among themselves. A few wore their moon rings openly. Others kept them beneath gloves, as though concealing the objects might conceal the danger that came with them.

The rings had changed everything.

For generations, the Guerreras had been bound to the moon, forced to endure the agony of transformation and wait for the right conditions to reclaim their wolf forms. Now they could shift whenever they pleased. Their new freedom had made them stronger, but it had also made them dependent on the woman who had provided it.

Francesca disliked that part.

She understood power. She understood bargains, threats, and the price of survival. What she did not appreciate was being treated like a piece on someone else's board.

A man approached her with a leather satchel held tightly against his side. Two others followed, carrying a small iron case wrapped in dark cloth.

"The storage site is clear," he reported. "The records are there, along with the artifact. We can be in and out before sunrise."

Francesca looked at the satchel. "The records are to be destroyed. Every page, every name, every reference to the people who supplied us with the rings. The artifact comes with us intact. Nobody opens the case, and nobody decides to keep a souvenir."

One of the younger wolves shifted uneasily. "If the Mikaelsons find out we're involved, this won't end with a warning."

A few heads turned toward him. Francesca let the silence settle before she answered.

"The Mikaelsons already know someone is moving against them. That is why we are doing this quickly. We are not marching into their home, and we are not challenging Viktor Mikaelson to a fight. We take what we came for, erase the trail, and leave the city with our throats still attached."

She stepped closer to the young wolf, her voice dropping.

"Those rings give us an advantage. They do not make us invincible. Never confuse the two."

The wolf lowered his gaze.

Francesca turned back to the group. Their orders were simple, and she intended to keep them that way. Retrieve the artifact, burn the records, and leave no witnesses who could identify the people behind the operation. If someone stood between them and the objective, that person would become part of the cost.

Still, one detail troubled her. Seraphine Duval had been unusually specific about the timing. The woman had given them resources, information, and enough freedom to operate without constant supervision, but she never explained more than was necessary. Francesca had learned that every generous offer from Seraphine carried an invisible string.

A messenger arrived carrying a sealed envelope.

Francesca broke the seal and read the short note inside. Her eyes narrowed.

"Change of route," she announced. "We move now. The main team takes the eastern trail, while the scouts circle the storage site and watch for anyone following us. If the city wakes up before we're finished, we leave the records behind and protect the artifact."

The pack began to move.

Francesca remained beneath the oak for another moment, watching the moon rings catch the faint light filtering through the branches. Seraphine had promised her a future in which the Guerreras would never again have to bow to the moon or beg another supernatural faction for respect.

Francesca intended to claim that future.

She simply had no intention of letting Seraphine own it.

---

At the Mikaelson compound, dawn had not yet arrived, but the family was already awake.

Viktor stood at the head of the long table in the study, listening as Seline's report was reviewed. A map of New Orleans lay open before him, marked with locations connected to Seraphine's known contacts. Freya had added several symbols in the margins, identifying places where magical activity had surfaced during the past few weeks.

Klaus leaned against the fireplace, restless energy radiating from him. Elijah stood beside the table with his hands folded behind his back, studying the map with the measured attention of a man who preferred to understand a problem before tearing it apart.

Malia sat near the window, watching the streets below. Damon and Katherine had arrived together, both looking considerably healthier than they had any right to after their recent deaths. Stefan stood beside them, his expression serious.

"The Guerreras have been gathering outside the city," Elijah said. "Their movements suggest preparation rather than a direct assault. They have been careful to avoid drawing attention, which makes their sudden activity more interesting."

Klaus gave a humorless smile. "A pack of wolves wearing enchanted jewelry thinks it can conduct business in our backyard without consequences. I would almost admire the ambition if it weren't so irritating."

"The rings are the important part," Freya said. She placed a small sketch beside the map. "If Seraphine can grant werewolves control over their transformations, she has access to a form of magic worth investigating. I want one of those rings intact, preferably before anyone decides to tear it apart."

"Then we'll bring you one," Damon said. "Katherine and I can follow the pack. We're both familiar with the sort of people who believe a little power makes them untouchable."

Katherine glanced at him. "Speak for yourself. I have never needed a magic ring to make people regret crossing me."

"Your modesty remains inspiring."

She gave him a thin smile, then turned toward Viktor. "Jokes aside, we can move through the city without announcing ourselves. If the Guerreras are collecting something for Seraphine, we can find out where they're taking it."

Viktor listened without interrupting. He had no sentimental attachment to the wolves, nor any particular interest in keeping them alive. If they became an obstacle, he would remove them. The only question worth answering was whether killing them would bring him closer to Seraphine or merely clear the board of pieces she no longer needed.

"Take Stefan with you," he said. "Find the pack and identify their objective. If they resist, deal with them. I have no use for prisoners who cannot provide anything valuable, and I won't have you risking yourselves to preserve the lives of people who chose to stand against us."

Stefan nodded, accepting the order without argument. Damon pushed away from the table, while Katherine adjusted the sleeves of her jacket.

Klaus straightened from the fireplace. "I'll join them. If Francesca is foolish enough to believe she can hide behind a moon ring, I'd enjoy correcting that misconception personally."

"You'll do no such thing," Elijah replied, his tone calm but firm. "Your presence will turn a discreet investigation into a declaration of war. We have yet to establish whether Francesca is acting on her own initiative or following Seraphine's instructions."

Klaus's eyes hardened. "And while we stand here discussing the finer points of diplomacy, they continue to move against us."

"Let them move," Viktor said.

The room fell quiet.

He placed one finger on the map, directly over the cluster of marks representing Seraphine's network.

"Seraphine has spent centuries surviving by making other people take the risks she refuses to take herself. She supplies the weapons, whispers the right information, and watches to see who bleeds. The wolves are useful to her because they give her another way to test us without exposing her own position."

His gaze moved from Klaus to Elijah.

"If we crush the pack, she learns how we respond to a direct threat. If we chase every lead she leaves behind, she learns how easily she can control our attention. I want to know what she values enough to put her people in danger for it."

Malia turned from the window. "She may already have decided what she wants us to find. The pack could be carrying something important, or it could be bait designed to make us chase them while she moves something else."

"Then we will follow the trail and see where it leads," Viktor replied. "If it is bait, we'll discover the hook. If it isn't, we'll take whatever they're carrying."

He looked toward Damon, Katherine, and Stefan.

"Bring me the artifact if you find it. Bring me the people who know where it came from. Everyone else is expendable."

Nobody mistook the statement for a threat. Viktor had not raised his voice, and he had no need to. His decision had already been made.

The three hybrids left the study to prepare for the hunt. Freya gathered her notes, determined to examine the rings before the day was over. Elijah returned to the map, while Klaus remained beside the fireplace, visibly displeased at being kept away from the action.

Viktor watched the eastern sky through the tall windows. Somewhere beyond the city, Francesca Guerrera was leading her pack toward a prize she believed would secure their future.

He intended to let her get close enough to reveal who had promised it to her.

Then he would decide how much of Seraphine's carefully constructed world deserved to survive the morning.
